Troll (2022)
10/10
Folklore at it's Best
9 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I was excited to see how the movie would enfold with a creature from wonderful stories of Norwegian folklore. I was probably expecting something similar to the movie Jack the Giant Slayer. Savage brutality without remorse or empathy. Originally, the troll was supposed to be the villain, however their backstory made me feel very differently. I felt heartbroken and a great wash of shame as a human being at the end of this movie. I feel like this is probably the only troll movie that has a positive and different viewpoint on trolls from folklore. It's refreshing to have trolls not be painted as inherently evil. It makes me wonder what their version of events would be like if they had a story to tell. Would we be the villains? The monsters out to kill their children in the dead of night because we're afraid of them and refuse to understand them? Humans have been known to be cruel and vicious monsters throughout history to our own kind, so who can truly say what the truth is when our version of truth gets easily warped through bias and preconceived concepts. It's a beautiful message.
