Becoming (II) (2020)

Excellent in every way! What a woman.
6 May 2020
This is going to receive divided opinion mostly from the MAGA hat wearing Trump fan club, for this to have received 3.1 for only 7 reviews so far is evidence that we will get a skewed result.

That said, there is absolutely no denying that Michelle deserves accolades for her achievements, she has been the role model for women in this world we all needed.

She IS an incredible woman and would have made an exceptional running mate for Biden in the upcoming elections.

She is proof that there could be a female President.

British Humour - avoid if American
23 April 2020
I write this as a Brit, having watched comedies and satire that have defined American series, I often regard the Americans to have only stolen a small percentage of our humour.

As such, I am not entirely sure the Americans amongst the watching audience will entirely 'get' the humour but that's okay, they can admire the quaintness of it and the girls can admire Sam Claflin.

The humour is very deadpan and subtle, no slipping on bananas skins for the yanks to be seen here for their kicks.

Lovely film with stunning locations and solid actors making the most of the script as it is. Some very funny scripted moments and actually some very awkward ones too.

Good watch for a weekday evening and good to watch on a 4K TV if you have one that is big enough.

That Welsh bloke from GOT
13 March 2020
Just tried to be open minded about this film but that Welsh boy from GOT who is just painful, really didn't make this any better.

Forget his wooden approach, but he just doesn't convey well to be honest. The rest of the casting was also average but I suspect mostly due to bad script writing.

Okay if you have low standards for a film gone to DVD type vibe and if you like watching ex-GOT cast trying to scrape a living.

Could be worse could be better. Just so so.

Beautiful, engaging, like nothing else you've ever seen!
22 February 2019
I went into this without really knowing much about it, I wanted to be surprised. The IMDb rating was more decent than similar films that had bombed in the last few years.

The film has a feel of the Matrix in terms of plot line, and of course with subtle references to Pinnochio with the Doctor/Alita relationship.

I watched this in IMAX which really has to be the only way to watch it. In terms of VFX and visual spector, this film is just outstanding.

Some films have the ability to stay with you long after you have watched it and I'd say this is one of them, very rarely does a films run time just zip by in a second, I didn't want this to end.

I'd put this up there with one of the best sci-fi I have ever seen.

Very poor movie not made better by second rate actor Iwan!
9 June 2018
The movie looks to be a shocking film from the outset. Unfortunately it doesn't surprise anyone, and continues to be disappointing. Iwan is clearly trying the "life after GOT" approach. But he just doesn't convince. His stock acting style in GOT and other series was the "surprised wide eyed menacing look" and the "quiet lad who says nothing look" which feature here quite often. So his complete lack of acting diversity sadly shines through. He had moments of promise in GOT but the movie industry is savage, so I'm not confident about seeing him in much beside this sort of thing. Anyway, woeful movie and just badly written, maybe that was the problem. Character development flawed.

The Boat That Rocked - Non-Stop Fun & Classic Curtis!!!!
24 March 2009
I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation to the world premiere at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. This is probably the biggest UK film of 2008 and the atmosphere was electric with a huge rec carpet reception and great theming.

The film itself was fantastic fun and was a non-stop ride of great music and quirky and effective comedy quips. Some may fail to see what Curtis was aiming to achieve in this film and put some of the more surreal moments and scenes down to far-fetched script writing and direction. However, the film never takes itself to seriously and while it does go on a bit longer than it should, it simply allows you to enjoy the funny characters for that little bit longer.

How does the film come across? Well this is quite easy for me. Anyone who enjoyed Empire Records (the soundtrack is simply amazing) and the quiet genius of such dead pan English comedy as Curtis's past successes will enjoy this adventure very much. And in essence, this is exactly what the film is, is an adventure with some scandalous, naughty, human and wild people. While watching this film, I really related to its emotive origins of the freedom and novelty of the world of music and its effect on the world.

Quite simply, if you like a great soundtrack, some very entertaining humour from some great actors and a colourful feast of hedonism and debauchery then this is for you.

I will give this film 8 out of 10 as I believe it celebrates in a very colourful fashion, an era that has long been due a fantastical perspective to really lift it out of history and into the eyes and ears of audiences across the UK. This is a film that the British people can be very proud of and one that I think will entertain audiences for years to come. A comedy classic for sure.
