Henry V (1989)
Great Shakespeare AND a great film!
Simply the best film adaptation of one of the greatest of historical dramas, this film is as true to the plot and characterization as possible. With the young Henry played straight-up by Branagh and the court of mostly youthful advisors (remembering that only a few leader/warriors would reach even middle age in the early fifteenth century), the audience is treated to a realistic rendition of life and court intrigue by a cast of fine actors; this film is possibly the best of Branagh and the Bard, though the later Hamlet is a fine film as well!
10/10
Come Fill the Cup (1951)
Great Film!
Simply the best "recovery" movie! Cagney's performance is Oscar quality, as is James Gleason's. Even Phyllis Thaxter and Raymond Massey are believable in this film. The musical score is superb, with Grieg-esque overtones. Perhaps the best billboard (7 Dwarves Whiskey) in moviedom. 10/10
Mother Night (1996)
A Great film version of a great novel!
The folk who produced this masterful film have done fine service to a novel that stands as perhaps the best fiction work centering upon human guilt and human responsibility ever published. Nolte takes the role of Howard W. Campbell, Jr., and makes it his own, remaining true to Vonnegut's depiction of a man who has lost ALL (to and) for Love.
No weaknesses in this fine adaptation.
The Great Sioux Massacre (1965)
Just Plain Laughable
Watch the final battle scenes at the end of this film-- if you can tolerate laughably bad acting and directing. If the Sioux had been as inefficient as depicted, Custer MIGHT have become president!
