Indigenous artists who are master carvers from the Northwest Pacific in Canada and Papua, New Guinea travel to live in each other's homes and it is riveting to watch. Killer Whale and Crocodile is lushly photographed, tenderly told, respectful of and glorying in cultures who are in harmony with the earth.
The art is astounding, profound and like living prayer. It is fascinating to watch it being born, and understand that both pure spirit and hard work are required. Seeing the artists sharing their techniques, working side by side, gives real insight into creative vision.
The direction is intimate. There's lots of loving detail of the carvings. The two vastly different forests are panorama as are the ceremonies in both lands, shot at angles that make us feel we are there, being transported by the breathtaking music and dance.
It's a lovely story, somewhere between movie and documentary. Fans of either will be entranced.
