Manhunt (2024)
Above average
If you're in it for the history aspect, it's somewhat enjoyable. They do get some things wrong (some it seems purposely/politically motivated), but most of it is true.
What isn't great is the writing. Half of what the characters say isn't something someone would say in the 1800s.
The show is also all surface level. You go from one event to another, to another period in time, and back enough to make your head spin. Nothing is deep here. A deep show would give us 1 or 2 entire episodes of Booth on the run, showing us how bad of shape he was actually in. A deep show would show us what it was like for Stanton to have to make the journey from DC to Canada. Instead, they give us a 10 second scene of him on the train, and then poof, he's there.
All of these things combined make you feel like this is truly just actors in 2024 acting like they are in the 1800s. A great show actually fools you into the fact they are there. This show fails miserably at that.
Tokyo Vice (2022)
A Tremendous Show
I've now watched all of S1 and almost all of S2, and I can confidently say this show is top notch. I always worry when what seems like an American production tries to make a show about Japan. Typically things are blatantly inaccurate & the overall feel of the country is way off. I was delighted to see that this is NOT true with Tokyo Vice, and the world of Tokyo they've built is superb.
To add to all this, the story they tell is a true one, and it's incredible. A lot of shows take incredible stories and do them all wrong-this show does not do that either. It's wonderfully told, and all the actors are great from top to bottom. I really can't tell you how great of watch this is if you follow the Yakuza, Japan, or anything related. And if you don't, it'll still keep you on the edge of your seat.
9/10 only because 10/10 is perfect, and I can only think of 2 or 3 shows/movies that are absolutely perfect.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
The Truth
If you're wondering what the truth is between the 10/10 and 3/10 reviews, here it is.
It is a great movie. Is it the best movie I've ever seen? Definitely not. But it's a really good follow-up to the first film, dare I say almost as good. There's a lot more going on in this movie, so the 2.5 hours will fly by if you liked the first movie.
There is some truth to it lacking a bit of 'soul', but never at any point did I feel like the movie was dragging or lacking enough to bore me.
The acting was superb, and the story isn't super hard to follow if you pay attention. It's definitely a must see in theaters if you enjoyed Part 1.
True Detective (2014)
Season 4 Ruined A Great Show
I would rate the first 3 seasons a 8/10, but the 4th season was so blatantly bad that I moved my score down to a 5/10. I say blatant, because it was totally avoidable & done on purpose.
Season 1 was perfection. 2 & 3 were still good shows. Season 4 isn't even the same show. Internal politics at HBO obviously played a role here, because the ending is totally unbelievable and the script ending had to be politically motivated. It's a real shame that certain people in power are now dictating the way art is created. I won't be watching Season 5, and I don't think a lot of others will as well after this fiasco.
Gran Turismo (2023)
Yes, it's good
I've got a pretty high bar for cinema-I'll be the first to say when a movie is clunky or just not well written or acted. I have none of those to say about Gran Turismo.
The beginning of the movie is very 'Ready Player One'ish' as it introduces you to a character you'll inevitably be following the whole movie.
From there, the movie really becomes good. The story is obviously great, but what carries the movie is how the two main characters show & act their emotions. I don't think you could've chosen 2 better leads.
The lead actors are spectacular, and the main character's father (who's a famous actor as well) is as always, superb.
I'm not sure why these critics are saying this movie has no soul. This movie has a TON of soul, and you'll find yourself crying at the very least, once.
The only reason I gave it an 8 is because it was nothing ground breaking. It's just a really good movie.
Das Leben der Anderen (2006)
The Best Espionage Movie That's not about Espionage
This movie is less about espionage & more about humanity, the human spirit, and the freedom to think for one's self.
Of course there are a ton of scenes that involve espionage, but the driving part of this film is the main character & his realization of good & evil. Once he's free to think for his self, he can easily separate the two.
Espionage plays a key role in allowing him to see this.
The film is beautifully written, shot, and directed. The actors are extremely convincing and well cast (both the good & the bad).
The ending does feel a bit dragged out, until you come to the final scene in the movie which is one of the best scenes I can remember. 'This is for me' has so many different meanings as we fade to the credits.
What a great story.
The Killer (2023)
If Hitman the Game was a Movie
This movie reminded me a lot of the game 'Hitman'. It's all about the life of a Hitman (which is quite boring 99.9% of the time, portrayed accurately in the movie).
For this reason, some people are disappointed that there isn't more action. I was pleasantly surprised, as it gives the viewer time to hear what the main character is actually thinking.
The story is fairly straight forward, and the main attraction is Fassbender, who does a good job as a stoic, yet sometimes comically flawed, assassin.
The acting is very good across the cast as well. My only complaint is that the main character's significant other plays a pivotal role, but her story wasn't truly fleshed out. Other than that, this is a solid watch for those who are interested in the life of someone who does other's 'dirty work'.
A Spy Among Friends (2022)
For all Espionage Fans
If you're into espionage & the history that goes along with it, then stop reading this review and go watch this show.
It is spectacular.
It's definitely not a 'shoot'em up' James Bond type show, so if you're looking for that, you may be disappointed.
However, if you're into spy movies that delve into Spy craft & the complicated relationships between spies, this is for you. If you like Cold War thrillers that follow the key spies on both sides, this is for you.
The acting is as good as it gets. The story is great, and it's a REAL ONE. The tone & look of the show is very dark, which is accurate to the time & setting in London.
What else can I say? Go watch it.
All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Shocked this is rated 7+
Anyone who's saying this is a 7+ show must either be A) Very young & ignorant of the actual events during WW2 or B) Just ignorant of WW2 in any capacity.
I gave it a chance (3 episodes). I can tell the story itself is a good one, but it's overshadowed by historical cliches and inaccuracies pretty much every 10-20 seconds. I dealt with it for a little while, but it was just too much after a few hours.
Accents are all over the place, Nazi officers are always portrayed as dogs (FYI - a lot of them weren't), there's little mention of Russia (who was a much bigger threat than the Allies), and lastly-why are there no French in France?
I'll finish it because my wife enjoys the story, but this is exactly what is wrong with a lot of the latest streaming releases. Historical facts get watered down to the point where the next generation will really believe this is how things were during WW2. There was little or no effort to try & make things believable. I can get over everyone speaking English with no subtitles, but MAKE IT BELIEVABLE. The father is probably the most atrocious case.. he shouldn't even be in this movie with that ridiculous accent.
Anyways - there are plenty of other WW2 stories that are both more entertaining and actually realistic. I would suggest paying those actors and directors tribute, since they actually put in a ton of time and effort to try and replicate things like they actually happened. This was obviously thrown together as a money grab, with little respect given to those who perished.
