Oppenheimer (2023)
Troubled character study
Deliberately shot as a character study. Seen through the eyes of the man who made the first nuclear bomb and the consequences of this dangerous, powerful weapon on him. Psychologically. We see no Hiroshima. No aftermath. Just Oppenheimer's terrified face. His many relationships. His wife. And his unhappy lover. The politics behind the whole thing. How the US government, punished his peaceful intentions for the future. His banned Communism of the era. Like Prometheus who stole fire from the Gods to give to mankind and was punished for eternity for his sins. Oppenheimer created something unman like, which was not supposed to be meant for this earth, not only destroying humanities future, but himself, inside.
Poor Things (2023)
The baby goes wild
A woman is reborn by a crazy scientist after she committed suicide. But she has the brain of a baby and has to learn the mysteries of the world and how to develop into an adult again. With comic results. Anything goes for her at the horror of all the other adults.
Sex has no bounds even in public. Hitting people. Dancing unconventionally. Eating crazily. Saying rude things to people.
She is innocent to everything like a baby. There is no right and wrong for her at first. When she develops she understands more the horrors of the world and has her own morality, learning through her own experience.
By letting her self roam free and experience everything possible in the world she manages to find herself. Rejecting what she wants and keeping what she likes. Other people remain trapped in the world imposed on them by society which creates animosity. For what is right for one person is wrong for another.
By the end the other adult characters seem more flawed than her and she seems more wise. Which is the joke. Let yourself roam free and you will be free of the chains imposed on you by fellow man. And you will become a better person.
Bouboulina (1959)
Bouboulina
Very interesting film about the Greek War of Independence heroine Bouboulina. Who helped defeat the Ottoman Empire and liberate Greece as a naval commander. Shows the suffering Greeks went through at the time but also the humorous side to small island life in Spetses. Even though shot on a small budget the battle scenes on the ships look amazing. Irene Papas, in her first starring role plays her with expertise, portraying the passion that drove her to become such an important figure in Greek history. You can feel a sense of freedom coming in the use of the beautiful, vast open air island photography, the sense that the many Greek islanders are finally overcoming the few oppressive Turks there and of course the theme of the freedom of the open seas, which Bouboulina reiterates throughout the film that all she ever wanted to do since she was younger was to sail the wide open seas. With this film we feel like we can sail with her.
