A great and deeply moving film
9 May 2003
This great and deeply moving film is easily one of the best depictions of the terrible and tragic recent events in the Balkans. Colla captures the story with great humanity and manages to be touching and true without ever resorting to sentimentality or dogma. An important film on the subject that deserves a wider release.

a revelation
9 May 2003
Chiwetel Ejiofor is a revelation in this phantastic movie, and Audrey Tatou is forgiven all her bug-eyed cuteness from Amélie in this compelling look at the seedy underbelly of a dark and dangerous London few of us know exists. Stephen Frears and Steve Knight have managed that rare beast - a masterpiece of an intelligent thriller!

pretentious, predictable and boring
9 May 2003
Pretentious, predictable and boring, this is one of Altman's least interesting films. The excellent Richard E. Grant delivers, surprisingly, the best performance of a mostly tired all-star cast in this americanised idealisation of English upper class behaviour. Is this what great directors do at the end of their careers (see Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut)?

an interesting movie with great looks
9 May 2003
An interesting little movie with great looks, this is one of the hard to find, hidden gems of UK independent film making. With great film noir photography and a superbly haunting soundtrack, this surprisingly well-crafted movie creates a uniquely atmospheric and oppressive view of contemporary London. Good performances too, especially from the excellent Stuart McQuarrie as the dubious private detective, as well as some promising new faces.

bland and clichéd
9 May 2003
Bland and clichéd, this is an annoying film about what could have been a great story. Sadly, the makers abandoned any attempts at an edgier look at immigrant life and turned it into a soppy crowd pleaser of a feeble romantic comedy. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but it feels like a missed chance to greater things. Check out the TV series spin-off for an even less challenging approach to the lowest common denominator of audience tastes.
