A list with huge diversity. These are movies too "sophisticated"/ artsy, weird and bizzare to be included in conventional horror lists. Some of them are not even scary, relying more on their creepy/eerie atmosphere. There are also some fantasy/horror movies, a subgenre that is not a great fit with the rest of the movies but still it's better to put them here rather than a conventional/traditional horror list. A supernatural element in most of them, but not all of them. An art horror movie and a psychological drama horror movie are not the same thing, but plenty of them cover mostly the same ground.

Reviews
Il tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave (1972)
6.1/10. Watchable but not recommended.
I have watched a lot of 70's horror/mystery movies recently. I liked almost all of them, i was pleased, movies of this era won't scare you but they are enjoyable at worst.
I wish i could say the same about this. But i can't. First part was interesting, i liked the script, actors were good. Unfortunately, as it unfolded, it became somewhat dumb and uninteresting. I was not expecting something great but still, i was disappointed. Edwige Fenech is a feast for the eyes, i can't say it was boring but overall, it was more like a parody at some point and then. Final twist was unexpecting but still, it didn't make much sense and the way it was presented, it was laughable. The "accident" scene a few minutes before the ending was unintentionally hilarious.
I don't regret i watched it but i can't recommend it. I knew it wouldn't scare me but i was hoping for this to be a fun ride, at least. I t wasn't.
Cold Ground (2017)
6/10. Watchable but not recommended.
I have a soft spot for Found Footage movies. In general, i tend to overrate them. COLD GROUND starts well, there is a fine introduction, viewers get to know about the two leading characters and i found the whole story somewhat original. As it progressed, i was invested, acting was good, story was not very interesting but it's a horror movie, my expectations were low either way.
Unfortunately, the last 20 minutes were not good, i could say that it's getting dumber. I stopped caring about the characters, pace was not good instead of things got speed up. The whole cave segment was not a bad idea and it could make this movie better, however the writers didn't exploit this idea that good. So, ending was a dissapointment. Still, there are some positives here and if you are a big fan of FF movies, you might enjoy it. I am a big fan, but i didn't.
The Medusa Touch (1978)
7.2/10. Recommended.
I could barely call it a "Forgotten/underrated gem", nevertheless it's not that far. This is a good mystery movie with supernatural elements. Burton was excellent, so were Ventura and Remick. It was almost exciting and it was so interesting that it made me invest. I was constantly curious where it goes, there were some twists and turns here and there, not something mindblowing though. If i should mention its biggest quality, i would suggest movie's originality and creativity (Probably an influence for Shyamalan's UNBREAKABLE?). I am not saying it's perfect, of course it's a bit outdated and don't expect to get scared. Beauty of this movie relies upon its creepy/eerie atmosphere and Burton's tenseness.
I recommend it but beware, this is not a horror movie. And keep in mind this is a 1978 movie and it shows. Still, i enjoyed the hell out of it.
Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)
6.5/10. Borderline recommendable.
This is a good movie and i should probably rated it higher. It's ahead of its time with the mockumentary stuff, it's a successful satire with good acting performances etc, BUT it's more clever than enjoyable if you catch my drift. I mean, i didn't laugh even once even though i can't say it isn't funny. Of course this is not a pure comedy movie, so don't expect hilarious scenes etc. This is something like a dark comedy/satire but unfortunately it's not so dark neither intense nor funny enough. It's like watching clever people saying clever things but you already know everything they are gonna say, so you hear them more like out of politeness. It was not boring but it was not that interesting either. Still i am glad i watched it. Always a pleasure watching Dunst/Adams/Barkin/Alley and Brittany Murphy (R. I. P)
L'armata Brancaleone (1966)
7.3/10. Recommended.
It's getting better by the minute. To be honest, during the first 20-ish minutes, i was thinking this is barely watchable. However, it grows on you. Situations are becoming funnier, acting performances as well. Second part is hilarious, i was laughing a lot just by watching Gassman speaking. By the way, Gassman was astonishing, his performance seemed a bit outdated to me at first but then, he won me over. Definitely i am gonna watch other movies of his.
I am Greek but i didn't even mind when he mocked the Byzantine origin of Volonte's character, that's how great this comedy is. BRANCALEONE is a pure comedy movie, don't expect a swashbuckling/action adventure movie. And it is a success.
Jam (2023)
7.1/10. Recommended.
