Kadal (2013)
Mani Ratnam still shines !
Honestly speaking i don't know how this filmmaker named Mani Ratnam manages to enthrall the viewer in me with his every single film. That makes him truly a rare breed. A true genius. Yes Mani Ratnam is truly the wizard of Indian Cinema and he continues his magical journey with his latest offering "Kadal". A gem of a film in all ways.
Kadal marks the comeback of the 90s heartthrob Arvind Swamy and as expected he delivers a brilliant performance as Sam Fernando, one of his best roles ever. Arjun Sarja the Gentleman/Mudhalvan of Tamil Cinema is just terrific as Bergmans. He is a treat to watch in Kadal. The film also marks the debut of Gautham Karthik(son of yesteryear actor Karthik) and Thulasi Nair (daughter of yesteryear actress Radha). Needless to say these star kids can be proud of this incredible debut forever and they are indeed very very impressive. Special mention should be given to Ponvannan, Lakshmi Manchu and the child artistes who played the childhood of Gautham Karthik. They were really mesmerizing.
AR Rahman started his musical journey with Mani Ratnam long back in 1992 in the sensational Roja. When it comes to the songs of Kadal i felt like the Rahman of 90s has come back. Truly one of his best work. The BGM is too good and it provides the needed emotional depth to Kadal.
Kadal mainly deals with the conflict between good and evil which for sure has been approached by many filmmakers in the past but not as impressive and authentic as Kadal. Each and every frame of Kadal is captivating. Thanks to the amazing work by Rajiv Menon who cranked the camera.Absolutely it's Rajiv Menon the cinematographer at his best.Kadal is truly a film that deserves multiple viewing.Beautifully written by Jeyamohan Kadal is a masterstroke of Mani Ratnam. Hats off to the legend.
Thiruda Thiruda (1993)
Mind blowing entertainer
Thiruda Thiruda released in 1993 exactly 19 years ago . And i watched this epic achievement of Mani Ratnam today only. I don't know why i didn't watch this fantastic film all these years. Easily one of the best entertainers of Indian Cinema, this film deserved great acclaim and commercial success at the time of its release. Absolutely well crafted film. Thiruda Thiruda can boast of one of the best soundtrack of A R Rahman. Needless to say excellent cinematography by P C Sreeram. Those who haven't watched this fabulous Mani Ratnam film must realize that its high time to watch it. Hugely satisfying experience. Thanks to Flipkart for providing me the original copy of this beautiful film.
Filmistaan (2012)
Indian Cinema at it's best !!!!!
I watched this film at the 17th International Film Festival of Kerala. It was the second and last screening of the film. Though i did get great reviews about the film, i didn't expect this much to be frank. It turned out to be the most satisfying film of the fest...It was the biggest crowd puller of the festival ,needless to say i struggled a lot to watch the film and it paid off well. Each and every aspect of the film was just fantastic , be it the direction, photography, screenplay, editing, music and coming to the performances Sharib Hashmi as Sunny just mesmerized the audience with his splendid act. He was the real star of the film festival.Another notable act was that of Inaamulhaq who came up with a stellar performance.Filmistaan is easily one of the best debut i have ever seen. First time director Nitin Kakkar has made a gem of a film. The Silver Crow Pheasant Award (Rajata Chakoram) for the best debut director which he won at the festival affirms it. Don't ever miss this astounding work !!!!!
Chanakyan (1989)
Brilliant Film
One of the best thrillers of Indian cinema. Thats Chanakyan. Its an absolutely brilliant film. Backed by a fantastic screenplay & scintillating performances,Chanakyan is a must watch. It's a treat to watch Kamal Haasan & Thilakan perform. The film features one of the best climax ever. One of the major highlights of the film is it's background score by Mohan Sithara, which is truly exceptional. Hats off to the captain of the film T.K.Rajeev Kumar. The most shocking aspect of this film is that the producer Navodaya Appachan incurred losses owing to the origin of cassette piracy when it released.I don't mind watching this film a hundred times. It's an evergreen film which proves to be a spine chilling thriller every time you watch it !
Iruvar (1997)
The Cinema Paradiso Of Indian Cinema
Undoubtedly the best movie i have ever watched. Mani Ratnam, Mohanlal, Prakash Raj, A R Rahman & Santosh Sivan at their best. Mohanlals act in this film is a guide for all budding actors. The soundtrack of the film is amazing. Every shot of this masterpiece looks like picture postcards. Thanks to Santosh Sivan. I don't mind watching this film a hundred times. Iruvar is Aiswarya Rai's first film & its definitely her career best film. Mani Ratnam , Mohanlal & Rahman deserved national awards. Its a pity that they were not given national awards.Another thing which surprises me is that the movie was a flop, which is a wonder aspect of Tamil Cinema.
Minsaara Kanavu (1997)
Tamil Cinema At Its Best
Minsara Kanavu is one of my all time favourite movie. I haven't watched such a colorful Tamil film as Minsara Kanavu. The movie can be described as one of the best musical ever released in the history of Indian Cinema. The soundtrack of the film by A R Rahman is outstanding. After watching this movie one feels that Kajol should have done more tamil films. She is picture perfect & delivers a brilliant performance.Arvind Swamy is amazing in one of his best roles ever. Choreographhy by Prabhu Deva is mesmerizing so is the cinematography by Venu. Each and every song of this film is a visual spectacle."Vennilave Vennilave" and "Oooh Lala la" truly stand out.In all ways a gem of a film from Rajiv Menon.
