The Kill (1968)
2/10
Not a horror and not very good. But it does have Uschi Digard, but that does not warrant the price of admission.
21 March 2015
I watched this as one of the catacomb of creepshows.

Famous for being the 1st American movie for Swedish Sexbomb Uschi Digard and directed by the ultra prolific Gary Graver.

Supposedly a comedy sexploitation film. Also known as the kill and blood hunger.

Antoinette is a young girl searching for her brother. She is abducted and raped by the gang responsible. So what does a woman do. Dust yourself off, go and hire a private eye and pay him by doffing your clothes and give him a right seeing to, that's what !!!! Oh and don't forget to take him to the warehouse where you were violated, get on the same bed and get sexy again !!! I don't think so, how times have changed.

No one really talks in the film. They are basically overdubbed by a voice over artist that explains the action on screen. The women in the film are only there to get naked as much as possible and look pretty in their 70's pants. And that sums the film up nicely PANTS.

I thought that this was an edited version of a longer film as the running time is 45 mins. But there does not appear to be any other version. So bit of a blessing really.

Not much to enjoy in this sword and sorcery fantasy
21 March 2015
I watched this on the Catacombs of creepshow box set and found this to be one of the lesser efforts. I really can't tell you much of the plot as my mind wandered continuously. I want's to find a review on this title to refresh my memory, but could not find one anywhere, so that did not help.

Set in days gone by. A young woman (Dewin) is caught stealing by Nika. They form a bond and travel together. On their journey they meet a monk and various sorcerers. Oh and don't forget the zombies.

Some decent acting, but the plot did not keep my interest at all. The zombies are of poor quality powder on face type. There are no horror or gore elements. The CGI is poor. I did like the rousing music and the medieval costuming.

Decent indie horror
21 March 2015
The Walkers AKA Goregoyles 2: The walkers is about two on the run bank robbers. Their car breaks down and they flee into the woods with the police hot on their tails.

Once on the woods it is not long before they loose their way and they are trapped. It soon becomes a battle of survival.

Half decent acting and a story that kept my attention throughout, meant a pleasant 49 minutes.

There is one scene of gore which I thought was well done.

This can be purchased as a Goregoyles 1 and 2 box set. This is head and shoulders above the other. Holy terror.

I was not enthralled by the Action, thanks Mr Jackson
20 March 2015
Action Jackson (1988) is a throwback to the days of Blackpolitation. All the nasty characters are white power hungry bigots.

Carl Weathers (of Rocky fame), plays the title character. He has been demoted from Lieutenant to Sergeant, due to pulling the arm off of someone "he had a spare" says Jackson, to his boss.

Jackson sets involved in trying to stop a big wig crime lord setting up one of his people to run for high office and control government. On the way there is lots of fist fighting and violent action.

Best thing about this is the stunning Vanity, playing a junkie singer, and she is not really know for her acting prowess.

I just found the story to be confusing and rather boring and I found it hard to engage with the film. Most people seem to like it so I am in the minority.

1st review for this title and I wish it was better news.
15 March 2015
On reading the summary of this film of the IMDb I think that I have only seen half a film. I watched this in the 50 movie DVD box set Catacombs of Creepshow. The Disc Menu states that this is Goregoyles : the ho;y terror. There is a second film on the same disc called Gorgoyles 2: the walkers, so perhaps this is the other half split into two films.

A man is possessed and realises he is a pawn in a fight between good and evil.

Low budget indie which was nothing special. Even in the short running time of 57 mins. I found my attention wandering. I likes some of the music and there is a bit of gore, but nothing rally to recommend to anyone.

One of my shorter reviews as I am struggling to find anything note worthy to critique.

Dead Country (2008)
3/10
A new low for Ted. V Mikels and that's saying something.
15 March 2015
Dead Country is about a alien that lands on earth and spreads a deadly virus that turns the town of Romero (get it).

The only thing of note about this film is the genre names associated to this. William Malone, Ted V. Mikels, Lloyd Kaufman and Lisa Wilcox.

There really is no plot to speak of, just a lot of unrelated scenes. So that people can say that they have had some screen time.

