Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Strange New Worlds (2022)
Very well written and performed!
In the few episodes Jeffrey Hunt slipt into the role of captain Pike my expectations grew higher and higher when I learned this spin-off would actually happen I feared I could only get disappointed..
NOT SO!
This first episode was very well written and superbly performed! Jeffrey Hunt fit into the role of captain Pike as if he was born for the part. The story was told giving great depth to the characters without overdoing it. Giving some extra info for long term Trek fans without alienating new viewers to the franchise.
And on a personal note, we all know (or should know) we're going to die at some point, the way this element was handled in this episode made me give the 10/10.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: Keep Going (2017)
Often episodes with a lot of "flash backs" are crummy, not this one!
There are some (small) revelations in there, but mostly it's about friendship. And the last few seconds of the episode brought a tear to my eye..
All in all a very well balanced episode definitely worth watching!
Upgrade (2018)
Nice movie, but the ending cost 2 maybe three points
The premise needs a bit getting used to, but the script and the acting is great, which makes it all believable. Hence the solid 6 points to start with.
The two sudden plot twists at the conclusion of the movie felt rushed. That could have been done better and left me unsatisfied. Hence the missing extra points. A shame wished I could have given more.
Star Trek: Picard (2020)
You really need to give this one a chance (for seven seasons :P)
Just think, of all the Star Trek series you may have seen.. which one intrigued you from the start and made you immediately long for the next episode?
OK, I'll confess, I'm a fan of the TNG series, liked VOY, accepted DS9 (B5 wins though ;) ) and Discovery is growing on me (like Enterprise did, but was cut short) and honestly TOS is a bit to nostalgic for my taste.
A few small things left aside this story is true to TNG canon, as it should. I mean hey, it's Picard! I can't see this episode without remembering the multiple times I have seen all those TNG episodes, but I think even if you have never seen anything from Star Trek you can appreciate this (but you'll need to get used to the whole ST world then though ;) ).
I for one am a happy camper an love it that one can anticipate for a week to see the next part of this chapter in mr. Picard's life!
Stargate Universe (2009)
The second series I found that deserves a third season (and a forth..)
Just think, this series started almost ten years ago (writing this in 2018). Now it's more comon to show the somewhat darker sides of humanity... In that day I think it was almost revolutionary! So, yes, if you loved SG /SGA this will take some getting used to.. but it's not "to dark", it's just right. Just the right balance to be absolutely intriguing! Makes me think of the series "Serenity" that one also deserved so much more...
I rarely give a ten star score, this series deserves it!
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
I left with a bad feeling..
Part IV, V and VI all gave my the feeling, "It'll be OK". It was about Hope and the Return of the Jedi. Even The Empire strikes back ends with a sense of that "It'll be OK".
A feeling befitting a Disney movie.. Me, a fan of Sci-Fi, a fan of Disney.. I thought it was a match made in heaven when the saga became the property of Disney..
But no, I feared it.. but I had to be sure and had to see it for myself and got absolutely flabbergasted, dismayed even and left the theater with a bad feeling:
Part VII The Force Awakens was the bridge towards VIII. That one had a bit of both.
It was the bridge towards this grim approach for the future of the Star Wars universe.
I mean, the first trilogy and in a different (personally less successful) way also the prequel trilogy had the telling of an epic Saga only bested in theaters with the likes of Lord of the Rings.
The role of the "penguin like birds" was a poor attempt for a comic relief which seems to be an attempt for a standard in current day films for it to be succesful. Sure you can have humor, but the way it was done was flat wrong and unfitting the Star Wars Saga.
The returning actors from the original trilogy are all but cameo's and the actions of Luke are so extremely way off base I don't even know where to start. I mean, with all that he did in the first trilogy he tried to kill Ben Solo in his sleep? And then he runs towards the deepest hole he can find, letting the person he tried to kill because he was so dangerous that it merited putting aside all norms and virtues go rampant and destroy everything he defended, fought for and held dear?
I mean come on, how to destroy a legacy!
And why let spirit Yoda be able to cast lightning and literally destroy Jedi history?
And a good part of the movie is about the last of the Rebel fleet being able to run OR jump to an other location.. and after the fleeing evacuation transports get blasted into nothingness the main Rebel ship is suddenly able to jump to light speed and obliterate that stupendously large mother ship?
Just those two "new facts" alone would have ushered a completely different unfolding of events! The "ghost jedi" could have literally fought beyond the grave!? And large up to stupendously large space ships could be easily destroyed with an old spaceship going to light speed through it?
And why is Poe so adamant about destroying one dreadnought when they are met with no less then six, SIX Star Destroyers AND that stupendously large ship of Snoke?
It is clear to me that this film wanted to make more then just a little clear that all that was accomplished in the first trilogy was in vain and had to be utterly destroyed in this movie. Not just the accomplishments, but also any moral high ground the returning cameos could have had, had to get utterly destroyed or at least discredited.
Resulting in a dark movie where the arms trader is ridiculously rich and gets away with it all and the sorrow for the demoralizing losses of the Rebellion is smacked against the screen and the last few rebels are left for dead by those few remaining other rebels who refuse to save the last symbol of the rebellion (Leia).
That same rebellion that wanted desperately to find that other symbol: Luke. And what became a race with Snoke, because he also knows the power of a symbol...
But no, wait, Rey has had the teachings of Luke in the form of three lessons of three sentences! And now she will be the saviour of the galaxy!
I have seen the first trilogy several times. I've binge watched them in the time of the VCR.. The prequel trilogy was OK, not that great, but OK.. but this movie..
No, it was a disgrace, I wish it was never made.
PS: Yes I did give it two stars instead one. Because the special effects were great... Money can buy great effects, but apparently it can not buy a great new chapter in the Saga called Star Wars
