Amazing, tragic, comic
21 October 2011
Well, seems like I saw this movie about 20 years ago, and I still can call up the images in my head. I thought this was a great movie about a insignificant guy taking on an enemy he has no chance of defeating, just like you can not defeat water. The film is very intense, moving and has a lot of inventive storytelling going on. The mood is a strange blend of comic and tragic, a bit like some SOPRANOS episodes. You should know, though that 90ties Russian Cinema had pretty fatal world view and wasn't very good at happy endings. After STRANA GLUKHIKH LOKH, Pobeditel wody is definitely my favorite Russian movie. On the odd chance that you get the chance, see it. It's a very straightforward, powerful movie.