One thing that was really irritating was the fact that there were vast swathes of this film with no dialogue. Now I do not mean that this was silent film. In a lot of sections there is background music and incidental sounds coming from the speakers. The characters are actually talking, but not sound can be heard. It was like the film makers did not have time to post sync the dubbing onto the completed film. This is not a problem throughout all of the film, so why just a large portion?

There is some gore, but really not enough to warrant a view.

A load of naked women does not make a great movie
13 March 2015
Slaughtered is about a serial killer who recruits models to pose for his web sight the "slaughtered sheep", they are the sheep and he slaughters them. That's the plot in a nutshell.

There is a lot of nudity on display, so if you like goth girls getting naked then this film is going to be a winner for you. However if you want a film with some character development, then you will be sorely disappointed.

A very sloppy film re errors. The detective calls the web site the slaughtered Lamb, when on screen it say sheep and is referred as thus on several occasions. One victim is shot point blank in the mouth, this does not stop her from blinking on a number of occasions.

There is some gore and some of the situations are in poor taste. There is a bit of a sub plot about the serial killer being a tortured soul.

Not great but I have seen a lot worse.

Death Factory (2002 Video)

A good solid effort with a memorable monster
8 March 2015
Six teens decide to party in an old abandon factory. Hey it don't matter that there was secret experiments being carried out and one of the nurses was infected with a virus and starts slaughtering people. It is not long before the teens realise that the horrifying events of years ago, were not just a story and the nurse is still alive!!!!

A good cast of people at the beginning of their careers. Lisa Jay and Karla Zamudio have gone on to roles in TV. Rhoda Jordan and Tiffany Shepis are established scream queens in many a low budget film.

Directed by Brad Sykes, who has come a long way from the Camp Blood films, two years previously.

This film was a winner for me and ticked all the boxes of what one would expect. Tiffany Shepis plays the monster Alexa, and this really was the highlight of the film, for me. A cross between Freddy Kruger and one of the zombies from Return of the living dead 3. This film is lively and never outstays it welcome. It delivers on the gory goods and even has one of those famous cameo's from Ron Jeremy, what more could you ask for !!!

Well I've just about seen everything now !!!!!!!
8 March 2015
Be warned this is not a horror movie. It is in fact a documentary.

James Dean Healy and Cathee Schultz are the married curators of the museum of death in Hollywood. Now, as the title implies, it is a kinda musical. In between documentary footage there is a singing undertaker and a dance group !!!

If you enter into this with the knowledge that this is a documentary (and try to ignore the musical numbers) we have a half decent documentary charting the relationship between the curators, their reasons for pursuing their venture and the challenges they face. Being closed down twice and rising from the ashes.

I did indeed find all of the documentary footage fascinating and gruesome and the basic premise of battles against adversity was solid entertainment.

I just could not get my head around the singing undertaker (oh and don't forget the singing rats). All this silliness just belittled the seriousness of the subject matter in the documentary.

DeadHouse (2005 Video)

Had the makings of a good film, but let down by poor sound quality
8 March 2015
The premise for this film is one that has been seen on numerous occasions. Hey, this is not a criticism and I really do not mind films being rehashed time and again to feed my pleasures !!!

Three teens are on vacation, they pick up a hitchhiker and the get stuck in some mud off road. They need to get help, so end up in a deserted house where a couple of serial killers reside.

OK I know you are yelling, "this sounds like the Texas chainsaw massacre, minus the chainsaw" and that would be a fair comment to make, as I did feel that it had some similarities. The main protagonist is a man in a mask (this time a clown one) and the scene is set for similar horrors. However I thought this had the potential to be quite brutal, as the situation the teens found themselves in was indeed horrific, but the horrific element was never really followed through.

There was one thing that really grated on me and that was the sound quality. When characters spoke, on a lot of occasions, you really could not hear what they were saying, so I may have missed some plot development.

Not a total waste as it did keep me entertained for the 80 minutes screen time. Good title song by The Rezmen "Song 13". Very good poster also for the DVD.

Very decent indie horror
7 March 2015
In the house of madness is an anthology film (well sort of if you consider two stories an anthology)

The wrap around story is about a couple that are struggling to sell their house and the two stories that make up this film explain the reason why. This segment stars Deanna Meske who went on to assemble quite a list of genre titles in her filmography.