This is the third Korean movie in a row i watch which i appreciated a lot. (COBWEB -2023- and TARGET -2023- the previous ones). And this is good news, i mean, i am a big fan of Korean cinema but i think it regressed a lot during the last years. If it's indeed on the rise, every moviegoer should be pleased.
SLEEP is somewhat mislabelled : This is not a comedy even though it seems at times that it doesn't take itself too seriously and there is -vaguely- a darkly comedic element. This is neither a typical horror movie. I would describe it as a psychological drama horror movie, intense and suspensful. It doesn't drag for a second, on the contrary, it grabs you by the throat from the start and it's a fun/intense ride all the way. A suspension of disbelief is fully required though, this is not the most convincing and realistic movie of the world, but it's a psychological drama horror movie, you shouldn't expect something like that either way.
Better acting performances than the average horror movie, and most important, you can't guess what is exactly happening. It could be this or that but you can't be sure, so i was very curious to see where it goes.
An entertaining and succesful movie of this genre.
May December (2023)
7.2/10. Recommended.
First of all, this is not for everyone. I don't mean that it takes a higher lever of personal aesthetic/culture in order to appreciate it. No, this is not some kind of masterpiece addressing for a few cinephiles. I mean that you need to love this specific genre : MAY DECEMBER is a drama movie, a bit slow/uneventful in which the most important things are not the ones who are happening on the screen but the ones who are being implied. Furthermore, don't expect emotional outbreaks/overdramatic moments/resolution. Still, this is intense and interesting. I couldn't expect for this kind of movie to last 120 minutes and not for a second to drag. I could watch more minutes.
So, if you like movie like these and you appreciate great acting performances, you will probably like it as well. Portman and Moore are expectantly great but i think that Melton steals the show, he is spectacular.
This is a flawed movie and Haynes has directed better ones but still, i liked it a lot.
Bound to Vengeance (2015)
6.9/10. Recommended.
I think this is underrated. 5.6/10 is not a fair rating. This is definitely better than the average thriller movie (with horror elements). I can see the reason why some people didn't like, it's indeed far fetched. Most people hate it when a character acts kinda irrationally, especially in a thriller movie. Yes, when something like this happens, thriller movie lose its plausibility.
Nevertheless, this is so strong and good that i didn't mind its flaws. First of all, the acting. The leading actress and the villain were amazing, their performances were way above the average performance in this genre. Then, the plot. This movie is dealing with serious stuff. This is not Halloween neither Scream, there are no ghosts here neither God-like masked men who never die. There are monsters here who exist in real life. It's undeniable that whatever happened here, is happening in the real world. And this movie is adressing these terrible issues.
Regardless of the above, this movie grabs you by the throat, not a second wasted, this is thrilling and intense until the ending. Nothing more i could expect from a thriller/horror movie.
The ending seems a bit vague but if i guessed it right, it's a strong and unpredictable ending.
O Animal Cordial (2017)
6.1/10. Watchable.
I wanted to like it more. Regardless of my opinion, if you are a big fan of one location/psychological drama thriller movies, you will probably like it. I did like it up to a point, unfortunately some things didn't make much sense and the ending was definitely a failure. I can't be more specific because i don't wanna give a spoiler : The problem here is that this movie is simultaneously realistic and non realistic at all. I would be ok if the director had chosen a direction but he didn't. On one hand, this is a thrilling drama, tough to watch and the viewer can understand a thing or two about their motives and why some of them lost their mind . One the other, it plays like an arthouse drama during the last 20 minutes, movie lost its plausibility, there is no common sense anymore and the characters are too bizzarre and weird. It ain't real anymore, it's like an art/dream- like movie.
I could live with either direction, however that didn't happen and the movie was not cohesive anymore but chaos and mess.
Still, this is definitely not bad and if you don't mind violence and morally gray characters, you will like it, if you like this genre.
Errementari (2017)
7/10. Recommended.
I don't have something meaningful to add which had not already been said. Don't expect a horror movie, this is a fantasy/drama, a dark fairy tale. It's not scary neither intense but i liked it even though i didn't find the first 20-30 minutes that interesting. However, it was getting gradually better. As it progressed, i care more about the characters, i was kinda hooked and i appreciated a lot the dark comedy element. This is not a comedy of course, but as a fairy tale, it doesn't take itself too seriously.
In conclusion, this is a good movie as long as you know what to expect. The blacksmith and the little girl gave very good acting performances. It was nice watching something different.
