Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Great Christmas Movie for the family
This is the perfect Christmas movie for the whole family to enjoy. Most of us have lost a significant somebody in our lives, and wished everything was back to normal again. Expect what's normal is that we do lose somebody, and that reality is painful, but somehow we all must learn to move on. We all grieve, but we all must find joy and happiness someway, somehow.
Very beautiful movie.
Joker (2019)
a great movie for a super villain.
Let's not forget who mr. j is, he is first and foremost a super villain. And super villains need to have an awesome backstory. This is exactly what the movie aced.
The great thing about this movie is that it doesn't CGI itself to death (ahem marvel), that's to say this is a very grounded film, and if not for the title and subject matter this could stand as a great drama/thriller.
Magkaibigan (2008)
Nice, straight forward honest to goodness film about friendship
As someone who barely watches Filipino/tagalog films this one took me by surprise. This movie is a simple, honest to goodness depiction of friendship. The way this was portrayed is so genuine and the various interaction between the characters so spot-on it felt like I was watching real life.
The characters are genuine, and the story (even though the ending was a "dead' give-away due to narrator) wisely centered around the ordinary lives of the main characters.
No fancy stuff here, just a feel good reality movie. Estrada was a revelation and makes me watch his other movies. De Leon, although already a pillar of Philippine television and movie scene, is unfamiliar to me but now I totally understand all the critical acclaim.
Maricel and Zuelta also give authentic performances. The other "kumpares" are also well played although I wish they had more movie time. The only regrettable performances came from the sons although teenagers really are wooden in real life as well. The daughter was good though, and explains why she's still around in the entertainment scene.
Was rather surprised this was dedicated to Rudy Fernandez, was this movie based on his friendship with somebody? The director perhaps? Or one of the stars? All in all a pleasant surprise, and I would watch this again in totality as I wasn't able to catch the first 20 minutes of the movie. I actually stopped my studies because I was so gripped by the performances of de Leon and Estrada, and I had to write this review.
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
I could not believe it..
I saw this movie recently and with all the high praises (and Oscars) that its gotten i was really very excited to see this film, especially since i'm a boxing fan. However, by the end of the movie i was wondering if i saw the same movie everyone was talking about. To be honest i was disappointed with it. For a casual fan the boxing aspects of the movie might be okay but for a boxing aficionado they are not.. There are things happening (esp. inside the ring) on the movie that are simply unbelievable, you might even say its out of the world, and for that its just hard to love this movie. Now i'm sure people will point out that this is not a movie about boxing; this is a movie about People, about Relationships, and i get that. The thing is boxing is what holds the movie together, from the principal characters to the main scenes, and i just wish it was done better and realistically. PS I can't believe this won the Oscars for the best picture.
