I'm on a roll with watching Christmas movies this year. Some have been good, some awful (yes, Christmas With Felicity, I'm talking about you!), but Christmas on the Alpaca Farm has perhaps been the pick of the bunch so far. We begin - as so often we do - with a young woman in a high-flying job, this time in the world of fashion design. Our eco-friendly heroine Jess (Kirsten Comerford) quits after a run-in with her boss, and decides to go it alone, using alpaca fleece from family-run Flannery Farm to make a range of luxury sweaters and enter them into a competition with a big cash prize. Needless to say, the farm's boss is a handsome single dad (no shortage of widowers in Christmas films) and the longer Jess spends in his company, the stronger her feelings for him grow. The usual 'things go haywire 20 minutes from the end' section involves some righteous dummy-spitting over sustainability values, but all is soon resolved for the traditional happy ending. All in all, this was a delightful film, with plenty of nice scenery and cute alpacas on show. The best performances were from Matt Wells as farmer Flannery, and Ai Barrett as his young daughter. In summary, a heartwarming festive treat for all the family to enjoy.

Unusually charmless

The one thing I thought I could rely on in the UK's Channel 5 Christmas films was their unrelenting niceness - that is, until I saw this one (which was titled Baking My Way to Christmas in the UK, for some reason). The charm that usually fills these kind of films is sadly missing here. Making the lead character so mopey and unpleasant in the early part of the film backfires badly, and I can imagine that many viewers would have given up when the first ad break arrived. The script is terrible, the performances weak, and the story just never grips. As others have said, the 10-star reviews on here are mighty suspicious and should probably be taken with a pinch of salt.