The 1st story stars Donna Hamblin (Also a bit of a scream queen in the low budget genre field). She plays Tracy who finds a book on a beach via a metal detector (That has no batteries in it). It has a lock that she cannot open, try as she might. She sees a rat in her living room and kills it. Miraculously the lock springs open, but only for a limited time. So you know what's coming next !!!!!!

The 2nd story is about a girl that turns up at the house of a distant relative and persuades them to let her stay as she is down on her luck and has no where else to go. The relative reluctantly agrees, but is not happy. Izzy, the girl, has alternative motives and it is not long before she is on the phone to her boyfriend to plan to rob the place. Why does the relative always talk to the ventriloquist dummy? and why does it keep talking back? Sinister times are a happening !!!!!

All three stories are good and the acting was above par for this sort of thing. The 2nd story is the best and really kept me guessing till the twist ending.

Sessions went out for an authentic feel to the proceedings with fake scratches and grain on the film. Effects are decent and everyone seemed to be having a good time. So if you like ventriloquist films (like Anthony Hopkins Magic (1978) or the classic Dead of night (1945), then this is defiantly for you

The Tenement (2003)

Micro budget anthology film done well
6 March 2015
This is an anthology film that ain't half bad. Not keen at all on the wrap around story as it does not really go anywhere.

However, there are four stories to get your teeth into.

Story one: Fade to black, about a young lad that is obsessed by horror films. He is hen pecked by his mother, who I thought was going to be similar to Mrs Bates from psycho !!!! Meets one of his horror idols and has the opportunity to audition, but it does not go well and he is ridiculed. He takes a bloody revenge.

Story 2: The sound of silence, this is about a mute girl who is raped by her neighbour. This all ends up in a bit of a supernatural nightmare.

Story 3: Full moon rising. A typical werewolf film.

Story 4: The taxi driver. The best of the bunch with the black rose serial killer prowling the streets in his taxi. He picks up one woman and finds a kindred spirit.

I would recommend this film to all those that love zero budget films. Kept me entertained throughout. Some decent scenarios with some gore, above average for this sort of thing

Johhny Sunshine ain't no resident evil
1 March 2015
This film reminded me a bit of Residential Evil (2002), but on a low budget level. This is because the main title character, Johhny Sunshine, goes around killing zombies in sexy outfits and fetish wear. However this was more in your face and tried to be more cutting edge and controversial.

In the distant future a zombie horde has taken over the planet and survivors are walled up in cities. There is a new entertainment for people that is a cross between torture porn and snuff films. Zombies are used for entertainment, killing them is the slowest way possible. Sounds sick huh? Well in principle is should have been. Some of the set ups and situations are indeed horrible, and there is a bit of gore. However it appears to have missed an opportunity to to be truly repulsive and this is probably to do with the low budget and amateur acting on display distracting from what is happening on screen.

Shey Bland is good in the title character and she looks the part. This films sets out to be a bit different and I feel that it has achieved it's goal. Not too bad for such a low budget film and I have seen a lot worse.

Fungicide (2002 Video)

What the Fungi is going on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
28 February 2015
Fungicide is about a mad scientist who goes on a forced vacation and finds himself at a bed and breakfast. On the way in he trips and drops a vile of a potion that he has been working on. The liquid spills through the cracks of the porch and dribbles onto the Mushrooms underneath. naturally the mushrooms start to mutate into Killer mushrooms.

Shot on a seriously low budget and with actors that are obviously armatures. This really is a very silly film. The mushrooms range from CGI to people dressed as mushrooms (full size) along with hand puppet mushrooms.

There is some gore on display, but some of the effects are weird, to say the least. In one attack sequence the victim looks like one of those masks you used to make at school, by blowing up a balloon and then sticking paper masc-he over it until it drys, bursting the balloon, leaving you with a mask the shape of a balloon. Yes it looks that fake!!!!

Lots of CGI is used for moving mushrooms, blood splatter's and gunshots. None of it that good, but there was an element of cheesy fun because of the CGI.

