Oppenheimer (2023)
Sometimes, older less known movies are much better
Oppenheimer is long and boring, editing is confusing mixing 3 periods, that sometimes you don't recognize, which is before which one.
I was misleaded by the trailer about what would come in the movie, Robert Downey Jr is difficult to recognize at first, but is playing well as a 2nd role.
I would preferably recommend to the people interested by "Project Manhattan", the movie "Fat Man and Little Boy "Les Maîtres de l'Ombre" from Roland Joffé, which will learn you more about scientific details than "Oppenheimer" which is more a biopic and take too much time on political theater against communism, which much too long unuseful dialogs.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Far from Crichton original spirit
As a fan of Crichton novels and movies in general,
I was disappointed by the way the scenarists
made the story drifting more and more away from the original thematics.
However the numerous CGI effects, it seems this episode
was most a way to reuse stuff and materials (trucks, visitors ball, cages,
enclosures,...) of the previous movies, a brief appearance of Jeff Goldblum
to make the link to the original movie...
I did not like the story of this one. Lot of incoherences,...
The way the main characters are left on the island, Chris Pratt still alive after being shot one dinosaur dose, Chris Pratt paralysed managing to escape the lava, the lab under the castle without the grandfather knowing it, and only with one guy working in the lab, the idea to bring all the dinosaurs on the continent, the kill of the grandfather, the lift episode, , didn't understand why Howard is pointing with a laser to Pratt on the roof, and how the bad guys are eventually killed.
The bad guys acting is poor.
I think Crichton would not let this one going on the screen with the script as it has been done. Even soundtrack is poor, and only interesting when referring to John Williams original theme.
Didn't realise the end Pteranodon sequence was in Las Vegas, before I rerad in the reviews,... was thinking first it was Paris... like with SpiderMan No Way Home, and other movies when sequel happens in Europe sometimes...
Cherchez la femme (2017)
Long time I haven't laugh so much, in one movie
"Cherchez la Femme/Some like it veiled" manages, without vulgarity to make laugh on a "highly-risky" thematic which at first you would not think it would be possible to reach such comic effects with so controversial subject, but for me, it worked for me, I laughed heartlily, and found it very nicely done... with the same kind of spirit of Gérard Oury's "Rabbi Jacob". This movie demonstrates a master work from a new woman director : Sou Abadi (she knew very well her subject and how to surfed carefully on the edge of prejudices), with a convincing interpretation of Camelia Jordana and her actor friends ! If you are ready to laugh lightly and sincerely of almost everything, it is worth to watch.
I had not laugh so much from a movie, since long time, and it felt good. Reminded me some "Ernst Lubitsch" (To be or not to be) or "Jerry Lewis" (The Errand Boy) comedies, where everybody runs after everybody. Makes my laughing time for year 2019 when I had seen it on tv.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
So much money, so long movie, so short story
I was really disappointed by the so small density of the story.
I was expecting much more...
I almost fell asleep so the rythm of the movie is so sloooow.
At the end of this movie, I had absolutely no clue about what happened or would happened next....
Zimmer tries to respect Vangelis legacy, but only managed to keep us awake while the story was sinking into the sea.
Compare to the prequel, all the image have more fog and smoke...
The bad guy is blind and lives in a stupidly esthetically yellow room with
a couple of sofas, in a middle of a swimming pool.
The bad girl is just destroying the dreams of the good girl for sadic pleasure and it is the saddest part of the story.
Don't understand why they let K. alive when taking Deckard, as they wanted
absolutely not to let any track... ? What is the role of this real small wooden horse apart for losing the spectator into wrong tracks...
I would like to see the scenarists which destroy a potential good subject into a poor story fired from the studios and replaced by more imaginatives persons.
I give 2 stars, only for the nicely designed flying cars and the way they always nicely turn around before parking ;) reminding me of the cow-boys parking their nice stallions in front of each saloon in the western with John Wayne.
Portraitist (2019)
A short worth some long ones !
With not much words, a simple idea, and only 15 minutes,
the director builds a very interesting plot,
with a very nice surprise at the end
(not a twist, just a pure poetic impression, really well framed).
A must to see, up to the unexpected but logical end !
Mr Hublot (2013)
A numerical/mechanical version of Wallace and Gromit
A numerical/mechanical version of Wallace and Gromit
This is what I have thought watching this short movie.
After 2 minutes, .apparentment is obvious, but copyright not infringed,
just same spirit and sense of humor.
Silently, as the two more famous heroes of Aardman production, you are discovering the life of Mr Hublot.
Like Mr Wallace, he likes inventing stuff to make his life easier, and
he likes to have a no-probelm regular life...
Until a mechanical dog come and joins his life.
The prowess of the directors is to be able to transmit character feelings
with a character with non-human and tin skin. Not an easy way to
express feelings using a smile, but it works well.
