Peluca (2003)

Winner!
17 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I saw "Peluca" after becoming an ardent fan of "Napoleon Dynamite" so this may not be the most objective review ever written.

That being said, I thought this short had just as much heart and the essence of the feature film; although, I did miss Uncle Rico, Kip and the rest of the cast. I liked the rough or grainy look of the film (even if it was an unintentional effect) because it added to the "feel" of the film.

I don't think the film depicts the characters as dorks or losers, instead it seems to portray Seth as a selfless, good-hearted and true friend. After all, he didn't buy the much coveted fanny pack for himself, instead he chose to buy the wig to help out his friend.

"Peluca" and "Napoleon Dynamite" could have easily been made into mean-spirited films with the main objective being to make fun of the less popular kids. Instead the movie seems to point out the good qualities of Seth and his friends, making them cool in their own way! It's a fun, feel good film.

Warning: Spoilers
This is a movie I am going to need to watch more than once to fully appreciate.

I read such outstanding reviews regarding "Strangers with Candy" and generally enjoy any film that does well at Sundance; which left me wondering what I was missing after watching the movie. I don't know, maybe I was suffering from some type of synaptic misfire and my brain was not processing the humor.

I can't say I disliked the movie, I just didn't love it as I had hoped. If I had seen the TV sitcom beforehand, had been more familiar with the characters and premise, I may have had a more positive opinion of the film.

Amy Sedaris and the rest of the cast gave incredible performances and Amy's physical transformation into Jerri, was so believable I didn't recognize her as the actress I have seen in countless other roles.

In this case I think there is not a problem with the film, but with the viewer. I want to watch "SWC" again because I think I need a second viewing to realize what makes this movie special.

A very special film!
1 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
With nearly 1,300 comments regarding "Napoleon Dynamite" on this site, there is not much left to say; nevertheless, here goes: The first time I rented "Napoleon" it ran for no more than 15 minutes before it was ejected from the player and returned to the video store. However, after seeing Jon Heder in "Just Like Heaven" (yes someone did watch that film) I decided to give ND another shot. The second viewing gave me a whole new perspective and appreciation of the movie.

While watching this film the first time I made an assumption that I was not going to like it, even remotely. I was certain that it was going to be just another formulaic "kids" movie about the goofy, unpopular kid/crowd, that suddenly becomes an A-lister and the epitome of cool! I was also assuming it would be filled with childish jokes, sophomoric humor and would consist mainly of burp/fart/puke scenes. I don't think I have ever misjudged a movie so completely! Instead I found the opposite to be true; Napoleon Dynamite was filled with smart, witty, realistic and touching dialog and situations. (Object lesson: "Never judge a book by it's cover"!) The movie was cast brilliantly and the choice of music was a match made in movie land heaven! I cannot envision any other actor/actress portraying the characters than those chosen and the music could not have fit the film more perfectly!

I would recommend Napoleon Dynamite to anyone of any age; it is a very special film!

Elron made watching this film fun!
30 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I appreciated almost everything about this film; the cinematography, the direction the soundtrack etc. If I had to name one specific aspect of the project that seemed to stand out, it would be Jon Gries' portrayal of Elron; his (Gries') performance was phenomenal!

The negative points of this movie could be more quickly stated than the positives because, in my opinion, there are very few negatives associated with this film.

I enjoy movies where there is a little room for interpretation as a result of the use of symbolism. The symbolism is not so complex that it makes the movie confusing, it just gives the viewers something to discuss after viewing this title.

"The Big Empty" is a keeper! I have watched it several times and find something new with each viewing!

So, if you get a chance, buy, rent or borrow this film then sit back, watch, discuss and enjoy!!

See where music videos began!
14 April 2003
If you appreciate the many talents of Michael Nesmith, this is a must see! The new DVD has it all, music, comedy, dancing and even newly added commentary by Mr. Nesmith, on the making of the film. "Light", one of the five music videos, is beautiful. I loved the way it was filmed. If you want to laugh, "Marnin Grita", "Bitty Soda" or "Name that Drug" should do the trick!! This was 60 minutes of complete entertainment. If you like good music or have a sense of humor, this is for you!
