Music in Manhattan (1944)
Delightful
I am quite surprised that there is only 1 review of this film. Perhaps it has not been shown that often. This was my first viewing and I am a huge Anne Shirley fan. This is one of four films released in her final year in the movie industry, the final film being perhaps the best film noir mystery ever: MURDER, MY SWEET.
This film is well made. The action is consistent, moving at a solid pace with good acting, directing, editing, etc. Anne Shirley is engaging as usual and sweet & beautiful as always. The premise is interesting and the movie is quite enjoyable. The conclusion is nicely done with a delightful finish. This is one of Anne Shirley's better films. When she left the industry after 1944, she was only 26 years old. Many of her early films were well done, but "B" films, as she had started out as a child actress. Better films had begun to come her way after her Oscar nomination for STELLA DALLAS in 1937. However, no matter the caliber of the material, or the capability of the rest of the cast and producers; Anne Shirley was always a commanding presence in all her films.
I would heartily recommend this film to any movie fan: and not just classic movie fans. This is a story that could play as well today or any time. It is fun, interesting, entertaining and well done.
The Return of October (1948)
Well-worth watching
I have nothing against the other reviews, but they do not seem to convey the message that this movie is well-worth watching. Almost anything Glenn Ford was in was worth watching and for that reason I watched this one morning and was thoroughly delighted. The pace of the movie is quite lively and the various actors all competent in their various roles. The direction and editing were also good and to get all that in a movie spells just what you want in a film - entertainment! There are a substantial number of humorous moments, lines and scenes. The viewer gets drawn into the events just as do the cast which is their role in the movie. I have seen almost all of the films starring Glenn Ford and this is not a typical "Glenn Ford" movie and was not on any "must see" list of mine. Although he performed admirably, any number of people could have played his role. The value of this movie is in its production and enjoyability.
Madison Avenue (1961)
worth watching
I am not going to disagree with anything the other reviewers have said, however, if I had read these reviews first I may not have watched this movie. And this movie is worth watching. Not because there is anything special here, but merely because it is interesting and moves along at a pleasant pace. Dana Andrews is typical Dana Andrews and he is always a solid actor. Most of his movies are well-made. Jeanne Crain, although about 37 is a doll as always and therefore always worth seeing. This may not be the type of movie to schedule your evening around or set the recorder for, but it is a satisfying movie for an afternoon when you need something to entertain you.
Wings for the Eagle (1942)
an Ann Sheridan must-see
I cannot disagree with the previous reviewer's assessment that this is not a particularly outstanding movie. It was made during war time about the war effort as opposed to strictly being made for entertainment, however, there are some very positive attributes about it. The aspects of the movie that do not center around Sheridan, Morgan and Carson are a little slow and convenient for a war flick. The aspects of the movie that do center around the three stars, however, are outstanding. Ann Sheridan was one of the most beautiful women ever on screen and she is glowingly gorgeous throughout this movie. Additionally, she was a bright, sharp-witted women who in this movie gets to frequently throw verbal-barbs at her co-stars. This is one of my favorite aspects of movies that she stars in. Also, Morgan and Carson play off each other well and have several good scenes including a hilarious confrontation in a bar. This is better than most movies out there.
He Sees You When You're Sleeping (2002)
Erika! - a delight as always!
I am surprised at the summaries I have read. This movie is certainly worth seeing. Yes, it is a fantasy-themed movie with angels coming from heaven to do good deeds, but there are very many of these spiritual or supernatural themes that come out of Hollywood. I am no fan of this type of movie, but when it stars Kelly Preston (JACK FROST) or Erika Eleniak or the like I am certainly going to watch. And both movies were entertaining enough. Besides, Kelly and Erika are gorgeous in these respective flicks. Erika does a fine job in this movie as a singer. I have seen most everything she has done and this movie is better than some of the others. And Greg Evigan I believe did a good job portraying the character the way the author wanted.
Naughty But Nice (1939)
Don't miss Ann Sheridan in this
I don't place comments on most of the movies I watch (and I am a major film buff, particularly the classics of the late 30's, 40's and 50's, but I felt it necessary here as most of the comments are based on viewers with a Dick Powell focus. Powell's heyday was a little prior the timeframe of my expertise so I am not commenting upon those comments, however, Ann Sheridan is one of the most underrated actresses in film and she is outstanding in this, not to mention gorgeous. The movie is more entertaining than Powell's fans have let on with the final third of the movie quite entertaining for anyone. The increasing frustration of Powell's collegiate colleagues culminating in breaking a tree limb is well done. The scene prior to the court trial with Sheridan slapping everyone repeatedly in the producer's office is outstanding and a "must see" for film fans.
She Loved a Fireman (1937)
a movie w/Ann Sheridan
I have to second that first assessment I read. Ann Sheridan IS the only reason to watch this. However, it is also the reason TO watch it. Ann Sheridan might be the most underrated actress in motion picture history. She is always worth watching. Anything and everything she does is worth watching. This was made before she was being given significant roles which all changed with the James Cagney/Pat O'Brien classic, "Angels with Dirty Faces". That performance brought to the attention of Hollywood that she was much more than a pretty face. The three of them teamed up again in "Torrid Zone" and by then she was coming into her own. She had a tremendous off screen brother/sister repoire with Humphrey Bogart from their film "San Quentin". Although the media has consistently reminded everyone of Betty Grable as a pin-up during WWII, Ann Sheridan was right there with her.
Ice (1994)
Traci, Traci, Traci
There are a couple of scathing comments for this movie and they are right on track.
However, their descriptions of the poor quality of this movie ignore one significant detail: most fans of Traci Lords might find this entertaining. There is a lot of Traci. Yes, mostly in gun battles, not the way we want to see her. But there is a lot of her, a short shower scene, and her face is mesmerizingly attractive.
Il ritmo del silenzio (1991)
weak
This is a weak movie. Not worth seeing and that includes all you bodybuilding fans: Franco Columbo being a former Mr. Olympia winner (I saw him win in Columbus, Ohio in 1976 and again in 1981). There are better movies to see if you're looking for Traci Lords. . . and other than Franco and Traci there is absolutely no reason to watch this.
Laser Moon (1993)
rather surprising
I was rather surprised at two things in this movie: 1) that someone bothered to make this & 2) Traci Lords.
The theme is typical for a B movie mystery. Acting, writing, directing, etc.. . all mediocre. The real surprise, and only thing of any value at all, is Traci Lords. She doesn't have a role of much significance, but without exotic clothes or make-up and no particular image to portray, it was surprising how comfortable & appealing she seems to be. And she is really quite attractive.
Breach of Conduct (1994)
worth watching
This was a surprisingly enjoyable movie. Peter Coyote always does a nice job and Courtney Thorne-Smith was wonderful; and additionally, she looks great! The story is interesting and the movie is tightly directed. Good job all the way around!
The Star Maker (1981)
well worth watching!
Haven't seen this since it was first shown, but have been looking for it ever since. This is twenty years old now and made for TV, but seemed ahead of itself at the time. Beautiful people, beautiful scenery, enjoyable story - this is Must See TV. Teri Copley is gorgeous! Look for it.
Playback (1996)
entertaining
Worth watching. Probably the best quality film for Shannon Whirrey. Actual plot, reputable actors, an effort made in filming, editing, directing & production. Predictable and simple in many ways, but better than most of the efforts made by moviemakers over the past decade plus. Additionally, no, make that; More importantly, Tawni Kitaen looks GREAT throughout the movie and plays a significant role that's well done and finishes strong!
