Mr. Piper (1960– )

Mr. Piper in the United States
22 July 2023
"Mr. Piper" entertained many children in the United States BUT a kid had to live near the Canadian-US border to tune into the CBC, which broadcast it early in the morning. Growing up in Detroit, Michigan, Alan Crofoot could be heard singing in our den regularly thanks to CBC Channel 9. Then there was "The Friendly Giant," "Chez Helene," and "Casey and Mister Dressup." Mr. Piper was the one I crushed on though. He was just so amiably and beaming with a beautiful voice. I was so sorry to read about how Crofoot passed away. He's at peace now; while we have platforms like YouTube to watch him and all the other live action and animated shows we sometimes think we dreamed :)

Satan War (1979)
6/10
Am I watching this now? It seems like I might be...
14 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm streaming/watching a movie but I missed the title somehow. A woman was just sidelined by an ugly "dinette" chair. There's a lot of crying. There doesn't seem to be a war as much as there's the revelation of poor taste in tract house furniture of the 1970s. I came in during a talky Black Mass. It's definitely like a couple just returning from a honeymoon in the Poconos only to find their love nest has turned into a carnival spook house. I'm thinking that Satan has possessed the wife because she keeps SCREECHING and SCREECHING and SCREECHING. She might be from Teaneck. Then there's some way wacky synths happening not to mention coffee boiling. The demonic intrusion of Louise, pinned to a wall covered in ghoul-spit-yellow flowered wallpaper, is a high point. I think? I'll never watch it again, so I might have missed something, but I can tell you this: I'll now know that I'm at war with Satan if my sink fills up with stinky rubber and Louise SCREECHES that she doesn't believe in the supernatural despite everything that's come before. Honey! It ain't just a ghost! It's SATAN! ***** stars for weirdly enjoyable incoherence.

Tough As Nails (2020– )

Sad commentary...
9 August 2020
I watched one episode of "Tough As Nails" and came away from it shaking my head at how sad it is when "work" is exploited as a television game show or the equivalent of a WWF event. That some people need the motivation of a prize and being hailed as "tough" in order to work hard is flabbergasting. That working hard becomes an entertainment is just wrong.

Here's an idea for a television show: a series of documentaries showing every day, average U.S. citizens working hard but NOT as part of a competition or for a prize. Show people working hard just because it's the right thing to do for society/community. Show people working hard to help others. Show people working hard without the need to be a "winner."

This program is just one more in a series of sad commentaries on life in the current era of the United States.

Love it, just wish it was longer...
2 April 2020
I've seen this film twice now--once not long after it came out and, again, last night--and each time it startled me in the way, I think, good horror should. The unexpected ferocity of the killer is what gets me.

On the plus side, good acting (for the most part), believe characterizations, an eerie setting, and a really interesting, at times beautiful soundtrack. On the down side, I want some back story and a longer film.

I know enough about folklore that I can come up with my own definition of what a "tattie-bogle" is, but there's something missing. Why is this happening? What is causing this? Not knowing does provide the imagination the opportunity to fill in the blanks, but I would have liked more.

Hell Mountain (2017)

I need to watch this one again...
11 February 2020
While watching this film, it lost me at a certain point, can't remember which point, but it did. Just a few moments later, it pulled me back in. I started appreciating it. When it concluded, I came here, to IMDB, because "Hell Mountain" left me in a kind of, 'WTF did I just watch?' mindset, compelling me to do some research on it.

"It's all fun and games until the blood-letting begins." I said to friends something very similar to this during a summer holiday in Cornwell: "Everything was going great until the blood-letting." Maybe that biased me toward liking this film from the start, despite its meanderings...or were they? I'm not a cat lover, either, which was good going in. I need to watch this one again.
