Breaking Bad (2008)
'An Amazing journey of a man controlled by ego and greed
I watched this series a long time ago and recently had a pleasure of revisiting the show again. I want to say that it actually still amazed me how great this season actually is if not more delightful to watch again. The story is so well written and circles around so many metaphors and foreshadowing which always keeps you on the edge. The gritty and very realistic setting makes it one of the best entertainment out there. The writing and characters have so much depth and so much to offer that everything falls into place perfectly. The duo of Bryan and Paul is something unmatched. The cinematography and small continuity details/easter eggs from Vince Gilligan are something I will always miss in other shows. All in all, if you're interested to watch anything this summer, this is the perfect time to give it a watch or better yet a rewatch!
.
Pros:
- Amazing cinematography and writing.
- Great use of metaphors and foreshadowing.
- Small details that play a huge role.
Cons:
- A little sluggish pacing of the story in ending seasons that can take a boring route for some.
Bullet Train (2022)
A Great Ride full of great sequences and editing!
Bullet Train
Review
Coming from the amazing direction of David Leitch, Bullet Train blows you away with its crazy action sequences filled with a lot of well-edited shots. The story has multiple points of view of people (and a water bottle!) & just gives a very fresh preview of what entertainment is all about. A fresh script and an A-list cast with their amazing portrayal of all characters. The movie keeps you guessing on what will happen next with its somewhat whacky style of incidents and twists. Brad Pitt is seen as a completely different character which is refreshing to see. All in all, if this is what the future of Cinema holds, we are in for a treat with Fall Guy and Deadpool & Wolverine giving us similar experiences.
.
Pros:
- Amazing Cinematography and Choreography
- Very well-written sequences and editing.
- Great twists.
Cons:
- A teensy bit of overplayed metaphors which actually sums up story.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
An amazing journey with Gritty setting.
Puss in Boots returns for a sequel with the hugest bang possible. With a whole new animation design that resembles closely to Spiderverse & TMNT, the last wish made every fan rejoiced with it's sense of humour and amazing choreography matching to none. The film succeeded in doing something what Dreamworks is known for, targeting at mature audiences. With topics as death, depression, etc, it really is a dreamworks writing through and through. The film's major bonus point is the addition of most beloved fairy tale characters and showing their darker and gritty sides which really puts a new perspective in the minds of people who have grown up watching such titles. The story explores the last life of Puss which really puts a spin on what it means to live a life knowing there is no coming back.
All in all, a great film that made me love Dreamworks even more & hopeful in the future installments.
PROS:
- Amazing Cinematography and Animation.
- Great Villain and characters arc.
- A complete and unique story.
CONS:
- Some story points that feels to repetitive of the first movie but still blends in really well.
Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024)
A Fun Ride with a Kiddy and above-average plot
After a few years, the Dragon Warrior returns to big screens with all the usual fun and messing around as in previous instalments. The film again doesn't have to do much to entertain the fans of the Kung Fu Panda franchise and DreamWorks studios. The animation has been upgraded super well, the action sequences are choreographed well, and the magic of Jack Black shines bright as ever. The only thing that left me hanging once again as did the 3rd installment was the lack of much adult and dark storyline which I loved DreamWorks for. The plot feels very kid-friendly and although it's not a bad thing, it leaves you wanting more. The ending was decided in the first 10 minutes and the rest feels like a filler of what could have been an amazing journey in the life of the dragon warrior. Although the lack of Furious Five wasn't a big downgrade, I really wish to see the seriousness of Kung Fu Panda 2 in the future although it's very unlikely.
PROS:
- Great choreographed action sequences.
- Amazing environment design.
- Somewhat mature Character Development which I liked.
CONS:
- Very Kiddy story which I shouldn't complain much.
- Kinda spoiled ending in first 10 minutes.
- No Furious Five.
Sapne Vs Everyone (2023)
A must Watch for everyone atleast once!
Coming from the ever creative and growing TVF, comes a series I didn't know I needed in my life. From the first second, I was hooked on it until I finished it off in a single binge-watch. Even with its mostly B-list cast and somewhat above-average acting from the extras, what shines bright is the ideology and the absolute gem of writing. The story mainly discusses the struggles of a middle-class artist trying to make his way into his passion with all the hardships life throws at him. The show provides a very opposite and much more vandal view from a supporting character. The biggest plus to take away from the whole season is the most amazing writing and cinematography that is unmatched in any YouTube series you will watch especially from India. In the end, this is something that everyone can relate to it goes deeper than just the superficial and typical metaphors and symbolism.
