The definitive Tuskens episode
30 August 2022
Loved this one! We finally get one the most fascinating races of the Star Wars world covered: the mysterious Tuskens! Since the first Star Wars movie I was curious about the sand people. They looked so cool and bad asses with those scary masks, but we never had the opportunity to know more about them. Before the Tuskens, other races received more attention from the Star Wars directors: we had the adorable Ewoks - that had whole movies and animations about them; we had the Chewbacca family in the Star Wars Xmas episode, the Mandalorians and so on.

Now the Tuskens are something else: they are not just desert thugs screaming like donkeys, they are nomads with their own culture and rituals. Boba Fett not only become their friend, but also eventually gets accepted as one of them, learning their martial art and even participating on a trippy ritual - which was interesting and funny to see.

We also get to see a train (!) for the first time in Star Wars - these things are always a treat.

The Mandalorian: Chapter 11: The Heiress (2020)
Season 2, Episode 3

Pirates of the Stars
9 December 2020
One of the best things in the Star Wars universe is all the references to movies and pop culture. Everybody knows that "The Mandalorian" pays homage to the cult series "Lone Wolf and Cub" but in the second season we have a lot more. Episode One was a nod to "Dune" with its giant worm, Episode Two had the "Alien" cocoons and "The Lord of the Rings" spiders. On episode Three, the octopus-like pirates from "Pirates of the Caribbean" show up and even the Mandalorians team look like Japanese heroes "Power Rangers". Ep. 3 is a bit shorter than the others but doesn't fail to entertain.

13 Assassins (2010)

Terrible samurai film
31 March 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Lately I have become interested in samurai films, so I have been watching quite a lot of them - from the entertaining Lone Wolf series to the Kurosawa classics, with the late legend Toshiro Mifune. Those old movies are great but they lack in good resolution and better color. So I came across this Japanese film "13 Assassins" filmed in 2010. Recent stuff, sounded interesting. So I watched it - very good production, with a stellar cast including a member of the Japanese band SMAP who plays the bad guy. The problem starts with the plot. It's the old "small group of brave samurai against bad guy with army in larger number" just like Seven Samurai, The Last Samurai and 47 Ronin. Here, the 13 assassins are gathered to fight a sadistic lord. Despite the fact that the plot is more of the same, this is a post-Hollywood, post-video game samurai movie. It has all the action, sound effects and visuals of the blockbusters, including bombs and boars on fire (yes)... and gore, lots of gore. It has disturbing scenes, like the amputated woman and even a non-explicit homosexual intercourse. The biggest problem for me is that the guy who hired the 13 samurai to kill the lord Naritsugu actually had the opportunity to finish the job at the bridge. He had his fellows pointing their guns to him (but that would make the film end at the 1 hour mark.) Anyway, this is entertainment for the young audiences, craving some ketchup. Great production but lacking substance.