Overall I would say that the film does not take itself too seriously and there is some degree of entertainment value. Supposed to be a horror comedy, but I did not find this funny in any way. For me it was let down by the poor sound quality, which meant there was many times I could not hear the lines the actors were speaking.

Divine Intervention (II) (2007)

Low budget indie horror
24 February 2015
A man calls himself Father Reynolds, he dresses like a monk from days past and arms himself with a crossbow and works for God to cleanse the Earth of sinners. The local teens don't stand a chance as they are fornicating, foul mouthed, drug takers. This film focuses on a group of teens fighting for survival.

Not a bad effort, but nothing really made it stand out from the crowd. Vic Clay plays the lead character and he is fine. Some of the teens are irritating, but get the job done.

There is one character, Mrs Donovan, who is clearly seen in an early scene. From that moment on, in every scene she is in, you never see her face. She is either talking off camera or her hair is over her face or an object obstructs the camera view. Was this a touch of the ED Wood's and the actress knew what she had let herself in for and decided to walk early on !!!!!! You decide.

Not scary, but does have some gore, mainly of the crossbow variety.

Not really much else to say about this one

Hell's Highway (2002 Video)

Excellent low budget indie that delivers in bucket loads
24 February 2015
Hell's highway is about a group of four teens on a road trip. On their travels they pick up a hitchhiker called Lucinda. After a short while she says she is going to kill them all, just like their friends before (who had set off on the same road trip). They expel her from the car forthwith, but have they seen the last of her? It also appears that many have met an untimely fate on the Devil's highway, judging by all of the crosses on the side of the road.

Directed by Jeff Leroy, who is still making horror today. Joe Castro, also a familiar name for practical special effects, in low budget films provides some excellent work here.

Excellent cast that include. Phoebe Dollar and Beverly Lynn, both well established scream queens on the indie circuit, and with a cameo by porn legend Ron Jeremy, who is suitably killed with tongue firmly in cheek.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It had a good story, acting was good. Kept my attention throughout. Some of the special effects were excellent and really delivered on the gore groceries. Nothing is quite what it seems and this will keep you guessing to the bitter end.

Great little homage to the original Texas chainsaw massacre as Phoebe wields a chainsaw like Gunner Hanson.

I would wholly recommend this film to all gore hounds and those that like low budget horrors.

Demon Slaughter (2003 Video)
3/10
More low budget zombie horror with a side order of gangster's.
22 February 2015
This movie starts out like a gangster film and the horror elements only kick in midway through. Jimmy is a ruthless gangster, who will even kill innocents to cover his tracks. He has promised his wife that he will only deal with the mob one more time. He has a plan to make off with a fortune of their money and start a fresh life for himself and his wife. Things don't seem to go to plan.

It seems to take a bit of an age to get going, with very few horror elements. At the half way point things change and the horror comes thick and fast. Zombies invade the screen. I found the effects of the shoot outs pretty annoying as this is achieved with CGI shots coming from the ends of the guns. There is a fair bit of gore by the end and some of this was quite well handled. I did find one of the CGI effects quite good. Music is mostly of the rock variety so this suited me down to the ground.

Story made an attempt to be original and it kept me guessing to the end. Acting is OK for this type of production. Never really outstays it's welcome. The running time is 1 hr and 2 minutes. Less than an hour if you do not count the end credits.

Death from Beyond 2 (2008 Video)
2/10
James Panetta has a hand in every department, so we all know where to point the finger.
22 February 2015
Death from beyond 2: Eternal damnation is the follow up to the 2006 Death from beyond. I have seen this also, but could not tell you anything about that effort as it is a long distant memory.

I would like to tell you what this film was about, but I am struggling as I really could not follow the plot. Maybe this was due to the length of time from viewing the 1st one to this? Something about people being reincarnated time and again and battling the same adversaries and demons.

James Panetta did everything on this film from direct, act, edit, costume design etc. There is some gore, some of which is CGI. Talking of the CGI, there are copious amounts of it on show here. To the extent that characters wander through whole sets of CGI environments. Some of the scenery is made up of curtains hanging from walls and that's it. Some of the CGI environments did give this a bit of an odd quality and some of the special effects were OK for such a small budget. Note I said some (not all as most are abysmal). One of the people gets hanged and the rope used was far from taut!!! Just gives you an impression of the rest of the film really.

