The Contract (1988)

Excellent TV movie highlighting spy movements across inner German Border
8 October 2002
This was a marvellous 3 part TV movie (3 hours total) about an attempt to bring a Russian missile manufacturer to defect to the west. The plan goes horribly wrong and the spy sent to persuade him over has to take the old man and his daughter across country and through the east German border fence. I've never seen this on video or DVD and sadly it was only aired once back in the mid eighties. Would be worth checking out or a TV re-run if only to highlight what a dangerous thing it was to try and escape from east to west.

Fantastic series worthy of a re-release
8 October 2002
I have never tired of watching this excellent series since it was first aired back in the eighties. I had the foresight to tape every episode and always try to watch as much of it as I can when it's good old entertainment I'm looking for. Great settings - Mexico, Berlin. For historical value its great to see all the scenes filmed in the vicinity of the Berlin Wall when cold war tension was high. The perfomances of all the actors bring Deighton's characters to life - Bernie, Werner, Fiona, Dickie etc. are all portrayed very well.
