Fallout (2024)
Lucy is GREAT
So, I'm only peripherally familiar with Fallout as my husband and son played the game, so I had no expectations going into the watching of this series. I was so pleasantly surprised to find the character Lucy is no Mary Sue and in my opinion is the best written female character in an action series I've seen in quite a while. The series is easy to follow even for the uninitiated (such as myself), it looks great, the casting is perfect, it has an intriguing mystery at its core, and the pilot grabbed my attention upon hitting the "play" button. There seems to be much debate about the timeline, etc. From dedicated fans but I recommend it regardless (I do not believe in toxic fandom so I respect dissenting opinions in this regard). We as an audience have been fed subpar content for far too long and I believe this series is worthy of a watch. Amazon actually and surprisingly got it right with this series and praise is due for that. Check it out.
Reptile (2023)
Solid
This movie was surprisingly entertaining. It features a solid cast turning in solid performances. I was pleased to see Alicia Silverstone & Del Toro reunite, and they proved to have enough chemistry to form a believable and formidable couple. Timberlake was decent and not at all cringeworthy. The script is really good, which is a feat in this genre these days (we've kinda seen it all by now). I thought it was going to be more predictable but I was wrong; the twists truly had me intrigued. Some of my suspicions were correct but not always exact. The ending leaves a bit to be desired, but all in all this movie was worth 2 hours of my time. I enjoyed it enough to leave a brief review, and that says a lot.
Barbie (2023)
Just meh.
So, the Barbie movie was "meh"
There's been a ton of hype about the film's political bent and honestly, yes... the patriarchal nonsense is a bit heavy handed but that's not even what made it so bad.
It was just dumb.
It was too long and nonsensical and I really don't know how to sum it up other than that.
I laughed a couple of times and one or two parts almost resonated with me, but then it just went from relatable to preachy and I just eyerolled so hard.
It was mostly just boring and dumb, and that's disappointing because it looked great, the cast was great, and it had such potential to be a great self-aware meta comedy. It just failed so hard at doing that.
My summary: Barbie gains sentience, fights the patriarchy, becomes a real girl, and goes to the gynecologist.
This movie will NOT appeal to young kids.
I can almost guarantee they'll find it boring.
It's not a typical kids movie riddled with double entendres and over-their-heads adult humor. It's just adult humor and it's not even particularly funny (just my opinion).
It absolutely looks amazing, it looks like it was made with kids in mind, it looks like a nostalgia trip for moms, and it looks like family fun.
However... with the exception of looking amazing, it accomplishes none of that. (The Mario Movie did all of those things sooo much better in my opinion. THAT movie was darn near perfect.)
If you wanna see Barbie, go for it. But if you're considering taking little kids I would not personally recommend it. 😘
