Shôgun: Ladies of the Willow World (2024)
A new high
The previous episodes were boring already but this one is an episode just for the ambiguous side stories. But also misses that mark; quite an accomplishment, so the writing must be so bad or underdeveloped when they filmed the scenes. The chemistry among the figures, especially between Mariko and Bloddthorne is non existent. They should get rid of the Englishman, because as it stands now, he is perceived more like an extra and hasn't contributed much to move the story forward except being a Western-Placeholder being explained Japanese customs and culture at that time. Which is btw also heavily flawed and modernized to cater a Western audience.
This show is so incredibly disappointing and jaw breaking as I find myself yawning constantly.
3 Body Problem (2024)
GoT again?
Benioff and Weiss are were heavily involved in this production. What they're done to the Game on Thrones series is inexcusable. So, I don't trust them or productions with them. Moreover, I will not invest any more of my life time and money in their work. The likelihood of getting another great story and book butchered and disappointed by them once again is simply too high. My time is precious.
Based on many reviews here, this seems to be sadly (but expected) the case again. And, again, they get away with it. SMH.
This is so disappointing. What a huge, missed opportunity for great storytelling. There are so good writers out there, but these clowns get to do it. Can someone please do an adaptation that does these books justice instead of this nonsense.
Another Netflops Production.
You Are Wanted (2017)
Too painful to watch
I gave this one a go although my expectations were low. But wow, I was shocked by the cringy low quality of script and acting. I couldn't finish the second episode as I started feeling physical pain in my brain and was almost angry that such low quality is on offer (while other, much better series are discontinued or even totally removed from the services). It baffles my mind how someone can seriously watch this and think: "yes let's put it out there". Reading other reviews here, I would go as far as to argue that this production was rather damaging to the image of German series abroad as well as how German productions are seen since. A great example on how not to do it.
Shôgun (2024)
No Portuguese? Seriously?
The Portuguese speak English. Who in 2024 and in their right mind thought that this would be a good idea? Therefore the whole series is a complete clown show. It further presented in the so far published episodes a lot of flaws and illogical behavior of the characters. The story is simplified, rushed and takes stupid, unbelievable short cuts. Acting isn't that great and I cannot sense any chemistry, whether good or bad, amongst the characters, but that's probably due to the lazy script and directing. Cinematography is uninspiring and once more: who thought filming all in Canada would provide an "authentic" backdrop. Japan is beautiful and the film makers missed a great opportunity here. Because all of this, all portrayed feels unauthentic. Poor cast and characters. Most annoyingly Blackthorne, representing "the English", is just a Marty Stue, which is so utterly boring.
These 10-point reviews seem fake in their vagueness and majority as there's no way that this cheap, lazy production is above a 7. IMDB is losing credibility here.
I still cannot get over the fact that in the year 2024, they replace one language by English. This is extremely irritating, disappointing and blatantly ignorant and embarrassing. I'm not gonna watch more what these people create in the future. Ridiculous.
True Detective (2014)
Remove season 2 and 4
The first season is one of the best crime series ever made. Everything fits and the cinematography is outstanding. It had everything I hope for in a series. But then they made season 2 and I remember being extremely underwhelmed; already when the cast was announced. I gave it a chance but it was as expected: extremely boring and bad. Season 3 brought the series back to its roots and strength. Fortunately with beautiful cinematography again. Now I finished season 4 and I'm lost for words and can only shake my head: who greenlighted this production? I mean, HBO is complaining that they loose subscribers. But no wonder when you put out a rubbish screenplay and product. It had so much potential with great actors, I believe. But I would fire the creative team who was responsible for this trash.
R. I. P. True Detective.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022)
Time to pull the plug on HBO
What an awesome and well made series. I cannot praise it enough. It is fictionally and one can debate that. But I believe a pure biopic series wouldn't be that enjoyable. This is simply a pure joy to watch. But, again, HBO had gold and blew it.
I didn't knew the show got cancelled until I got to the last scenes and finished the last episode. Then I came here to see if that is really the case. Sadly it is.
I feel sorry for the creative team behind this series that they ended up on this platform. HBO is leading to its own demise. Who's making such decisions??
I am so tired of HBO slaughtering the best series (GoT, Westworld, Fargo, Snowfall) and now Winning Time. This will be definitely my last watch on HBO as I fear e.g., The Last of Us will experience the same faith, either cancelled or rushed as GoT. I don't see myself supporting HBO's disrespect and lack of any ambitions to produce top series from start to finish. This is how you loose locked-in, loyal customers.
Why should I stay on and forth and foremost pay them if they can't deliver what they promised? Why should I even start to invest my life time in anything they put out when the likelihood is extremely high HBO will butcher, rush and then cancel it. So, absolutely no way; that was the last time I got fooled. I am canceling my subscription.
The creatives and viewers deserve better services than such soulless distributors. I get that they argue that it was a business decision but I highly doubt that. But so is mine to gtfo from this mess. Time to show that to them too.
Luden: Könige Der Reeperbahn (2023)
Disappointing
The series kicks off strong. But, like so often, story and characters fade into cliches. So here the writing is to blame. I get that most of the portrayals are exaggerated but still everyone remains uninteresting. Klaus and Beagle were the only two characters who kind of seem believable, the others, especially the boxer, were just annoying and wanting me to skip their scenes.
I've to agree with the comment made here earlier: production design did a very bad job as it really doesn't look and feel like Hamburg in that time. The contrast what is shown in the series and on the photos during the credits of the last episode couldn't be larger.
Music is good but still very unlikely being part of these people's life.
What is standing out is the cinematography of the first two episodes: it is beautiful. But then the rest of the series is filmed in a generic way, unfortunately. I don't understand that shift also in visual quality.
