Purple Hearts (2022)
Could have been good
It could have been good if the script had not been poisoned by a holier than thou female character who believes she's better than anyone else and who casts judgements on others without knowing their experience. I've learnt not to dislike a movie because of the flaws of a character but Cassie is presented as a fearless and "socially aware" woman who's able to judge people in 5 seconds but who's unable to question her own questionable actions. We are supposed to like her. Her actions are supposed to make her likable... but she's not. I'm not even irritated by the SJW remarks - most are actually relevant within the context of the film. The problem is that this movie is a vehicle for a one dimensional female character who writes and sings songs (because that allows her to sing a dozen of boring and mundane songs throughout the film even if this adds nothing to the story or to her character... but yeah... that adds 15 mn), and who is shown as strong, fearless....but also totally unlikable. She's unpleasant, entitled, moody, demanding but we're supposed to like her because she "struggles". The other characters are not particularly fleshed out but at least they make sense. The story is totally predictable so I spent my time rolling my eyes and watching my watch (not easy to do), waiting for this to be over.
I'm tired of these badly written shallow characters that we see in most cheap TV shows and movies. I could have given this film 5 or 6 stars but the combo "I'm a strong independent woman with strong opinions" + "nasally sung tracks" was too much.
Queer as Folk (2022)
Too much of nothing
The intention is probably noble: checking all the boxes of the LGBTQ+ community and including as much diversity as possible but the result is soulless. It's obvious that the main motivation is inclusion but the problem is that it shows so there's nothing organic and real about these characters that speak and act like stereotypes or even caricatures of themselves. Their interactions don't make sense, their reactions don't make sense. They're neither interesting nor likable. And characters don't need to be friendly or nice to be likable, they just need to be fleshed out and well written. It's interesting to see flawed people leading their lives even if they can be annoying. But in Queer As Folk 2022, there are only self-centered, narcissistic and empty characters who just go through life without any direction.
I don't know who this show if for. I don't feel very concerned but I didn't feel very concerned by the original versions either - yet I liked the characters despite their flaws and how they interacted. It was a natural group of people with their ups and downs. In this version, I still don't understand why they still see each other. It's like they have to meet every episode because otherwise, there would be no show. There's sex but it's not sexy. Their sex lives are sad. Maybe it's a writer's choice to show the emptiness of their characters lives.
The main character is annoying. The problem is that he could be charming, funny or interesting. But no, he's just annoying. The other characters are cardboard. Only Julian, his brother, is interesting. Basically this show looks like it was written by producers who used an Excel file with all the letters of the LGBTQ+++ acronym but who considered the realness, the substance and the likability of their characters as an afterthought.
RuPaul's Drag Race: Catwalk (2022)
How many finalists?
First there were 12-13 episodes per season and 3 finalists; then there 14 episodes and 4 finalists; now there are 16 episodes and 5 finalists. I guess that by season 28, there will be 43 episodes, 14 contestants and 13 finalists (one queen will be eliminated in episode 2, then asked to come back in episode 28 and will leave again in episode 31 because of an injury 🙄).
I think the producers are lost. They know that the viewers know how they edit episodes, create fake storylines, twist plots and favor some contestants over some others. So they don't know what to do anymore. I like all the finalists but how this is ending doesn't make much sense, especially if the Lipsync For Your Life is the only way to crown a winner, regardless of their achievements during the season. It was great in season 9 but since then, the process has been forced, it's wig reveal over wig reveal, 4 costumes in 1, etc... Last season lipsyncs in the finale were "meh" and some of the best contestants were eliminated too early. I don't know what they plan to do this season but I'm not very excited. I expect a Rigor Morris unfortunately.
RuPaul's Drag Race: She's a Super Tease (2022)
RPDR Meta-Inception
Whatever you can think of the recent evolution of production in RPDR, you can acknowledge with this episode that the writers were able to play with their own references and make something funny in this episode. The objective was for 2 teams to play in mini-scenes for a caricature of RPDR trailers and they managed to create funny stuff. I must admit that a large majority of acting challenges are quite bad in this show: the themes submitted to the contestants don't provide funny material and even the best actors couldn't make them entertaining. But by proposing to self-reference the show, the producers expected the queens to create stuff based on their in depth knowledge of the series and use what has become cultural references to transform it into good scenes. Kudos to the producers and the editors for being able to acknowledge their usual real TV tricks and let the queens play with scenes from past seasons.
The RPDR franchise is an overproduced TV show with a lot of contradictions: the show promotes love and acceptance, yet it puts the contestants in uncomfortable situations with some shady edits; some members of the fan base are quite toxic and take everything they watch as the "truth", harassing queens on line. So it's very hard to take RuPaul and World of Wonder seriously when they preach about "everybody says love". This episode doesn't really address this issue but at least, it shows that the producers are aware of the reality TV shticks they use over and over. And they let the queens have fun with these tropes (cat fights, tearful confessions, stupid challenges, childhood trauma, etc.).
It was funny. And most of what is supposed to be funny in RPDR (acting challenges, Snatch Game,...) is rarely funny. So just for that, it's an outstanding episode.
The 2nd (2020)
Ryan Philippe looks younger than his son
.... and that's not the worst part. The film is just so lazy with a basic plot, poor lines of dialogues and no production values. I watched it because I like Casper Van Dien and Ryan Philippe but I can't imagine what it must have felt for these two actors with decent careers, to be involved in such a poor project. Sometimes an actor realizes only during or after the shooting that the film he made is a turkey. I just hope they got good money.
RuPaul's Drag Race: Corona Can't Keep a Good Queen Down (2021)
Great "Behind the Scenes" episode
I don't know why this episode is rated so low. I found it very refreshing to see the process of the production and how the queens got prepared. The pandemic plays a major part in this documentary yet it also shows how the contestants try to find the best ways to get through during the process of being selected to RPDR. It's nice to go away from the manufactured drama and watch the queens talk as normal people about their experiences.
Can't people wait for 2 weeks until the next episode, even if the next episode is Snatch Game (which is a way overrated episodes throughout all seasons anyway)?
I watched this episode like the deleted scenes you can see on YouTube where queens talk about their lives as performers and the specificities of their art depending on where they come from or what references they have.
I don't know what the community of fans expect today but if the rate of this episode reflects their expectations, I'm not surprised that the producers continue to "spice up" fake drama to keep their audience "entertained" at the expense of interesting discussions between the contestants.