Oppenheimer (2023)
8.3/10. One of the greatest movies of the last decade.
I guess i am late to the party, but better late than ever.
I was sure this is a good movie but its plot/running time made me a bit hesitant to watch it. I mean, i didn't care much about Physics, about Oppenheimer. Furthermore, the whole story about creating the bomb and the repercussions of it in his life, don't seem that intriguing. Maybe if it was shorter, but 3 hours about this? Why?
As it seems, i underestimated Nolan. And it's a goofy mistake if you underestimate one of the greatest directors of all time. I am a big fan of his work but i must admit that i didn't love DUNKIRK neither TENET. OPPENHEIMER is a different beast though. This movie grabs you by the throat and made you care about things which you didn't even imagine that might interest you. It's not that easy to watch but if you are an average iq person, you will understand most of it. This movie respects its viewers and their intelligence. Beware, don't watch it if you feel tired because it requires your attention. But it rewards you in the end.
I can't say anything that has not already been said. So, i 'll say this in the end of my review : Every actor here did a good or a great job, however, Murphy was transcendental. This is one of the most glorious acting performances of all time. I think i understood everything he communicated with his eyes. All the pride and the shame and the remorse and the "Still, I would have done it again a thousand times" attitude. All of his contradictory feelings. Congratulations mr Murphy. You did the (almost) impossible.
Mannequin (1987)
6.2/10. Watchable.
I am a non native English speaker, i don't know if we can use the adjective "Cute" for a movie, other than for a person. But that's what this movie is. Cute. I had not watched it until last night. I guess that if i had watched it back in the day, i would have rated it higher because we all love a little more the movies of our childhood. In any case, this was still funny and enjoyable, the leading characters were (again) cute and it was nice watching again Captain Harris ! And the ending was the best part, i mean, the last 20 minutes were even hilarious.
Still, i can't recommend it because there are far better movies to watch, even from this time era and this specific genre. But if you love these silly 80's comedies, then you should watch it.
Bu san (2003)
2/10. One of the worst movies of all time.
I think about the title of my review, it is too generous. This is not "one of the worst movies of all time" because this is not even a movie. It's some kind of joke or prank.
I like all kinds of movies. I have watched many arthouse dramas, i don't mind if a movie is slow-paced even uneventful as long as there is something to enjoy, let's say the acting performances, the symbolisms, the cinematography, dream-like sequences etc. BU SAN is not just slow and uneventful. There is nothing here resembling remotely to an artistic creation. Basically, there is nothing, period. Visiting the rest room or cleaning up the house is literally a more exciting experience than watching this movie.
I have reviewed hundreds of movies. I don't enjoy being so harsh. But this made me angry.
Old (2021)
2/10. By far, the worst Shyamalan's movie.
Not only Shyamalan's worst movie of course, but one of the worst movies i have ever watched. And i am not even a hater, for example, i think that THE HAPPENING is passable. I even liked his latest (KNOCK AT THE CABIN). However, there is not the slightest redeeming quality here. There is a promising start and then, it gets worse by the minute. At some point, this movie looked like an inside joke or something, it was like actors were not even trying because they knew subconsciously this was gonna be a failure. At some point, script didn't even make sense. And there is -to say at least- a really controversial scene here.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
7.5/10. Recommended.
This is one of the best movies of the last years, regardless of the genre. It's been 4 years since i watched it and i still remember many things that happened in this. I have watched hundreds of movies these years and i have forgotten most of them. PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN carved in my mind though. And that's a proof of its greatness : You won't ever forget a truly good movie.
People who are disappointed are the ones who thought this was gonna be a thriller/average revenge movie. (Whereas this is a REALLY dark comedy/drama). Maybe there are others who think it's, i don't know, "pc" or "woke". Nope. This is, unfortunately, a realistic movie depicting the struggles a woman has to face nowadays. There is nothing exaggerated here. And i am saying this as a man. PYW is about female perpective but there is no misandry here. This is reality. Behave yourselves, people. Holywood movies are too weird nowadays serving a devious agenda but this movie has nothing to do with all of this. I urge every man to watch this and educate himself, in order to be a better man.
Pushover (1954)
7.2/10. Recommended.
