Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
Unique premise, intriguing plot
This show takes a couple of episodes to get going but by episode 3 it takes off and the momentum just keeps building from there. This is an intriguing story of a "straight-man" sitcom wife who reaches her limit with her manchild husband and breaks bad. Some reviewers are complaining that the sitcom parts are not funny, but they're not supposed to be - it's a drama that deconstructs the sitcom tropes by making you consider the real-world implications of the silly shenanigans. The sitcom segments are disturbing, particularly in the second half of the season when we know the characters well enough to see past the laugh track and recognise what's really going on. The drama of the main plot is intense, with the stakes continually rising as the season goes on. Allison and Patty are both wonderful, well-developed characters and I'm looking forward to seeing more of them in season 2.
Knives Out (2019)
Fun little whodunit
Knives Out is a wonderful homage to Agatha Christie novels - fans of Hercule Poirot are bound to enjoy this movie. Just as with the books, everyone has secrets and clues abound, and I had a blast trying to piece everything together before the characters could lay it out. There's nothing particularly new or innovative about Knives Out, but it is a great watch for anyone who enjoys a classic whodunit.
Captain Marvel (2019)
A solid MCU origin story
MCU movies vary widely in scope and tone, and most origin story movies tend to be smaller, more intimate and more character-focussed then their sequels. Captain Marvel falls squarely into this category, so while it can't compete with the likes of the Avengers movies, it certainly holds its own against Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and Black Panther. It delivers as an enjoyable Friday night movie with interesting characters, fun dialogue and enough twists and turns to keep the story interesting - and I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.
Ignore the negative reviews - many people were prejudiced against this movie during development and were bombarding it with poor ratings long before release.
Passengers (2016)
Beautiful; let down by the marketing
This movie is an underrated gem that was unfortunately let down by the marketing.
I've seen a number of criticisms that the movie is 'boring' and 'nothing happens', and from what I remember the trailers did promise a suspenseful, action-packed sci-fi adventure.
That's not what this movie is about.
Passengers is a beautiful, slow-paced story about a man who is facing a lifetime of total isolation. It takes its time exploring his desperation, distractions and despair before sidestepping into a love story between two characters who are surprisingly genuine, and who manage to be sympathetic even when they're being immoral.
The movie is atmospheric above all else with fantastic acting and a haunting score, but I never felt that it dragged, and I was invested in the story from beginning to end.
I'm so glad that I ignored the critics and gave this movie a chance - it's so much better than I expected.
Black Panther (2018)
Vastly overrated
I want to start this review by stating that I am not American, so the racial/cultural impact this movie was not something that I can really relate to and as such I am rating this movie for its own merits rather than what it represents.
Is it a bad movie? No. The acting is great, the costumes are gorgeous, the protagonists have depth, and the scenery is at times breathtaking. I don't think it deserves all these one-star reviews.
Is it a great movie? ...No. The plot is fairly predictable and formulaic, the use of 'vibranium' to solve every issue that arises feels a little cheap, and the main villain is fairly cliche.
Most importantly, for me this movie was missing the one element that Marvel movies have consistently delivered: it just wasn't fun. There's very little of the humour that we're used to seeing, there's no surprising plot twists, and the action scenes are at best so-so and at worst an onslaught of terrible CGI that would look out of date 10 years ago.
So all in all: watch it once if you're a Marvel fan or if you are interested in the cultural impact side of things. But if you're a casual movie-goer just looking to relax and enjoy yourself for a fun few hours, try Spider-Man: Homecoming or Thor: Ragnarok instead. This is one MCU movie I won't bother rewatching.
South Park: Elementary School Musical (2008)
Great Episode!
Without a doubt, this is one of the best episodes of season 12! The school has become obsessed with High School Musical, and everyone but the boys has taken up singing and dancing. Stan worries over losing Wendy to a third-grader, and the other three aim to save their dignity by staying out of the fad altogether.
It might be yet another movie parody, but let's face it: it's about time someone parodied HSM, and South Park's usual rude, crude and controversial nature made the kids' transformation into the epitome of political correctness (with lyrics like 'everyone is special in their own way') that much more jarring and hilarious. The domestic abuse storyline could have become unwatchable but was saved by its satisfactory resolution, and the banter between the main boys was classic! Also, the last song and dance routine just made the whole episode worthwhile.
Bottom line: if you don't like HSM, you'll love this. And if you haven't seen HSM, just sit back and enjoy the music :)
South Park: Major Boobage (2008)
Best S12 episode so far
The first two episodes of season 12 were somewhat disappointing, but Major Boobage has proved that Matt and Trey haven't lost the magic touch that got me hooked on South Park in the first place. Cartman's Anne Frank-style subplot was hilariously ironic and it's great to see a bit more of the adults with a Gerald Brofloski-centred storyline, although the kids still have plenty of screen time. The animation is fabulous - on par with 'Good Time With Weapons' and 'Make Love Not Warcraft' - and the script is amazing! For me though, the best part was the focus on Kenny in this episode - he's an awesome character who's been slowly hazed out over the last few years, so it's great to see him making a comeback, and now he's funnier than ever! Kyle and Stan also have their fair share of dialogue, although sadly Butters makes only a small appearance.
Overall, this has definitely gone down as one of my favourite episodes, with a fabulous script and humour that had me laughing out loud the entire time. 9/10
