Don't Worry Darling (2022)
All style with very little substance.
The story was good but took too long to get to the reveal and once it did, a few minutes later the movie was over with very little explanation. As many have said, Florence Pugh did a lot with the material she was given. Yes, she absolutely carried the movie. Aside from the beautiful cinematography, the only other positive is the overall theme that when men can't easily control women, they find ways to do it by force. It rings parallel to the realities faced by women in the U. S. with the overturning of Roe v. Wade and potential bans on contraception. Finally, I ignored the real-life controversy surrounding the movie. If Olivia Wilde wanted to cheat on Jason Sudeikis to have an affair with Harry Styles, that's their business.
The Bear (2022)
Absolute Perfection
The show is perfect in every possible way a television show could be. Yes it's a comedy but it's very much a drama. It's well written, the characters (and the actors who portray them) have depth. And as someone who's worked in the restaurant industry, it's also incredibly authentic.
Sweet Magnolias (2020)
The Reason I Left the South
Full of religious, preachy, churchy references. We get it, most southerners are conservative, small town, all-Americans. No need to overdo the stereotypes. I was born and raised in the south and left 5 years ago to get away from the saccharine sweet fakeness of it all. This show emphasizes the "bless your heart" b.s. As if that wasn't bad enough, the acting is mediocre, the writing abysmal, and the plot entirely predictable. The characters have the depth of a kiddie pool. Also, I can't believe Jamie Lynn Spears made it to season 2. Surely when we freed Britney we'd be free of her trifling little sister. As for people comparing this to Gilmore Girls, how dare you?! GG had excellent acting, writing, and character depth. I would compare this to Hart of Dixie, but at least in that show the cliche fake southern belle characters are satire. Even then those characters had more chemistry that these three supposed "best friends". Speaking of chemistry, the main character and the baseball coach or whatever don't have it either. He has the personality of drywall, but I guess we're supposed to like him for the abs? I know the target audience for this show, but they should've kept it on the Hallmark channel, no need to evangelize on other networks.
Island of Grace (2009)
Only the acting is worse than the writing.
Calling this a low budget Lost would be an insult to Lost. One of the actors comes across like he's never acted a day in his life (striped polo), the other two aren't much better. Blech.
Out of Death (2021)
Lala Kent cannot act
Not sure how she got this role aside from it being a D-List movie, but she needs to stick to reality tv where the only requirements are plastic surgery and substance abuse. Speaking of D-List, Bruce Willis had no business being in this movie but I guess he has bills to pay like the rest of us. My husband, brother, sister-in-law, and myself tapped out about 30 minutes into the movie...it was that bad.
Christmas Inn Farmstead (2020)
As terrible as you'd expect
The lead actress can't act, like at all, and doesn't seem like a good match (looks wise) for the gorgeous male lead. Also, the matching ugly Christmas clothing from Lost & Found? They looked brand new, were cute, and happened to fit perfectly. Also, was her sister in another country that it took her so long to bring her clothes?! I know we're supposed to suspend reality but the story was just...lame.
Ted Lasso: Beard After Hours (2021)
Another example of why S2 is such a mess.
The additional episodes Apple ordered after the writers had already written out the season was a terrible idea. What we end up with is another episode that feels as out of place as the Christmas episode in August. Whether the episode is brilliant or not is obviously debatable, but I know it's not helping a sophomore slump of season that's already controversial.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Best movie in the DCEU
Excellent pacing, action, humor, plot, acting and cinematography. The movie kept me guessing throughout and my only regret was not seeing it in a theater. My only criticism for the movie is John Cena can't act and he isn't funny.
One Week to Sell (2021)
A breath of fresh air for Millennial buyers
My husband and I are currently house hunting and completely turned off by all the dark, cramped, & outdated houses on the market. This show helps us understand the potential many of these old houses have when you're not willing to do an expensive and time consuming renovation and turn-key, move-in ready houses are in short supply. More shows like these, please!
Last Christmas (2019)
Feel-Good Christmas Movie
Emilia Clarke is a hilarious actress and it's interesting that her most famous role as Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones was such a serious one. Regardless, she really shines in this movie, as I expected. She sweet and adorable and so are all the characters in this movie. I spent most of the movie laughing and a moment or two crying. Surprisingly, my husband loved it and said we should add it to our annual Christmas movie watch list. An added bonus, if you like George Michael/Wham!, the movie is filled with their songs.
Midsommar (2019)
Two hours of my life I'll never get back.