I did like some of the music used.

On the strength of this I will not be revisiting the 1st one, even to find out what the hell is going on.

Body Shop (2008)
7/10
Old school slasher that delivers in all departments.
22 February 2015
Art runs a body shop for fixing cars. He is a religious man who, whilst transporting his family to church, is run off the road by some drunk teens. His wife is killed and his daughter survives but is left in a coma. Two years after this event, he cares for his daughter at home. He is joined by her old boyfriend, Billy- Bob , who is passing through on the way to a job that he starts in a couple of months. He asks Art for a temporary job, and he is happy to oblige. It is not long before the three teens from two years ago show up and a deadly revenge is exacted.

There is more to the story than the above summary, but I really do not want to give away too much information. This film reminded me of the 80's slasher Don't go in the house (1980), but not quite as sick and twisted as that old video nasty. This was made in 2002, but would have fitted nicely into the glory/gory heyday of late 70's/early 80's slashers. It follows all of the conventions and I, for one, loved it for it.

Directed by Donald Farmer who has an impressive history in exploitation films, still going today. Starring some familiar faces to exploitation films, William Smith (needs no introduction here). Tina Klause and Rachel Robbins. (Both of who are well established scream queens, still going strong today).

Good story, decent acting, decent gore, some neat twists and turns that I did not expect and the usual slasher implausible situation made up for an excellent package that entertained me thoroughly.

Highly recommended. AKA Body shop.

Skeleton Key (2006 Video)
2/10
A very odd film. Is it a horror, a comedy, but wait there is a song too so is it a musical !!!!!
21 February 2015
A reporter sets out to find a five legged, two headed goat and arrives in the town of Nilbog. The town is infested with all manner of monsters. From Zombies through to Vampires.

Joh Johnson has quite an an impressive IMDb list of credits and to be continually working is a commendable thing.

I feel a bit guilty about not really liking this film. Judging by the reviews on here you really either love it or hate it. I would not go as far as saying I hated this. I just found it a bit juvenile and some of the characters really grated on me.

The concept is cool and starts off with a man watching the film in his bathroom. It then jumps back to him on numerous occasions and he passes comments on the action unfolding. Now if he had spoken in a normal voice (or really any other voice than the one used) this would have been fine, but he speaks his lines in a high pitched sequel. This seems to be a problem with a lot of the characters through out the film. There is also the Asian man who does not speak English, and he really just sounds like he is talking gibberish. Apparently the script was totally improvised.

Some of the physical special effects were good, but this was counterbalanced by some poor visual effects.

Acting generally was poor. There are appearances from Debbie Rochon and Brinkie Stevens, two well established scream queens. They are only briefly seen and Debbie has a slightly bigger part than Brinkie, who only really has a cameo.

The best thing about this was the music and there was a rock track that sounded very much like the Phantasm main title. Cool !!

Not a total waste as there were the odd scene that made me smile and keep my attention. Especially the Grease homage when the lead actor started to sing to a girl called Sandy!!!!!

There is even a couple of sequel's. Skeleton key 2: 667 the neighbour of the beast in 2008 and Skeleton key 3: The organ trail, made in 2011. So their must be a fan base out there somewhere.

Sick Bastard (2007 Video)

Proof that the British can make low budget schlock too.
17 February 2015
Jason Impey has an absolute bucketful of credits from 2000 through to present day. I must admit I do not think that I have seen any of his other films. On the strength of this I would not be totally adverse to watching another one.

Jason Impey really had a hand in almost every department of this film. Shot in the UK, which automatically endeared this to me. This is about a mad cannibalistic person who escapes an asylum and goes on a murderous killing spree. Well that's about it really. No real motive or character development. All we get is some gore that I did find quite effective. I also found one scene to be quite laugh out loud, where the lumbering madman attacks a martial artist and managed to get the better of him !!!!!

Don't really get to see many UK no budget efforts, so nice to find this obscurity.

