Ink (I) (2009)
7/10

Ink oozes ambition, creativity and authenticity. It's a pretty simple movie told with originality and various thematic elements. However, a few things hold it back from standing out even more.

Number one and the most annoying of them all is the camera-work and editing. There are so many camera shots in each scene that it gets quite irritating. Even a 30 word dialogue between 2 people has over 20 different shots. The fighting scenes also suffer from the same issue and also the shaky-cam syndrome

Number two, the pacing. This is probably my opinion and despite of listing various thematic elements as an advantage, i believe that there are a few too many for a 100 min. film. The movie feels like a race, like 'Crank' but with an elegant story. I don't think that works very well. There are many subtleties that just pass by so fast. Maybe the fast camera-work is the cause of that too.

Number three. The two minutes explanation of the events of the movie. I think that it should be more subtle and shouldn't have tried to explain everything. It wasn't that hard to figure out the meaning yourself but instead you get the explanation served. It makes you feel like an idiot. You were subtle thus far, why try to explain it in the end. Clockwork orange or Blade runner didn't and that's why there are so highly regarded among other things.

All in all, the film is entertaining, ambitious and quite original. All movies have a few cons but these felt quite important so Ink gets a solid 7/10. Looking forward for more projects from Jamin Winans.
