Death on the Nile (2022)
Why all the hate?
First of all, I enjoyed the film. It is no masterpiece but everyone here seems to despise it. Fine, but what troubles me is all the complaining about how "woke" it is. Go back and look at the 1978 version and notice how Miss Bowers is often wearing mens clothes. It was already there in the earlier film. Second of all, no , I don't think that Black people were treated as well as 1937 as they are here , but you know what? For 100 years Hollywood cast white people as Black (Pinky) or Asian (Aloha) or Latin (Hell is For Heroes) . Real stories were whitewashed , like in 21, a real story where almost the participants were Asian . Guess what color they were in the film? I hope all the people upset over the woke casting have the same complaints about the brown face in the original West Side Story-a movie I like. If Hollywood can cast white actors as non white characters then they can now cast people of color where "they don't belong ". Reading these venomous reviews makes me fear for our future.
Finding 'Ohana (2021)
Cute
Sheesh-being self consciously woke is not a problem here. How dare Netflix try to introduce its audience to a culture that practically nobody outside Hawaii knows anything about huh? God forbid we learn a little something.
In all seriousness, the film is too long, the writing and acting are not great, but as someone with Hawaiian roots, I enjoyed it. It's no Goonies, which is no masterpiece itself, but if I was ten years old I would probably love this.
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963)
It's an unfunny, unfunny, unfunny, unfunny world
It's an unfunny, unfunny , unfunny world. This-the SHORT version-is at 154 minutes, mind-blowingly overlong. I laughed, no, make that snickered maybe 4 times, and not at the slapstick . The Lincoln statue, and Terry Thomas' monologue about "bosoms" are the biggest laughs in the film, which ain't saying much. Ethel Merman is supposed to be annoying but she is so abrasive as to be unwatchable. Not until Vince Vaughn in "Made" 38 years later would we see a film character this irritating. Spencer Tracy is the only character not yelling and screaming but he looks so old and frail that you actively worry about his well-being. On the plus side, the car stunts are probably the first of their kind-no Cannonball Run without them. But, like those other epic 60's comedies The Great Race and "Those Magnificent Men in Their FLying Machines" this is way too long and not funny. The epic comedy was not done right until "The Blues Brothers", "Ghostbusters" and , God forgive me, "1941", which was promoted in the UK with the line "it's mad, mad, mad ,mad!" "Rat Race" is the unofficial remake.rip-off of this film, and it's actually better, although I never saw Scavenger Hunt or Million $ Mystery. And, as my name indicates, I am a huge fan of classic comedy , but this is no classic.