Overall not a great film and the running time of one hour and nine minutes means that it does not outstay it's welcome.

A hybrid of Michele Soavi Demons (1985) & David Cronenberg's Rabid (1977)
15 February 2015
Directed by Richard Griffin who has a prolific career in the low budget indie circuit that spans fifteen years.

Raving Maniacs is about four Goth teens, who attend the biggest party of the year, the "Rave from the Grave" Hence part of the title (Raving), get it? They nearly knock over a man who has a supply of a new drug, that is fluorescent green, and they have no qualms in taking the drug ASAP. Little do they know that the drug will have deadly side effects.

As my summary (above) states, this did remind me a lot of Demons (1985) and Rabid (1977). Firstly, the film is set in a night club, that looks very much like a theatre and some of the lighting of the demons walking around reminded me of that (lit from behind in silhouette). Then there is the concept of people being possessed and becoming sexual deviants, hence the Rabid reference.

I enjoyed this feature and thought it to be a commendable effort on a low budget. Character development was good and we got to know the teens before they were placed in peril. Sound was good and all dialogue was audible. Effects were good and some quite gory.

All in all gets a thumbs up from me.

Night (2006 Video)
4/10
A+ for effort and entertainment value
15 February 2015
There seems to be a backlash against us "stuffy Brits" and our abilities to enjoy low budget films. Well let me put the record straight, here and now. I am British and I enjoyed this flick !!!!

Night is about two cops who foil an attempted robbery at a store. An innocent bystander is shot. Only thing is she does not die. Mike, one of the cops attempts to find the woman as he really can't understand how she survived. He soon realises that she is head of a vampire clan and he is soon welcomed into their fold. His police partner, Jimi, can't understand why he has gone missing and sets out to find him.

Yes it's low budget but it really made an effort to entertain. There is lots of action and everyone involved seem to enter into the spirit of the thing. I found some of the camera angles interesting and the general mood of the piece was good. Most low/no budget films have endless talking due to not having any budget to stage action scenes. At least this tries to provide entertainment rather than long speeches. A good coherent story as well. Music is also very good Techo/Rock. Only thing I did not like was the over dubbing of the voices, as this was very obvious due to the words not really matching what was being said on the screen. Having said this I would rather this than not being able to hear the words at all, which is a common fault in low budget films.

Stiff Odds (2004 Video)

What were the odds of this being any good..? Slim to none !!!!
15 February 2015
I am ploughing through the Catacomb of Creepshow 50 movie box set and it is films like this that are making me feel that this is a torturous slog.

Two Goth teens are chased by three resurrected dead people killed by a gang of thugs. The Grim Reaper runs a bookies on the odds of who will die next.

Acting is awful, special effects are bad. There is one scene that is made up of live action animation, why?

I watched this @ 11 am on a Sunday morning and felt my eyelids getting heavier and heavier by the minute, even though I had a good nights sleep. Boring for the most part and then in the last twenty minutes there is a sizable amount of gore, but really it was little too late for me.

Some decent music though.

Sorry I just did not get the point.
15 February 2015
Bill Zebub is a prolific film maker in the low budget school of filming. I have seen other films of his before and remember being pleasantly surprised by them.

This appears to be a departure for him from the ones that I have seen and is a "no topic too taboo" comedy.

Bill plays the main character who hires a stripper for his birthday and falls in love with her. That's about it really. There are other characters that pop in and out of the film, but I really did not follow the plot that well.

I feel that this sets out to achieve it's intentions by really being quite objectionable in it's subject mater. There is a "black" character played by a white man in blacked out face, the police officers are SS gestapo and there is a religious man who is sexually abusing his three daughters. So as you can see, not for those easily offended. I kinda get the religious man and police officer as (I think) it makes the point of (some) religious people being morally corrupt and preaching to everyone else how they should be leading their lives. Heck in the UK it is a frequent part of the news that a man of the cloth has been jailed for child abuse. I also get the Police thing (Fascists). Unfortunately I did struggle with the ethnic character and did find this not to my liking at all.

So if Bill set out to offend he achieved his aim. If he set out to make a comedy, then I, personally, did not find much to laugh at in this film.
