Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
Awesomeness
New and yet fully invested in Trek. Exciting and yet keeps with the times with politics and science.
For the first time we get the origin story of a classic Trek Captain before they were ever a captain and it is epic.
The mother of all the new Trek shows that followed or spun off.
The first 2 seasons are some of the best Trek to come to screen. Michelle Yeoh was such a sweet sweet surprise. These seasons also provide a perfect springboard for the last 3 seasons "location" change.
The last season has a few issues due to the fact that the show was canceled with only a few episodes to wrap up storylines, but they did a decent job finishing.
Will Trent (2023)
Awesomeness
Great show. Most of the actors look nothing like the characters from the books, but their performances make this irrelevant. The chemistry is near-perfect and there are moments that happen that aren't in the books that add to the overall legend that are the Karin Slaughter world.
Sonja Sohn stands out for me. Her performance is like she jumped straight from the pages of the books.
Ramon Rodriguez is far shorter than Will is in the book but like Tom Cruise in the first Jack Reacher movie, he brings the character to life.
This is live action fan fiction, like all books to film, and it's worth the watch.
Definitely recommend the show, but I highly recommend Karin's books. Start with the Grant County series, then the Will Trent and then devour her standalone novels.
There's a reason she's in my top 5 author list.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
It started good...
The first half was awesome. While reminiscent of the heart and humor of the first movie, it was its own movie. I enjoyed the casting and the sets, and the story was progressing nicely.
But the second half dived into a swimming pool of fan fluffing, using the same villain and dog monsters as was used previously. And as much as I enjoyed the 3 special appearances at the end, it seemed so unbelievable (even for a movie with ghosts and sci-fi technology) that it removed the enjoyment I was having in the first hour.
The 2 after credit scenes were very enjoyable, though.
Glad I finally watched it. Unlike the 1st, I won't be watching it again.
