Dead Ringers (1988)
Dead Ringers is an excellent film!
Jeremy Irons is great in this movie with a duel performance of a lifetime, easily the best example of a single actor portraying multiple people in a single film. The "body horror" exhibited in this film is of a very different sort than usual for Cronenberg. I feel that this film asks "what is identity and what is our connections to one another?" Success and downfall is connected not only to our own identities but to the relationships that we have. This movie is important and powerful, dissolving some of the cold and clinical subtext that Cronenberg typically provides.
This is not a movie to take your date to, it requires some thought and a thirst for understanding human nature. It is difficult to relax and enjoy the movie, I had a knot in my stomach through the entire two hours. However, I do feel that a film like this is worth seeing at least once because it tackles dangerous subject matter that should be investigated and discussed nowadays.
The Notorious Finster (2024)
Good little movie
This movie feels very realistic. Many of the killing scenes are not shown. There isn't much space for victims being tortured, screaming for help. The lack of shenanigans makes the movie a little more creepy and more focused on the characters.
Several of the characters are quite broken people with some sad stories. That gives the movie another note of complexity. I liked this one. The whole time I was watching it, I couldn't figure out why it was listed in the "horror section" on Prime. I think it deserves to be in drama or thriller but I definitely recommend it.
I thought the production value was pretty good for a low budget indie.
