Chalo Dilli (2011)
8/10
"Do not judge people by face value.... Including yourself".
25 September 2011
"The road of life twists and turns and no two directions are ever the same. Yet our lessons come from the journey, not the destination."

Chalo Dilli is a road trip movie, and like all such movies, is centered around two totally unlike strangers who are forced to make a trip together to reach their common destination.A bizarre journey full of adventure, madness and crazy comic moments with the oddest traveling couple ever!! (Lara Dutta travels in airplanes, while Vinay Pathak prefers General Class Rail journey...She smokes Virginia Slims, he chews Gopal Zarda !!)

Through the process in Chalo Dilli, one comes across some real people who teach you some truths of life. Director Shashant Shah has successfully directed a clean comedy (Chalo Dilli), which is not mindless and slapstick.Actors have played their part to perfection with special reference to Vinay Pathak and Lara Dutta.

Though the film is real and hits the right note, there are a few loop holes that comes out clearly. There were a few flat moments in Chalo Dilli, that could have been avoided. Probably, a more crisp and tight writing would have resulted in a more impactive climax.

Over all, Chalo Dilli is an exciting and amusing watch, with terrific moments. If you are looking for a decent light watch, with Indian touch, then Chalo Dilli is something that you can't afford to miss.

3 Deewarein (2003)
9/10
Welcome change in Bollywood
19 September 2010
3 Deewarein has lots of minute punches that will pierce in the senses. It is a film where everything is designed to match the mood. While Ajayan Vincent's cinematography is apt, Kishore Choksi and Praveen do their best in the art department. Together, they make it sure that the atmosphere looks real throughout. The music is just used when it is required most. Editing by Sonjib Dutta is flawless.

It's the performances of actors that will engross you more into the film. The real scene-stealer is Naseeruddin Shah. He shows why he is one of India's best actors. Adding layers of emotion and subtlety to his character, he makes the audience feel for the character right from his very first scene.Juhi is outstanding as well.

But 3 Deewarein ultimately belongs to writer-director Kukunoor, who has the movie firmly under control. Tightly written and well-directed, he shows no nervousness handling a genre different from what he, or other Bollywood filmmakers, have handled before. Still, this movie will not be liked much by those who still have mindsets of 80s and 90s and who crave for crappy songs and clichéd scenes. Otherwise, if you understand what is good and enjoyable, you will definitely fall in love with 3 Deewarein.

One of the finest thriller of Bollywood
3 March 2009
The Stoneman Murders is an engaging thriller based on the real-life incident of serial killings by a ruthless killer dubbed as the "Stoneman". It takes place in the city of Mumbai, where serial killings are taking place at a rapid pace. Taking its premise from those incidents and referring to media coverage of the case, writer-director Manish Gupta constructs a screenplay that is derived from hard facts where available, and imagination to fill in the gaps.

"The Stoneman Murders" reveals the horrifying secret, like a proper murder mystery should, right at the end. The narrative is linear and non-fussy, the story-telling direct, peppered with some truly chilling moments. The gathering of forensic evidence, the photographs of the corpses, and the sifting that follows is classic detective territory, and the director does a good job of keeping it simple, but keeping it going. Kay Kay Menon takes the film to the heights with his remarkable performance. Arbaaz Khan is good to watch. Vikram Gokhale and Rukhsar are okay. Rest of the cast is average.

On the whole, ʽThe Stoneman Murdersʼ is the finest thriller churned out on Bollywood scene ever. Itʼs an appealing film to watch.

Superb Suspense !!!!!
1 February 2009
This sequel to "Raaz" is finally worth watching for Kangana's portrait of traumatized womanhood. An act she has mastered. Mohit has gone right in the casting as well. Emraan is just perfect for the part and his expressions speak a lot. It is not the same Emraan you have been seeing till now. Kangana enacts her part well and succeeds in getting your sympathy.

The film is a definite must watch, it delivers more than it promises. it is that one good horror film, that Hindi horror film fans have been deprived for a long time .

There are sufficient twists and turns plotted at just the right juncture to give you shocks. The suspense too is well maintained right till the climax. Generally Bollywood horror films tend to have lengthy and at times unconvincing flashbacks to support the happenings but thankfully in here the flashback is not only slickly shot but is also right in length and very convincing. The camera-work by Ravi Walia deserves special mention especially for night shots which are aplenty in the film. He has succeeded in creating the right eerie atmosphere. The song are well placed too and thankfully few.