.
PROS:
- Great Cinematography and Story.
- Amazing writing and characters.
- Great use of Metaphors.
CONS:
- Somewhat above average acting from supporting cast.
Taxi Driver (1976)
A SCORSESE DE NIRO CLASSIC LOST IN COMPLEX METAPHORS
The classic film which, weirdly enough, I hadn't watched before but was always intended to experience the start of Martin Scorsese's & Robert De Niro's careers. The movie mainly revolves around a taxi driver, as if we experience the whole 2 hours through his eyes. The nightlife of New York in the early 2000s, the locals of the city, and funnily enough the ongoing elections that have everyone rounded up. The film explores the themes of classic rivalries as with the taxi driver (lower class) vs. The running president, Coca Cola vs. Pepsi, the sophisticated vs. The slums of NYC are some of the themes that make the audience really connect with the director's vision. Although the story is mainly a monologue of the main lead, the story is somewhat interesting and seems to lead somewhere. The whole movie for me was pretty engaging until the 2nd act where it does get a bit boring and doesn't seem to end. Even with the standard of early 2000s, the film seems to be held by the brilliant acting of De Niro who we are being molded into a character denied by everyone. It is a very good commentary on Society and how we look at things differently depending what emotions we decide to overcome us. All in all, pretty good movie which might seem boring at parts but a classic nonetheless.
The Railway Men: The Untold Story of Bhopal 1984 (2023)
A horrible incident told beautifully.
Going into this series, I was excited to watch a short drama/thriller about a real incident that impacted the people of Bhopal, India in 1984. I have to say it surpassed my expectations by a long mile. I couldn't have expected a better visual representation of the story being told with such amazing writing and terrifying imagery that didn't hold back at all. The storyline, symbolic use of cinematography and just amazing play from the cast made it the complete series. At parts, it connects with the audience as the incident that happened rather than a series being shot and displayed for entertainment
It was a complete story being told honestly and I wouldn't have it any other way.
All in all, a horrible incident told beautifully.
PROS:
- Great use of cinematography and Colours.
- Symbolism & terrifying imagery are displayed amazingly.
- Great cast.
CONS:
- Somewhat overdramatic parts which could hinder the story rather than amplify it.
12th Fail (2023)
A RARE GEM FROM BOLLYWOOD WHICH IS A MUST WATCH!
Going into this movie with a lot of recommendations, I had high hopes and I have to say it exceeded my expectations. From the very first shot till the end, I was invested in the movie emotionally and mentally without realizing the longevity of the film's length. Talking about the plot, the story delves into very local and domestic areas which are often not highlighted. A story of success, motivation & not accepting failure is enough to motivate anyone to stand up and pursue what he dreams of. Even though there is a lot of inspiration from the classic gold "3 Idiots", this film takes a much more realistic take on the struggle of a student showing how it is to compete against the very privileged. It is something that brought tears to my eyes on multiple occasions which I can't say about a lot of movies. This movie makes me hopeful of the future of the Indian film industry knowing it will be in safe hands. The framing & shots remind me a lot of Khoosat's cinematography which best showcases the local point of view of a person from the lower class.
.
PROS:
- Emotional and realistic plot. - Very localized & simple framing. - Great single shots & acting.
CONS:
- Few very basic & somewhat okay shots which you get the hang of going into the film.
Farzi (2023)
A Unique Show that displays a deeper Issue
FARZI
SHOW REVIEW
Coming from the ever-evolving Bollywood/Amazon Prime industry is another brilliant show that tackles the issue of counterfeiting. The story takes the audience to a much more domestic and local look into the life of an artist struggling to survive in the ever-evolving world. As he sees that the counterfeit art is much more valued than the original, this gives way to a much bigger plan, a satire on its own. The plot is ever dramatic & doesn't leave the viewer looking for more. The cast is stellar with some Tamil industry faces, which is refreshing to see. Talking about the Technical side, which I can't help but see, the cinematography and colors are amazing changes of pace from what we expect of Bollywood. The highlight for me was the intro sequence which blows my mind every time as it must have taken a lot of brain power and animation time to get to where it stands. Although the show is a great entertainer, it still seems to have its potential unlocked with hopefully upcoming seasons as the pilot season did leave us on a cliffhanger ending!