It's difficult to reach the 600 characters requirement when it comes to a film noir because there are not many things to say about this genre. You know what this is about, you know what characters are gonna be like, you even know the ending. So, i say this : PUSHOVER is slightly better than an average film noir. And this is duo to the plot, we are talking about a very interesting story here. I was very curious to see where it goes. It was even anxiety inducing. Old movies have a lot of positives but this is not a quality they usually have. Viewer doesn't feel much anxiety, it's just a fun ride. PUSHOVER is not like this. It's exciting all the way. And Kim Nova is even more seductive than the average film noir female character.
Late Night with the Devil (2023)
7/10. Recommended
This is one of the best horror movies of the last 3 years. This is not such a big accomplishment as it sounds, because i don't remember many great horror movies recently. Still, it deserves its good reputation because they really tried here to create something different. Something original. And something like that is very difficult nowadays, when almost every interesting story seems it's already been told. So, i applaud this movie for its creativity. It hooked me from the start, it was even exciting at times, scary at times and it never dragged even for a second.
I wish i could rate it higher, unfortunately the ending fell flat, as many other reviewers have mentioned. It was like throwing into garbage what made this movie unique. The ending it was like a mediocre horror movie ending. I think that if it was more subtle/creepy/eerie, this would have been much scarier and unforgettable. Furthermore, this is one of the rare movies that should have been longer. There were many interesting ideas/subplots here which could be explored further. It's a pity that all this creativity didn't reach its potential.
In any case, this is a good horror movie, well acted and well directed. Way more cerebral than an average horror movie.
Les amants criminels (1999)
6.8/10. Only for a specific audience.
I have watched many Ozon movies. I don't love each and every movie he has ever created, however he is a true Artist and there is always something to admire in his movies. "Les amants criminels" is not for everyone. It's a bit twisted, raw and provocative. Definitely not for too conservative people.
Still, i liked it. Above all, this is a love story, but not exactly the one you have in mind when you start watching it. Characters are kinda unlikeable but interesting too, so this movie never becomes boring because the script is also interesting. I couldn't guess where it goes, i was very curious to see the outcome. It's not easy to tell the genre here because this is uncoventional and puzzling, but i could call it a psychological drama/thriller with a VERY dark comedy element (The scene with the squirrel about 10 minutes before the ending, was hilarious).
So, if you want to watch a dark and twisted drama/thriller which gets surprisingly emotional and touching at particular moments, you should watch it. It's not a great movie, it's flawed and too weird, but i liked it.
Geomijip (2023)
6.9/10. Recommended.
1) Current Metascore rating: 52/100. This is a travesty, a sick joke. COBWEB is not a masterpiece and there will be moviegoers who find it mediocre or boring, however if you are a professional movie critic, you should be objective. Thank God, this is an artistic creation, not a Holywood propaganda piece obeying to guidelines which have no relation to the Art of Cinema.
2) Kim Jee-woon is a great director. If you don't know him, take a look at his filmography. There is a big chance you have watched some movies of him. COBWEB is not amongst his best movies, nevertheless, it's a good movie as long as you know a few things about what you are gonna watch.
3) So, COBWEB is something like an offbeat comedy. You may call it a comedy/drama, but there are not dramatic moments here. To be more precise, this is a farce, a satire, in the veins of "Day for Night" (1973, François Truffaut). A movie about making a movie. Plot is not complicated, it is easy to follow, there are signs of brilliance, at times it was even hilarious. Overall, it is not a great movie though. It should have been at least 15 minutes shorter and i can't say Jee-woon always succeeds regarding of what he tries to achieve. It's not that sharp nor exciting. Nevertheless, it was interesting all the way until its ending. I enjoyed every scene. Nice acting performances and well directed.
4) COBWEB is a love letter to the Art of Cinema. Lighthearted for a Korean movie, funny, never boring. Don't expect a masterpiece and you will enjoy it as well.
La ragazza che sapeva troppo (1963)
6/10. Watchable but not recommended.
I like a lot horror movies from this time era, however this movie is not that good. If you take a minute and think what is going on, you will realise that the script doesn't make any sense. I don't search for verisimilitude, especially from old horror movies. But at the very least, it shouldn't be ridiculous. I am afraid this is.
Nevertheless, i gave it six stars because it was enjoyable. It was a fun ride, Letícia Román is one of the most seductive actress i have ever watched, movie didn't drag and there was even a weird comedy element that i didn't hate.
It's more of a crime/mystery/thriller than a horror movie. As i said, i kinda enjoyed it but it is too messy and clumsy.
