Random Acts of Violence (2019)
One of the best horror movies of the year
I'm a lifelong horror fan who watches about 60 horror movies a year and I loved this film. I loved the acting and dialogue from the two main actors. Their relationship was very authentic to my wife and I. The film made you think and it also had me on the edge of my seat throughout. I was terrified. This had the best of the horror genre and also something new and different than the rest. I'm shocked by all the negative reviews. I usually agree with 80% of the years "Best Horror Movies of the Year" lists and was dumbfounded that this was only listed on three when the past three years saw Mohawk, Luz (Germany), Hagazussa and She Dies Tommorrow on 4 or more lists! This is easily in my top 5 horror films of the year.
Dead Mary (2007)
Intense and gripping horror
Dead Mary. Damn good movie. Surprisingly great direction with a very talented cast and an intelligent and realistic script. The film starts out uncomfortable then intense as it shows the dysfunctional relationships between some old friends who spend a weekend by the lake with each other. They seem completely sick of each other and are going through the motions of "keeping in touch" even though they probably hate each other more by now. They become bored the first night and dare to play the game of "Dead Mary". You take a candle into a darkened room with a mirror and repeat the words "Dead Mary" three times into the mirror. This is supposed to bring the horrendous "bloody Mary" to life. A few of the friends attempt this to not much luck. Later on that night the horror unfolds. Torture and blood starts flowing fast in this suspenseful and horrifying gem. I hope to see more Canadian horror movies out of director/producer Robert Wilson and writers Christopher Warre Smets and Peter Sheldrick. Thanks go out to the filmmakers for not trying to pose this film as if it were American. It's pitiful to see so many inept Canadian horror films try to fly American flags throughout their films in an attempt to gain American acceptance. How they think that posing as an American film helps them (when their movies suck in the first place) I have no idea. They just don't get it. Horror fans love excellent horror movies. It doesn't matter if it's an Italian Giallo from Dario Argento or a Japanese ghost story like the original Grudge and Ring films. We only want films that are able to keep us on the edge of our seats which this movie does throughout.
War of the Dead (2006)
Should not have been released.
I don't know how this actually got released. I do realize that there probably were intentional jokes in this but it is hard to tell. I saw this movie at two video stores here in the Cowichan Valley, BC! So congratulations for that. To the maker of this film: I do admire your ability to "produce a film" fast plus make many copies of it on a professional looking DVD and make a good cover for the DVD. It's great to see someone making horror movies from Canada also. But thankfully you posed this film as if it were American (Washington, U.S.A. not Ontario, Canada.) That was the saving grace of the DVD because I'm Canadian. It was also a relief to see that the Canadian government didn't give money to help this get made. Use your strengths to release DVD's to video stores, but please have all different cast and crew make the film itself.