PROS:
- Unique Story. - Amazing Cinematography & Framing. - Hypocrisy of Society/Metaphors
- Laggy sequences at parts. - Some sluggish acting parts. - Somewhat repetitive bollywood sequences.
RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
A Rare Masterpiece from Tamil industry
With a long and enjoyable duration of +3 hours, RRR by the all-famous S. S. Rajamouli is a masterpiece from the ever-growing Tamil/Bollywood industry. Talking about the plot, it takes you back to the era of British rule in the Sub-continent and all the oppression that occurred. Although the story is rich and just keeps you on edge, what surprised me the most was the use of Symbolism and VFX quality, and of course the crazy Naatu Naatu sequence. The use of Fire and water as the ever-going rivals in the history of mankind and how each person is represented as an idea rather than just a face on the screen is just unbelievably good. Talking about the technical side, the highlights were the beautiful environments, castles, all the wildlife and their movement, plus the cinematography and slow-mo shots (which did remind me of Zack Snyder a lot!). How all the dots connect in the end provides for a very satisfying conclusion which is suppose to be a tribute to all the freedom fighters of the sub-continent.
Pros:
- Rich Story.
- Amazing Cinematography & VFX.
- Amazing use of Symbolism & Metaphors
Cons:
- Somewhat use of cliché Tamil movie sequences which are not that bad.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (2023)
A Short & Sweet story told well
From the Book of Roald Dahl, brought to life by Wes Anderson, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a wonderful and interesting story that questions the capabilities & limits of the Human mind and dedication. The plot is short yet refreshing and the typical style of Wes Anderson is perfect for a movie of this stature. The writing is acted out as if you are still reading the words of the page and is something not seen much from Top tier movies. The biggest highlight for me was the set design and how it changed from one to another seamlessly without the use of CGI. Most of the things are practical as in every Anderson movie and the frames capture your eyes till the movie ends. The stellar cast was led by Ben Kingsley, Benedict Cumberbatch and co. Just makes the story so much better. It is a must-watch for every Roald Dahl fan as well as Cinematographers and Designers alike.
Loki (2021)
A Literal Marvel of a TV Show!
After the long wait for the beloved villain's return, Marvel is finally back with season 2 of LOKI. Although the season starts with the usual build-up as all the MCU shows, the big twist in Episode 4 and the finale left me rethinking the whole approach of Kevin Feige & co. The dynamic duo of Tom & Owen Wilson were as always the highlight with a lot of credit to Ke Huy Quan for making his MCU debut. The cinematography & VFX work is unique to past MCU projects. The show takes a new step into the genre of Sci-Fi and Superheroes & leaves me wondering if Marvel is going to stick to this new take rather than following the cliché superhero formula. All in all, really excited for upcoming Phases as this show is setting up something extraordinary and never seen before cinema experience. This show is not only the peak of Marvel but also a masterpiece in the world of TV shows.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)
An Animation Excellence made complete by Seth Rogen & Team
After the action-packed live-action rendition of TMNT a few years back, we finally get a new revamped animated version of the underground vigilantes who are much more expressive than ever. Seth Rogen and the cast did an amazing job portraying all the roles, especially Ice Cube who embodied the villain. The story was more than great with the amazing comedic touch of Seth Rogen. The movie is filled with a lot of easter eggs which just keep on giving. The plot felt like something the fanbase deserved since the animated series but keeping it so unique to entice the newcomers. For the technical Animation side, it is evolutionary following the success of the Spider verse comic-based style. The art style is grungy yet gorgeous to look at and every frame is to be admired. All in all, a great movie that sets up an amazing universe while keeping it fresh.
P. S. Keep a look out for the 3rd act as it keeps on giving!
Nightcrawler (2014)
A thrill ride left unsatisfied
Been meaning to watch this movie after I heard it symbolizes the idea of Toxic Masculinity so well. After watching it though, it was more of Jake Gyllenhaal's spectacular performance than the plot which made the movie stick. The story presented the personality of someone who would go to any stretch in pursuit of his goals or tasks. Although the story conclusion was kind of a miss unlike Fight Club, the whole movie gives off this creepy & horrifying look into the media & how the NEWS sometimes go too far without the hurdle of human emotions or moral code. The motivation & almost robotic actions of the protagonist shows how far a human can go if the societal codes & restrictions are lifted. The story even though continued, still ends up as being great contenders with Fight Club, Driver & more.
