The Boys (2019)
Shocking becomes disgusting
Another one bites the dust. I'll keep my previously given rating of 9 for the sake of the first 3 seasons, but i'll always remember episode 2 of season 4 as the one that made me stop watching this series, as much as I used to like it. Previous three seasons were awesome, clever, funny, bold, entertaining, shocking. All that was replaced by boring, disturbing and most of all, disgusting. Ep. 1 was already much below my expectations but I decided to carry on and give it a chance to redeem itself, but far from it. It only got worse in ep. 2. Whoever watches this episode will probably guess at which particular scene I just had to turn it off because of how unnecessarily disgusting it was. Final note to the producers: there is a fine line between shocking and disgusting and you just crossed it.

Ripley (2024)
Mesmerizing! 5/5
I was skeptical about this one at first, thinking it might just be another artsy-fartsy attempt to achieve false deepeness with technical gimmicks like shooting in black&white.... But I decided to give it a chance! And oh boy, how greateful I am! Way beyond my expectations in every possible aspect and as close to perfection as one can get. Technically superb, with out of this world cinematography and sound editing. Acting is masterful, storytelling and directing is genius.
And next, the points about which many people complain:
Yes, it's slow, but it's meant to be and slow can be good when done right. You can actually feel the struggle of certain character in certain scene and situation, you start to feel like you are in their skin and wonder what would you do different if you where? And that is 101 on how to get your audience to emphasize with an antihero.
Yes, no rich tehnicolor midcentury Italy. I personally visited every part of Italy where the action takes place including the magical Atrani, and yes, they are all very beautiful and colourful. But you are not watching Ripley to get lost in the scenery. You are watching to get lost in the story, in the characters. That beeing said, as mentioned above, it is still majestic to look at, every frame is a work of art and each carry a meaning. Some of the stills, worthy of the most pretentious photography exhibition!
A must watch in my books!
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Bro, this ain't good
As many other reviewers stated, the movie is quite a letdown in terms of story, but it doesn't really succeed on other aspects either. Visually is fine, but that we already expected, since the first Avatar offered us already everything this one does, so it doesn't really surprises the viewer anymore, let alone blow their mind like the first one did. Even on the big screen, in 3D, it simply doesn't have the "wow" factor.
Other (negative) aspects:
Large parts of the movie feel a like a documentary, which would be fine...if I wanted to watch David Attenborough: Another Blue Planet, but that's not what I wanted
The action parts are not emotional enough, the fight I ended up caring the most about, was between a "whale" and a crew of fishermen. That says a lot about the rest of the clashes between main characters.
Speaking of characters, the ones we cared about in the first installment have less screen time and overall weight in the movie
Very basic dialogue, overly simplistic lines, no memorable quotes, overuse of that annoying "bro" appellative
Conclusion: Nothing really worked as it should have, full of flaws on most aspects, the pretty visuals just not enough to save the rest...
House of the Dragon (2022)
Just not good
After 6 episodes, I lost any hope. This show is just not going anywhere nor is getting any better. The plot is boring. It feels more like Downtown Abbey in a fantasy setting/world rather than GOT, but without the likeable and interesting characters. And this is the even bigger issue: the uninteresting flat characters that come and go (die) without giving us the chance to get attached or care whatsoever about any of them. We don't care about birth or death because there is simply no build-up to any of them. And last but not least, the dragons (Title character!!!!) are just a filler, beeing there only because they have to. They take no real part in the story, they have no part in the plot, they are the same as any other "character": no personality, we just don't care about them. In GOT I almost cried when one the dragons was hurt and was in shock when it was brought down from the sky. If a dragon dies in HOTD, I couldn't care les...
Overall, very poor effort...
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
This is where all roads led!!
Although I was checking the score on a few sites, I have not yet read any reviews or comments on Avengers: IW, so this opinion is based solely on my experience earlier today. This movie is up there with the best fantasy epics of my adolescence, or with some of the greatest comic book/superhero movies of more recent years. It's huge. It's epic. It's amazing. It's a damn well orchestrated symphony. It's Beethoven's 9th. For me, it doesn't get any better. But...unfortunately, not everyone will think that, or have the same experience. Why? Because it can't be considered a standalone movie and it can't be enjoyed as one. It is the top of the pyramid but you can't just land on it, you have to climb the whole pyramid first. It's a cinematic orgasm, but you have to go through the sex to get to it. It requires previous MCU knowledge, without it is just like watching the Superbowl with no understanding of the game. Many scenes, dialogues, lines, actions and choices of certain characters...won't work without it and will have less to no emotional impact on the viewer. So yes, for Marvel vets is the (first half of a) Champions League Final of all Marvel movies, for others is just an explosive game with perhaps to many players on the field. In Spidey's words: Sorry, I can't remember all your names..."
Well I can, and I will never forget any of them...
Before the Flood (2016)
Leonardo's take on global warming does not disappoint!
Simply put, this is amazing. This is, in every aspect, one of the most astonishing pieces of documentary-film making I have seen in a long time. This is much more than a commentary on climate-change. And Leonardo di Caprio has just surpassed his Oscar-winning celebrity/actor status, becoming an example and a role-model. This is real. This is big. He is given a job and takes it seriously. From meeting flood-stricken farmers in India and endangered baby orangutans in Indonesia, all the way to meeting the world's most powerful people, political and spiritual leaders, he really does it all. He travels the world, literally from pole to pole, creating an unprecedented exposure over an imminent problem. In his words, his footstep might be bigger than most people's, but it makes us wonder, are WE doing enough? Are WE doing our part? We might be just a drop in an ocean, but what is an ocean but a multitude of drops? Highly recommended, a must watch, well worth your time!
