This World: Gypsy Child Thieves (2009)
Sad depiction of the Roma culture
I thought this film was horribly biased and racist against the Gypsies. It's presumption is that a few bad apple equal a rotten tree. There is absolutely no mention of the racism that the Gypsy peoples face throughout the world that forces them to struggle on a day to day basis. This film puts all the blame on the Gypsies and the Romanian people! The movie also neglects the impact of poverty on crime in other cultures. It was quick to judge the Gypsies on crimes but made no comparison to other crime rate statistics based on age, race, or even location. It simply made Gypsies out to be the only people who steal. Lastly it condemned the Roma for their exploitation of children, "forcing the children to go out and steal for them", without considering how much cultures all over the world exploit their children by forcing them into acting, singing, modeling, or in some cultures, working in industries and sweatshops. I absolutely recommend skipping this film, and I believe the filmmakers should be ashamed of themselves.
Behind the Wall of Sleep (2006)
Behind the wall of H. P. Lovecraft...
Behind the wall of sleep is based on a H.P. Lovecraft story, and though I haven't read a lot of Lovecraft I have seen a lot of movies based on his work. This little gem is certainly a must see for Lovecraft lovers. Not so much for it's closeness to the story, which I can't comment on, but for the simple quality of film.
Behind is about a psychiatrist in a low rent asylum who takes on an inbred patient who killed his family. Problems ultimately arise when the psychiatrist becomes obsessed with the patient believing that a deformity on the patients back is a deity who longs for freedom, and brains.
Though the acting is at times hard to watch, it is almost fitting in the melodramatic and Gothic settings. The cinematography is hectic and "artschool", but again works well with the story.
Don't get me wrong. This movie ain't perfect, but compared to many of the Lovecraft movies this is one of the more enjoyable. It won't kill you to watch it once so I say give it a try. But don't say I didn't warn you.
Hulk (2003)
Genius
Ang Lee may be the greatest director on the face of the planet. This movie was perfect. And I don't mean that lightly. From its score to directing this movie had it going on. Being both a fan of the comic book and the TV series I can say this did justice for them both. As for the Hulk him self. I don't get where people are saying he looks to cartoonie. In my opinion he looked just like he does in ninety percent of the comic books. CGI was the best it's ever been and better than that in the Matrix movies. This was one of the most visually stunning movies I have ever seen. And I've seen a lot. I gave this movie a 10, and I don't care who knows it.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Woe...as in woe is me
Ok so of course no movie hyped up like Matrix reloded was could actually live up to that hype... but this was disappointing. Mainly the dialogue dragged, even for an action sci-fi. But also they went over board on the fight scenes were too long. I shouldn't feel bored half way through an action sequence. The story was good and I loved the plot twists in this one. I just think there is a better way to tell it than they did. And for spending half of the budget on an entire car chase scene, they didn't pull it off very well. I just wasn't excited very much. The fight choriagrophy was amazing but often ruined by the computer generated charicters. I think that, even though the directors wouldn't have been able to have done as much, rope work and real actors would have still been great and it wouldn't have looked so fake. Over all I was bored by The Matrix: Reloaded and left wondering how they can salvage my love for the first one in the third one. By the way, what was up with that rave seen in the caves. Did that serve some purpose to advance the plot of the movie? 5/10
Daredevil (2003)
A disgrace to movies and comics alike. (Spoilers)
Ok, so I felt that this was the worst movie of the year and the whole time watching it I was thinking to my self...How could this be any better than the Roger Corman's F4 movie. This movie had the worst dialogue I have ever heard in a movie. And that's including some of the movies I questioned even having scripts. No doubt, Ben Aflec (Who was very unconvincing as Daredevil) ad-libbed 90% of his part, which camed out as a smug, smart-allec loser. The only good charicter was Bullsey, but the poor directing took alot of his blood lust and made it lack any impact when he killed somebody. And as for those who say this was a good adaption. The only scene well adapted was the Elektra death scene. The rest was crap. For one Daredevil never believes in the justice system. He wouldn't go around killing people to exalt revenge. That's what the Punishers job was. And how about that Bullseye "Death scene." Must we forget that Bullseye has a skeleton of Adamantium. That fall wouldn't have fased him. And my favorite, what about everyone just figuring out Daredevil's Identity. No body took off his mask, one of Matt Murdock's girlfriend figured out his secret alterego and sold his Identity to the kingpin. This movie was horrible and a disgrace to all comic movies have been working towards.
They (2002)
As a true horror fan...
As a true horror fan I find it sad and surprising more people don't like this movie. The director did an excelent job of capturing the fear involved in night terror's and the cast had me believing every second of the movie. So what if it wasn't as frightening as it was just a good story. By the end of the movie the only disappointment I had was I had to sit behind loud disrespectful rednecks in the theater. This one ranks up there on my list and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good horror movie.
Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
Am I supposed to find this funny!
Let me tell you people something. MTV has ruined the movie industry for every one. There used to be a time we could respectfully go see a spoof flik and laugh our butts off. Not any more! I remember loving movies by Mel Brooks, and other great spoofs like Airplane. Now they shove this disgusting trash down our throats and expect us to swallow it. This movie was horrible. Every second of it was sick and completely over the top with toilet humor that couldn't have made me laugh even if the writers of South Park wrote it. And the director knew it wasn't funny. Other wise he wouldn't have edited in all those shouts in the background in a last ditch effort to redeem a hopeless movie. Usually, I love stupid movies to laugh at and enjoy in there campiness, but this movie is just stupid and degrading to humanity.
Lilo & Stitch (2002)
Touches the heart
I am an orphan like Lilo, and like stitch. I have seen Lilo and Stich twice and could watch it hundreds of more times. Because it like no other movie before has connected to my heart and captured the true hurt of feeling alone in the world. It also gives inspiration to all those who have felt that hurt and proved that everyone has their place in this world. I belive that this will quickly become one of, if not the best, one of the best movies ever made. In my opinion of course.
Spider-Man (2002)
(sniff) I think I'm gonna cry.
You know it's been a long hard trip for movies based on comic books. From Popeye to X-men there has just always been something missing. That
something has got to be Sam Rami. While watching Evil Dead for the first time a few years back I would laugh a little and sit in awe of the
unique talents of the man responsible, but no one else seem to get it. Well now with Spiderman everyone can see the genius of this modern day master as I have. He held nothing back in capturing everything that the Spiderman is about. The slight cheesiness was perfect and let you know that this is the world of Marvel and not some dark reality. This is a place to escape to not from. He captured what Burtin did with Batman. Movies don't always have to be realistic. It is a fantasy. On top of everything he put everyone he knows in this movie. I know that for years to come this genra will be full of crap like the up and coming Daredevil movie with Ben (not an action star) Aflec as the lead and Michae Clark Duncan as Kingpin (?), but there will always be Spiderman.
Frailty (2001)
Ahhhh....
I have been waiting for this movie for a long, long time. Not directly, but it has captured everything that is beautiful about a horror movie. Bill Paxton made a wonderful directorial debut by proving that horror is a genra that is highly underated. Frailty, is a good reminder of the horror/suspense greats of the past like Night of the Hunter and Psycho.
It's anti-gore philosophy reminded me why I love the genra.

Chasing Sleep (2000)
This movie makes me fear insomnia!
Whoa! I loved this flick! It was definitely my favorite Horror of 2000. I loved the director's style, and his nack for making time disappear in this movie. Sure it was predictable, but who cares it was just so fun to watch the story unravel.