The Menu (2022)
Fun & Thrill watch
The movie is a Unique & Fresh take on the genre of Thriller & Drama with a hint of comedic genius & Post-Modern symbolism. The A-list cast and writers team up and provide the audience with a journey which is genuinely exciting & keeps you guessing on what's going to happen next. The amazing performances from Anya Taylor, Ralph Fiennes & Nicholas Hoult shone through. The plot is simple yet deep & let's the audience follow along. The story unravels quickly & the unnerving secrets in the meanings of Dishes always makes you guessing their true meaning in real life. It is a journey to watch it through and the conclusion is brutal yet satisfying.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Once in a decade Masterpiece!
As was expected with Christopher Nolan's brilliance, Oppenheimer will blast away all your critiques & emotions with the perfect blend of Drama, Storytelling, Politics, Government consiracies & more. The first act went away in a fast-paced manner which is very Nolan. While the second act builds up, the actual blast sequence is so well shot and edited that you can't help but shake in anticipation as if you are part of the first few to ever experience the Historic moment for the first time ever. The amazing story doesn't end there as you still have 90 minutes of Political & Social goodness where we dive deeper into the rabbit hole. The third is actually so terrifically satisfying as all is revealed & I was reminded of all previous Nolan movies. Everything from A-list Cast, Writing, Story, Direction, Visuals & ofcourse the amazing scores of Ludwig Goransson mix up to give out a gorgeous display of a story that keeps on unfolding. In the end, would watch this atleast 2-3 more times to admire the film even more!
Zindagi Tamasha (2019)
Another Masterpiece that Pakistan Cinema missed!
With another powerful story by the one & only Sarmad Khoosat, we see another Film based on the Exploitation of the Religion in the country and how it effects the norm. The characters were made alive by Arif Hassan & the all famous Samiya Mumtaz. With the release we see the same political problems we have always dealt with before. Before watching this, I had only seen clips of the movie but the whole watch on YouTube just made me appreciate the craft even more. The powerful & intense moments reallt hit the heart and mind in moments unnoticed. We see the typical Khoosat style in this film with long shots & realistic settings. Although the movie conveys a clear message of exploitation and effects of society on a person, I can't help but feel this is just a hint of something more complete yet to come. But talking about the Technical aspect which my analytical brain couldn't help but see, the edits especially the SFX seemed a bit choppy & repetitive considering this was being made for Cienema release. All in all, would have loved to watch it on the biggest possible sceen but the art still lives on. More power to you Sarmad Khoosat!
Jujutsu Kaisen (2020)
Crazy Good Anime!
I want to start by saying I don't usually watch much Anime other than Demon Slayer, etc. But through a couple of recommendations I decided to give it a try & boy I am happy that I did. The show follows the same formula that made Naruto & Demon Slayer successful while still keeping it's storyline original & unique. The lore is interesting from the start and the series doesn't waste time & jumps straight into it. The pacing is perfectly balanced with the lore and action sequences which is a big factor for me when it comes to other Anime. The show doesn't waste 10 epsiodes for a single fight which I am glad. The characters all have rich backstories & are so well written that one cannot help but admire the style and uniqueness of every character. Although the most Anime fans won't find much difference in the original formula but for a newbie viewer like me, this series deserves all the praise it's getting. The ending was very unepectedly satisfying. All in all, the lore & animation style is what I loved the most.
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (2019)
High budget YouTube/SNL sketches filled with Random Comedy!
Written by the famously known comedian Tim Robinson & Produced by all known comedy group The Lonely Island, the show has random funny skits which are mostly entertaining because of the expressive acting of Tim Robinson. Although the show is most well put as bunch of YouTube/SNL Skits being directed by a high budget crew, it does have it's moments which are honestly really enjoyable & work well as their own stories pretty well. Taking the random moments of daily life and finding comedy in them is the skill well shown here. Even with Tim Robinson's comedic writing, the show fails to have many memorable moments & is easily forgettable after single watch. All in all, if you are a fan of Random comedy like me & are searching for something unique to pass time, this is good recommendation.
Dune (2021)
Simple story made Grand!