Slow, boring, predictable, unoriginal. A long winded way of reaching a lackluster ending. The characters are so one dimensional you don't care if they live or die - I know I didn't. I mourned the death of no one. I wouldn't be so disappointed if the ending had been worth the excruciating first 95% of the film but it wasn't. Involuntary human sacrifice, that's it? Wasn't everyone expecting that out of this movie? A weird mating ritual? Shocker, no one saw that coming despite the numerous hints throughout.
My only suggestion to this is to take a drag of your joint every time there's a chant or someone takes a psychedelic or Christian disappoints Dani. At least you'll be high and not care you're still stuck watching this desperate attempt at art.
Drinking Buddies (2013)
White Hipsters Drinking Lots of Craft Beer
In an incredibly diverse city like Chicago, this movie just shows us the day to day life of white hipster millennials drinking a lot and being "chill" while tackling (or avoiding) their first world problems. I'm sure there's a niche audience that can relate to this but it just perpetuates the stereotypes of both white millennials and the craft beer industry and alienates most audiences. This is not a romcom or a romance or a comedy (despite the talented cast) it's just a background movie you put on if you're tackling errands around the house. I can't even hate the movie because there's not much there to begin with.
How Do You Know (2010)
Quite literally one of the most boring movies I've ever seen.
How did so many talented actors agree to do this after reading the script? I had to watch the movie over two days since it kept putting me to sleep.
Can You Keep a Secret? (2019)
Hallmark/Lifetime movie quality
I read the book several years ago and I remember liking it, what was this hot mess of a screen play? Bad writing, bad acting, terrible comedic timing where almost all of the jokes fell flat. The back and forth between the main characters didn't seem to make any sense and just seemed forced (the flirting and the arguments). Her roommates were really awkward empty characters with equally poor acting skills. The coworkers and overall office environment were another bucket of awkward, especially the ex-boyfriend who really couldn't act. Oddly enough the best sidekick was the co-worker she'd get coffee with. The only thing I liked about the movie was the male lead, he's good looking and I felt bad that he was subjected to such a terrible script.
Christmas with a View (2018)
Bad acting, REALLY bad writing
This story line, this plot, terrible! Who wrote this? I could've pulled a better story out of my middle school diary. Not only was it unoriginal, it was so lackluster when it was supposed to be emotional. The romantic scenes were bland too. The only thing that was enjoyable was the dating montage, as they genuinely seemed to be having fun together. No one in this movie had any acting skills either. The lead actress, Kaitlyn Leeb was possibly the worst, not just how she delivered her lines but also how she moved around in every scene, she always seemed stiff and awkward. She had zero chemistry with the lead actor, Scott Cavalheiro, but his acting was better, he seemed more natural than everyone else. The lead actress's best friend was overacting in many of her scenes as well, and her fiancé Clive was really bad, like I think they just used someone's relative to play the part instead of a real actor. Vivica A. Fox can act, but as my husband put it, seemed so out of place in the movie. Or maybe it was just the pitiful acting from the costars she shared scenes with? Her overly Botoxed face was somewhat distracting too. Overall, I think I just watched this because I thought Scott Cavalheiro was cute.
Champions (2018)
Wayyy too "woke" for my taste
Usually I love Mindy Kaling's writing, The Mindy Project and The Office were hilarious. Fortune Feimster isn't funny in this, nor was she funny in The Mindy Project. Andy Favreau can't act, and his character is cliché. The only redeeming quality on this show is Anders Holm, but he couldn't carry this show on his own.
Selling Sunset (2019)
Vapid, superficial, shallow
The Real Housewives of Orange County if the housewives were selling houses in L.A. These women are plastic, catty, and completely unprofessional. The brothers who founded The Oppenheim Group are disgusting pigs for only hiring women that look and behave like escorts to sell million dollar houses. The Los Angeles stereotypes are alive and well on this tv show and quite frankly, I'm disappointed Netflix would stoop so low, I expect this reality trash from the Bravo Network. HGTV wouldn't touch this with a 10-foot pole.
The Kissing Booth (2018)
Elle is 16/17, Noah is 17/18
Elle is a Junior in the movie and Noah is a Senior, not sure why reviews keep referring to her as 14, she's not. The actors that played Elle and Noah were 18 and 20 when they made the movie and they're together in real life.
Ibiza (2018)
People are way too uptight!
This movie was lighthearted and fun and I found myself living vicariously through Harper and her friends. Honestly, their adventures reminded me of myself when I was in my 20's, so while the storyline isn't exactly Oscar worthy, who hasn't gone clubbing with friends and hooked up with a guy? The movie isn't trying to be deep or heavy, just a good time, and that's exactly what it is. Bonus, the soundtrack is AMAZING!
