The Evading (2007)
You'll Watch This With The Lights On!
So You Can Read During The Slow Parts! I gave this film a 2 because I liked the audio work and a couple of the FX. Indeed, the whole look of the film showed some care. Now, if only they had rewritten the script and gotten better performances out of the actors. I say two these things because the script sounded like a first draft and the dialogue was so inane and repetitive that I honestly couldn't tell if the actors had any chops. Visually, there was enough there for a decent hour had a good editor been given free reign to cut, cut, cut. I think this was a case where a highly experienced producer might have pulled it all together. I just can't recommend this film except to die hard horror completists.
The Traveler (2006)
Shockingly Inept
Well, I give it a 2 for the gore, but otherwise this film is worthless. Heck, I just went back and gave it a 1. With this movie I have finally decided I'm too old to finish movies that start off as poorly as this clunker. SPOILER: For 10 minutes an uninteresting couple with nothing much to say drives around lost in the country. This bit has to be seen to be believed. Were they all on 'ludes when they edited this section? I saw this movie for free and I still paid too much. That silly movie about the giant walking turd monster was like Citizen Kane compared to this bowel movement. Your life will be better if you skip this puppy. Your entertainment dollar would be better spent on gas to go driving around running over stray dogs while dressed as Edna Turnblatt.
Diabolik (1968)
The epitome of 60s filmic pulp fiction
Note the votes for Diabolik, concentrated at both ends of the scale. Count me in the 10 contingent. Like the music of the Who, Diabolik evokes my teenage years and the swinging Euro scene of which I so much wanted to be a part. Roger Ebert called it when he said Diabolik is the film Barbarella should have been. Sure, the blue screen work is cheesy and the gun shots tinny, but this movie still drips style like few other flicks. And it moves. There's no filler. Every measly dollar (lira) they gave Mario Bava to work with is on the screen. Get Diabolik. Watch it. Watch it again. Then get it and change your vote, low-enders. Diabolik is the film of a generation, possibly the best representation of the 60s zeitgeist on celluloid.
Murder by Decree (1979)
The Pop
I first saw Murder By Decree during its original theatrical run and have never forgotten the scene with the pea. Yeah, Lawrence Olivier (Bob Clark's first choice) would probably have been a terrific Watson but he never could have played the pea scene as did James Mason. It's a great entertainment, dripping in gaslit fog. See it.
Holmes: (I'm) only the Prince of Detectives? Then who is the King?
Watson: Lestrade.
And then they laugh. Amazing stuff.
My only complaint with the Anchor Bay DVD is the audio. I've got a pretty decent 7.1 set-up here and audio is critical for me. I really wish they'd do a remixed version. For this one I'd double dip.
