Heartbreaking and beautiful
28 May 2023
I can hand on heart say this is one of the best films I've seen. It is beautiful and haunting in the same breath. There are scenes that are so heartbreakingly hard to watch and you still can't look away. The cinematography is a masterpiece, the script entirely simple yet so realistic. The use of little known actors for the major roles is a testament to their ability, because they stand head and shoulder above the likes of the Hollywood names. None of us will ever know the hell our soldiers went through during WWI, but this feels like a glimpse of the life they led for those four years and it really makes you stop and just think that these boys and young men left their entire worlds behind to fight in these conditions, I'd imagine that was Sam Mendes' goal. The set is incredible and the use of the single shot technique is so well used. I finished watching it 15 minutes ago and I would watch it again right this second.

Amazing film.

Irritating and over the top

My daughter loves it, but she likes anything bright and colourful. The storylines are okay but the voices... they're just awful! Why does British children's tv have these awful strained fake voices for their characters?! Incredibly irritating and unpleasant to watch. Thomas as a character is just not likeable, and the added characters are OTT. There are also lots more countries in the world other than India and Brazil, maybe Thomas could explore Europe more seeing as it's a British classic? Maybe even explore some of England? That being said the songs are insanely catchy and you end up singing them all day.