The City of the Dead (1960)
6.2/10. Watchable
Old horror movies (50's, 60's, 70's) are not that scary, with a few exceptions of course. Still, a lot of them are classy, stylish and enjoyable. A fun ride. No jump scares, no gore, no ridiculous killings. I am not saying necessarily that i prefer them from the newer ones, one can say that a good horror movie should scare the audiences. I am just saying that i enjoy each one of them for what they are.
THE CITY OF THE DEAD is well acted and well directed. It's always nice to watch the legendary Christopher Lee in any movie. It's short (78 minutes) so it doesn't get boring. However, it was not that interesting either. The final scene was borderline ridiculous, there was not even a mild twist and you always can guess what is gonna happen next.
So, there are far better horror movies from this time era. But if you are a dedicated horror fan, perhaps you should give it a chance.
Nu astepta prea mult de la sfârsitul lumii (2023)
6/10.
What a great piece of systemic propaganda! This is how it's done, people. A successful propaganda is never blatant, never shoved down your throat. You should add interpolated words/phrases among seemingly irrelevant dialogue or monologue. This movie ticks all the boxes.
Still, i'll be fair. Because i am a moviegoer not a propagandist. First of all, its running time is pure self- sabotage. There is not enough good material to support a 163 minutes movie. Director should learn a thing or two about the lost art of editing. "Lost" regarding to him of course, because every other director in the History of Cinema knows well that a movie should be well edited. I'll be honest though, it's less boring as it seems. It should have been at least 30 minutes shorter but overall, i liked it. As long as you know what to expect. This is an arthouse comedy drama. Not too dark to be called a dark comedy. The whole movie is technically a comment about sociopolitical issues. When it comes to criticizing capitalists, it was almost great. It's still propaganda obeying to the modern Elite's narration but still, there were many things here which i liked.
It's a clever movie as long as you are a patient viewer and you know what this is about. The leading actress was amazing. In general, there were good acting performances here. And pace was good for a 163 minutes movie.
In any case, lower your expectations : The only reason this has a 94/100 Metascore, it is because it's propaganda. I would have rated it higher if it wasn't. 7/10 is a more proper rating if you agree with everything Pro-Regime Media are brainwashing you night and day. But i don't, so i must remove 1 star. And that's because i am sparing. I should remove more stars.

The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan (2018)
6.6/10. Recommended but..
I am not so objective when it comes to Found Footage movies. I love this genre, even though i acknowledge that most FF movies imitate each other, they are not so creative and only 5-10 of them could be seen as great movies. Still, i enjoy the hell out of them and almost always, they make me scared.
So, i can't guarantee you will like it unless you are a big fan of FFM as well. In any case, it's a slow burn. Don't expect many jumb scares, this movie doesn't grab you by the throat. It takes its time in order to create its atmosphere and suspense. That's common ground among movies of this genre. If there is something which differentiates this movie, i'd say it's the characters. These are likeable characters and i empathized with them. Also, it was well acted for a FF movie.
I would rate it higher if it had a better ending. I am not saying this was bad, but it should have been stronger, to say at least. Unfortunately, it was somewhat flat.
Le dos au mur (1958)
7.3/10. Recommended.
I see only 5 reviews here and that's a shame, this is too good to be forgotten like that.
Not a masterpiece, but a good- maybe very good- French film noir. Non linear structure (as many good movies of this genre), great acting performances (both Moreau and Oury were great, same as Maurier), charismatic actors, interesting characters, overall, this was enjoyable, almost exciting until its ending. I would say it was even somewhat original and creative, i mean, film noirs usually don't differ much with each other. But LE DOS AU MUR had a few tricks up its sleeve. A well written film noir is not that difficult to find but it's not that easy either.
If you like this genre, there is no chance you won't like it, at least.
La chambre bleue (2014)
7/10. Recommended.
At first, i thought this is a neo-noir crime drama, with the typical narration of voice over etc. As it progresses, it turns into a crime-thriller/courtroom drama/whodunit or something like that. ANATOMY OF A FALL (2023) is a movie that came to my mind, like a comparison. However, you should know there is also an arthouse element here, this is not a typical crime investigating movie, after all, this is French.
It's good, well acted and well directed. I liked the first part better but it was still interesting until its ending. Don't expect anxiety-inducing moments, action scenes etc, this is a slow burn relying upon its atmosphere. I can't rate it higher because ending came abruptly and it was too vague, this movie had no real closure even though you can probably guess what happened. Still, it left me cold. I like movies that don't spoonfed their audience, but it was too much for me.
