Pinky Dinky Doo (2005–2009)

Great vocabulary builder!

I have to admit, when I first saw the ads for this new show I thought it was just another stupid kiddie show. My 5 year old daughter started watching it and it quickly became one of her favorites.

Pinky Dinky-Doo is a young girl who makes up stories to entertain and help her little brother. Pinky's stories are sometimes a little "out there" but whenever she talks about something that is impossible in reality she always clarifies it by reminding us that she is telling a made up story. In each story Pinky is confronted with a minor problem which causes her to "think big" to figure out the solution.

The animation isn't that great , but the stories are cute and a different, often complex, vocabulary word is used throughout each show. My daughter has a speech disorder and does not speak as well as the average 5 year old, but she now understands the meaning of such words as scrumptious, predicament, agenda, and voracious. Despite her speech problems, I am willing to bet that she will have the best vocabulary of anyone in her kindergarten class this fall.

Oobi (2000–2005)

Not so sure about this show
2 July 2006
This has got to be the oddest show that Noggin has to offer. While the concept is certainly unique, I really can't see much benefit for preschoolers. My biggest complaint about Oobi is that none of the characters speak in complete sentences. My daughter has a language processing disorder. We have worked very hard to get her to speak in sentences. Every time she watches Oobi she reverts back to 2 word sentences. Oobi may be fine for a non verbal child, but not for a child who is overcoming a speech disorder or for a child who has average speech. I would be interested in hearing a speech patholigist's take on this show.