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is already known for great films like Blade Runner 2049 & Arrival, this Cinematic peice is a fine addition to the portfolio. It's rarely that you find something so captivating and mesmerising in a story with amazing visuals which feel very real yet with a lore so deep that doesn't baffle a newbie watching for the first time. The film is full of A list actors who do an outstanding job portraying the characters. The story is rich & fullfilling yet easy enough to follow. I feel like the credit goes to the Directors for bringing a classic into modern cinema of Superheroes & Action movies without failing to lose Audience's attention. Timothee Chalamet shone brightly which was very unexpected for a film of this scale & A young actor like him. All in all, I couldn't wait to see what happened next every minute of the movie and couldn't be happier as they work their way to the sequel!
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 (2012)
Great Conclusion not held back back by anything!
The movie initially gives off a very Gritty and Comic accurate Gotham city vibe after disappearance of Dark vigilante for over 10 years. The passage of time has not been very kind to all the beloved DC character which really add to the dark feel of the film. Although animted, the film dipicts very well written dialogues, slow but well animated action sequences to add to grime look, & an old Bruce Wayne who is seen pushing himself to the fullest in order to bring back peace in the all lost city of Gotham. Even though the first part is slow paced and gives audience a chance to absorb the new look as never seen before, The second part ups the ante by brining the beloved Joker and Superman. All the Political instability and war on the rise, both the films sums ups what would happen if the heroes fall yet giving us a glimpse of hope into what DC has to offer if they are not limited by the range of producers and writers. The ultimate fight between Man of Steel & Batman was somehting I will remeber & reminds alot of Zack Snyder's version.
Secret Invasion (2023)
Great Potential failed to Conclude
With the long awaited return of Nick Fury back on Earth after the events of Far From Home, the season starts off with a bang with story building upto to something really great. Starring away from the usual Comic source material, the series ventures it's way into the modern era with The exploration of the Skrull community & the events happened between the big gap of Captain Marvel and Endgame. The first R-rated show from Marvel doesn't fail to shoecase the intense action sequences which have their mements. Although the conclusion might not be as satisfactory as one would hope, Marvel still doesn't fail to represent one of it's better shows in last 2 years with cool storyline, well choreographed action sequences & intense moments that would make the Marvel Universe more impactful in the future. Although as a Fan I would've loved more punch from the series, it still is one of the top 5 shows Marvel Studios has blessed us with, which says alot about where the studio is headed.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Another Fine Addition to the Series!
With another addition in the Mission Impossible Series, the Rogue Ethan Hunt is back with his gang to fight the greatest evil yet. Even though there are already many movies speculating on the dangers of Artificial Intelligence, Dead Reckoning mixes it up with the usual touch of intense action sequences & somewhat unique and newer storyline. All the acts of Movie screams Mission Impossible & Tom Cruise with Hayley Atwell's quirky acting Tom Cruise's once again heart throbbing stunts. Although the famous Cliff Jump Sequence is not as impactful as it was hyped up to be, it is mostly because of other much more intense sequences especially in the closing act which is something I assure nobody has seen before in Cinemas. It is a Mission Impossible movie through and through & would expect nothing less. The only setback is the opening act Dialogues which feels lazy and cliche, as if they might have been written by Ai itself, which would be very on plot if true. But the movie picks up very quickly to more entertaining and fun parts.
The Flash (2023)
Good Comic Book Movie failed by Bad Studio
Releasing after such great hype, The Flash failed to generate any sort of fan love from it's Cinema audience. Even though I had very low expectations from the movie, after a couple of recommendations I decided to give it a watch & Thank God I did cause it has so much to offer then people expected. The Complains of VFX being goofy & weird is true for some parts of the movie but for most part it's still comes off nicely done. The plot deters from the comics a little which was a fun surprise. The first act was kind of goofy but nothing you might hate. Ben Affleck, Micheal Keaton & Sasha Calle outshone Ezra in the movie in all the right ways. The second & third act of the movie were so unexpected that I actually had to rewind some of the parts and analyse frame by frame. The conclusion was very satisfying with a cool cameo to end the film and with it the DCEU. Although the film recieved criticism & hate mainly due to Ezra's real life issues, I still think it is one of the better movies we have seen from DC & may very well be on the levels of No Way Home & Multiverse of Madness if it wasn't for some sloppy parts & Ezra Miller'S weird if not goofy acting. A great watch as a Superhero Genere fan & would recommend watching it yourself before listening to all the comments.