And this is a really enjoyable movie to watch.
Nice that he got an Oscar for it.
We had seen it on a drive-in thematised with Luxemburg short movies, and people applaused at the end. Nice short story, all public, feeling good !
Just a question, did not know why this Mr Hublot had some numbers counting on top of his face.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
boring, woud have expected more from a trilogy ending
The 1st episode of the trilogy was interesting and challenging. The way a group of young people get out of the original maze. 2nd was still ok, but already less palpitant.
But during this 3rd episode, I didn't fill any. It looks like "Blade Runner" (for the aesthetic of the futuristic city) would merge into "World War Z",... during the whole movie we are asking ourselves the reason and connection to the original maze. Characters seemed to me less charismatic than in the 1st episode.
The movie becomes sometimes ultra-violent for nothing. There are parts of the movie which are just like fillers, to make it longer.
Apart from the cascade from the introduction sequence (where even O'Brien was seriously hurted and the film had its finalization postposned from at least 6 months), and a small surprise stunt with a "bus", I almost fell asleep during the whole movie. Seriously disappointed. Don't understand how some people could put this movie more than 4 stars.
Les traducteurs (2019)
Night Shyamalan way ! intricated but good plot !
I was very warmly surprised by the nice intrigue of this movie.
Those who like plots like those put in scenes by Night Shyamalan
will appreciate this movie.
The story is complex, and if you see it in original language (French)
you will need to master french enough/well (level 8) recommended.
Otherwise you could miss part of the story resolution...
or you could wait that an English version will be produced (I don't know it is already available).
Story is complex and lot of flashback(s) could make you a little in the fuzzy, but I think it is a deliberate will of the director. In fact this movie is a game between
you (the spectator) and the director.
And when you will get out of the cinema, you will realize the director as played with you and your mind a lot.
It would definitely be a good subject for a American remake, if the translated english version will take time to get out I think.
If you like Night Shyamalan movies, and "Agatha Christie"-like plots, this is definitely a movie for you. You could not see this movie twice the same !
I really spend a nice moment watching it, that's why I put a nine stars !
Enjoy too, feedback (but not spoils) welcome !
Maestro (2014)
Light, fun and nice,...
I have passed a very nice moment to watch this movie,
evocating the life around short budget european"author" movies.
The actor direction is nice, Michael Lonsdale is great in the
role of a very older director than him. This makes me think
to some american comedy like "Serendipity (Un amour à New-York)",
but at the "french way (even if the director is Swiss ;)
Didn't realize before the end that this was basesd on a real story
with Eric Rohmer and Jocelyn Quivrin...
Contrary to some Dany Boyle's biopic, this one is fun, and has a very
light and fun atmosfer, making real life events like a novel !
I laugh a lot, at unexpected moments,... and would have liked Lonsdale
got an award for such a unusual role from his previous movie playlist.
I usually don't like Rohmer's movie, but that noveled way of one moment of
his life, make me try to look at the real "Celadon" movie and try to find as much humor and fun in that one that I have found in "Maestro".
Steve Jobs (2015)
One of the most boring movie I haven't seen !
Except the role of Kate Winslet, that she interprets well,
as I didn't recognize her at first, the rest of the movie
is as boring and annoying as working on a Mac.
You think from the title or the computer that you will see have
something interesting and enjoyable but at the end you will
be disappointed by what remains...
I have tried to see this movie twice when running on TV, and I really
fell asleep twice,... as the content of this movie is completely insipid.
This movie is just a collection of "behind the scenes" discussions, purely
sterile and interpretation of Fassbender, does not bring any interest to
that movie.
The only interest is to realize that behind Jobs ideal, his purpose
was to make the maximum of profit from his customers, like some
gurus in some religion.
It is just also showing in some way or obtuse the character personality was,
at the limit between obsession and autism,... but was it worth to make a
movie from that ?
If I could have put a "zero pointed" stars to this movie,
I would have given that movie that score !
The story of and destiny of "Alan Turing" was much more interesting as a movie subject.
Switch (2011)
Good recreational french/belgian thriller,...
I have watched this movie, almost accidentally on TV, while switching channels, and stay up to the end... and apart for some gross incoherences in the scenario (as described in some former reviews), some facts are too unbelievable. I was however really impressed by the way the action was shown on the screen.... The two cameras filming is particularly well adapted for the running chases.... which are definitely worth to see, showing an impressing dexterity of the filming team as well as the cutting team. You feel well the dispair of the running girl and the perseverance of the pursuing cop, at some moment you could think she will resign but she goes on... very well done... Some stair chase viewpoints are very unusual, and fun to see, like slipping on a ramp, but very well rendered... Cantona is a credible police detective, I have liked his pugnacity, and the distress of the victim is well perceived too. This will provide me incentive to investigate deeper the posterious work of this promising director and cinematographer...