Maharathi (2008)
7/10
An unqualified Thriller with unanswered questions !!!
9 December 2008
Shivam Nair's film Maharathi is a suspense thriller that keeps many questions unanswered till the end. The film comes with some of the finest performance of lead actors but that doesn't make up for the flaws in the script. The film is about how a common man gets the property money of his employer and the legal aspect of making a will is not convincingly clarified..

Adapted from a very popular Gujarati play by the same name, Maharathi makes for an interesting watch solely for the performance of almost all its lead actors. But what keeps on striking the viewer constantly are the limitations of a play being adapted to the big screen. Firstly, for a thriller, the plot appears far too stretched, especially in the first half. Then once the first major twist in the plot takes place, what follows is at times, a matter of convenience. OK even if you are willing to forgive some cinematic liberties, what really comes out is not only predictable but also raises many questions..

If you want a taste of a desi version of Sleuth, Peter Shaffer's spellbinding play-turned-film, go watch Maharathi. The story may be different, the edge of danger is almost similar.

it should be .... Meerabhai Get Out !!!!!
5 December 2008
It's often said that cricket and Bollywood are two major passions of Indians. Director Chandrakant Kulkarni's MEERABAI NOT OUT narrates the story of a cricket enthusiast who goes to the extremes -- even on the day of her engagement -- to watch a game of cricket.

But interesting ideas don't necessarily translate into interesting films. MEERABAI NOT OUT suffers because there's not much meat in its script. It's only during the penultimate moments that things begin to move, but that isn't enough to salvage the situation.

MEERABAI NOT OUT may give an impression of being a 'cricket film', but it's misleading. It's primarily a love story. In fact, a major part of the screen time is devoted to the love story, which, frankly, lacks the fizz.

Mandira and Ejaz Khan acts their part well.On the whole, MEERABAI NOT OUT is a below average fare and deserves to get clean bowled from the theaters in the first day itself !!!!!

Oh, My God!! (2008)
5/10
Oh, My God !!' Indeed, the film stays faithful to its name ...
5 December 2008
Oh, My God!! (OMG) is a film that bases itself on the premise 'be careful of what you wish for, lest it comes true'. Now, it's not a theme that hasn't been explored before. Bruce Almighty is just one of the many films that come to mind when you think of this genre. Yet OMG, quite unlike Bruce Almighty, refuses to entertain and ends up being such a drab, you feel like throwing eggs at the screen.

OH, MY GOD!! may not be the ideal multiplex fare, but it has its heart in the right place . Bt the film has been let down by the poor direction and screenplay ... cinematography and script is simply pathetic !!!!

Dil Kabaddi (2008)
4/10
Strictly for adult viewing !!!
5 December 2008
Till sometime back, the three-letter word, sex, was considered taboo on the Hindi screen. But it's out of the closet now. Dil Kabaddi goes a step further it takes you inside the bedroom of two couples and makes you listen to the bedroom chat that they indulge in, bringing the sex lives out in the open.It tries to explore fields like sexual needs and fantasies in marriage but the movie ends up showing nothing but confused relationships .

Dil Kabaddi is a humorous and exaggerated take on the dynamics of the relationships between married couples, without being judgemental. It reveals the internal dilemma of the characters as they struggle to maintain or easily let go of their marriages, to fulfill their deeper desires.

Rahul Bose and Irrfan Khan have done challenging roles and same for the actresses Soha Ali Khan and Konkona. The film has been made keeping multiplex viewers in mind but it is not for kids and families. Even all multiplex viewers won't go for the kind of confusion concept.

The question is not whether Indian audiences are ready for a theme like this. The question is, does the script hold your attention for the next 2 hours? Sadly, it doesn't!

Sorry Bhai! (2008)
4/10
Too bold and startling for the Indian audiences ..
1 December 2008
Onir has made the heartfelt My Brother Nikhil and the ponderous Bas Ek Pal before this, and must have wanted to do a romantic comedy-drama for a change, but maybe this is just not his genre. He fails to hold your attention for two hours. The biggest blame for the same goes for the poor scripting. Sorry Bhai is predictable from the word go and the dull pace literally puts you off to sleep. The film "Sorry Bhai" has a set of elderly couple romancing on screen and three youngsters who are confused over their relationship. The film has a simple script with no twists and turns but the actors are smart to make the show less tedious. A few moments in the film are catchy and most of the part is predictable. The film has been shot in Mauritious and the locations are beautiful. Actors are non glamorous but effective performers and dialogues are impressive. Only weakness is the script that has low scope to get dramatic. Sharman Joshi as the younger shy brother looks fine in his role. Shabana Azmi and Boman are amazing and their on screen chemistry has been exploited well in the film. Sanjay Suri is OK. Chitra looks OK performance wise. A Below Average Flick ...

Yuvvraaj (2008)
9/10
A Worthwhile Experience from showman with a Blend of family values and Love...
29 November 2008
Warning: Spoilers
Subhash Ghai's loveliest film in years has a symphonic texture, feel and movement to it. From the opening shots of Katrina Kaif labouring lusciously over the cello to the montage towards the end when Boman Irani, playing a zany surgeon, hops skips and jumps in the hospital corridor to announce the hero's recovery, "Yuvvraaj" reworks old themes of family ties and unequal love matches to suit a new clientele.

It says it's okay to want money. But it's not okay to sacrifice family for funds. The palate is passionate. The look, feel and flavour of the presentation are near-exquisite. Ghai's hard-earned reputation as a showman is on show here with shimmering austerity.

Placed at the exotic backdrops of Austria, Deven Yuvvraaj (Salman Khan) and Anushka (Katrina Kaif) are in love and as clichéd; her father Dr. Banton (Boman Irani) obstructs their relationship. On the initial stages, it's between Deven-Banton and scenario shifts onto different vistas as Deven's father lasts his breath in London. Not for affection and paying homage, Deven gets back to his hometown seeking for shares in father's wealth. Over there, he encounters his unloved brothers Gyanesh Yuvvraaj (Anil Kapoor) and Danny Yuvvraaj (Zayed Khan).

Gyanesh Yuvvraaj possessing autism from his childhood goes the apple-of-eye for everyone in the family, once attorney-close friend of his father (Mithun Chakraborthy) reveals that entire property is favored on him. Not alone Deven and Danny, but other relatives sham themselves to be good with their opprobrious inner evil intentions.

What makes the film so colossally spectacular? Undoubtedly, it's melodious tunes of Rahman and Kabir Lal's visualizing of emblazoned locations. Moreover, on-screen actors performing a different show with their distinct roles surmount your prospects. It's a complete show by Anil Kapoor and this man transfixes your with his simpatico-kind-of-role. Be it his mirthful encounters with Salman or the emotional outbreak in the penultimate, he overshadows everyone and each prop in the frame. Don't miss his fabulous gestures after watching handycam in the climax. Hats off to Subash Ghai! His genuineness of inserting symbolic representation where Anil Kapoor breaks the masks on table after viewing handycam is superb. Of course, the song 'Dil Ka Rishta' following this sequence as broken mask at backdrops of stage. It's something you call 'Director's cut'. A new dawn and a great break for Zayed Khan and let him thank Subash for it. Hope, directors watch out for his performance offering him best roles in future. With her cherubic looks and decent performance, Katrina Kaif steals the show and watching her play cello, it looks realistic. No wonder in appreciating her looks alike of Princess Diana at certain parts. Boman Irani pulls your attention with his laudable performance in all contexts, especially in the climax. Aushima Sawhney sways with finesse and ditto to Anjan Srivastava as antagonist. Salman Khan establishes a perfect room with his pleasing act on all scenarios till the final credits (similar to Om Shanthi Om).

On narration, Yuvvraaj doesn't start off with a gripping screenplay and perhaps, it's merely bits-n-pieces of lad and missy in love and father opposing their relations. Well, things shift on paradigms once Mithun Chakraborthy appears on the screen and unravels a great surprise amongst other characters. Few flaws of uninteresting parts may be spotted in the first half and everything goes diminished in the penultimate of 20-25mins binding your hearts, soaking eyes with tears and sparkling your lips with smiles. It's very rare amongst auteurs blending different emotions within short durations and Subash Ghai deserves grand appreciations for it.

Rahman's musical score is refreshing with 'Tu Hi Meri Dost' and 'Dil Ka Rishta'. Merely, visualizations could have been better for 'Tu Hi Meri Dost' as he could've avoided Computer Generated works. Background score works well, especially where Salman reveals his inner intentions to Anil Kapoor after sipping drinks and penultimate sequences are top-notching. Kabir Lal's cinematography mesmerizes everyone and his enchanting shots of European locales goes in-hand with Rahman's musical. It's a billion dollar question why Subash Ghai had to pass-scenes while characters drive car on such beautiful locales.

As a whole, Yuvvraaj is splendiferous in all parts with exceptional performance by all and it's a perfect family entertainer. As in "Pardes" and "Yaadein", Ghai questions joint-family values and the rapidly-changing equations in modern times. While pricking our collective conscience, "Yuvvraaj" rarely throws up a moment when we can't look Ghai's vision straight in the eye. It is among the finest films of 2008.