Overall, I cannot understand why German series are so low quality; especially the scripts and acting? It's only "Das Boot", after that all German series were insignificant.
If your time is precious I cannot recommend this series.
Snowfall: Sacrifice (2023)
Game of Thrones turn of event
This episode was awful and stands out as the worst of the whole series. But I haven't watched the next episode yet and I'm unsure if I should. The mother character flip flopping makes no sense and she was the most annoying + unnecessary character of the whole series. I don't know what the writers thought? After the whole build up this was painful and cringe to watch. A huge letdown for us, the audience. Also, same as with the ridiculous ending of The Game of Thrones series, Snowfall has now become officially unrewatchable. Because now we know how stupid it ends. I am super disappointed. I guess I can spare the last episode as I don't care anymore.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022)
Mediocre sequel
I really enjoy MW but I don't know how one can make so many bad choices while having an almost perfect game as prequel. The only thing they needed to do was to upgrade the engine, graphics, maps, maybe the story and add a few new things here and there. It seems they replaced people in the development team by inexperienced game designers as numerous flaws and extremely poor design choices were made, deliberately. First and foremost the UI makes my head boiling. The prequel's UI was smooth, easy and quick to navigate without many clicks and changing screens. Now we have to deal with a convoluted mess across several screens. It blows my mind how one can design and QA seriously approve such an UI. Same applies to the game map in which icons are harder to see as most of them remain white. It is much harder now to navigate the rest of the team and more words are required. Once killed a comeback in Battle Royale is virtually impossible due to the lack of money, buy stations and loadouts. So once dead one can leave and start a new round to safe time and frustration.
The game is good but some wrong priorities were at play here. For instance, they rather put out a Rocket League modus than fixing the game and bugs. Again an unfinished product was released and now we are waiting it to be fixed and ready as promised.
The Peripheral (2022)
Nothing new here. Waste of time, again.
Again, a series that abuses the result of good writing or a good book as basis to produce the old, same series we've been watching over the last years. Another Series luring in an audience by a appealing setting and future world with all its potential for great and deep storytelling. But once again the writers and producers fell short by presenting us a flat hero story convoluted with several irrelevant side stories. Overall, the series is not well made and leave a lot of room for better cinematography, soundtrack and, unfortunately as I like them, acting. The latter is however likely the result of a bad script and directing. Also, I hate the current trend of series providing no catharsis and ending after substantial build up. As a viewer and admirer of good and thoughtful science fiction this is extremely frustrating and I am considering canceling my subscription.
Time (2021)
Best drama mini-series of the year
Finally, for a change, we can watch a well written series with great actors portraying normal people as I am so bored by most of the productions released the last two to three years. Despite the tragedy of the story it was a joy to watch Sean Bean and Stephen Graham with stellar performances. The whole cast is amazing. The writing was fantastic as was the length of three episodes; nothing was unnecessary dragged out or side story lines opened up. Therefore the series went deep. Thanks so much to the makers for this and reminding me that there are excellent filmmakers out there making even better and meaningful series.
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Really bad, so bad
The story is not original or interesting. Script must've been awful as must be the directing. Uninspired camera and cut. Character designs look cheap and unimaginative. Absolutely appalling acting and annoying main characters. CGI is a joke; worse than A New Hope and especially embarrassing considering it was released one year after The Fellowship of the Ring. Cities look like taken straight out of Futurama. George Lucas' ability to make movies hasn't improved over time - rather the opposite seems to be the case. A cringe fest deluxe. If you prepare for such it's a "fun-lmao-movie" to watch with your friends.
Making the Cut: Festival Wear (2022)
Judge Jeremy is not making the cut
This episode gave me the rest: this is just (staged or not) trash tv but not a serious fashion show. The other judges and especially Tim should have called out this narcissistic acting and shown the childish overreacting judge the door. That was nowhere near constructive. Completely unnecessary, unacceptable and especially unprofessional. The creators prefer "drama" over the mental well-being of its contestants. I can only conclude that this show and Amazon is openly supporting destructive, toxic behavior. There's no excuse! Shame on Tim, Heidi, Nicole and Amazon.!
What an immature ridiculous man this "designer" is and what an embarrassment for Moschino and Adidas.
Stranger Things: Chapter Nine: The Piggyback (2022)
Great season but weak, non-cathartic final episode
I really enjoyed this 4th season. Almost everything was spot on. But late season the story slowed down and the last episode is more of an anti climax leaving a lot of plot holes. It feels more like the first episode of season 5. And that would fit to the current, annoying trend of streaming services producing unfinished seasons.
Also, in contrast to the other episodes, this final episode is painfully stretched out without serving any purpose in telling the story but justifying all characters and story lines and with that to create boredom. The connection to Russia and the hive mind is totally neglected and many characters just don't show up anymore despite their earlier relevance. It appears more like a special feature to cater the fans; which it doesn't do very well. Season 4 finishes uninspired without catharsis which I find quite disappointing after the built up and a strong season.
It would have been better to finish the season with the 9th episode in my opinion.
Gangs of London (2020)
Disappointing
The series starts really strong and I was so happy to watch a series again where it felt the creators really were allowed to invest thought and effort.
This feeling however gradually diminishes with every episode as film making gets sloppy noticeable by silly cut scenes, plot holes and sudden irrational behavior by most of the characters which do not make any sense other than catering for the storytelling to take ridiculous shortcuts. As for instance, a person of the professional military trained killer squad is taking her microchipped dog on the mission. And an assignment is in the very same city she lives in with her family (in a flashy town house btw). Totally unbelievable. Also their "military tactics" were ridiculous. Police, neighbors, camera surveillance and common sense seemed to be totally wiped out in post-brexit London.
Overall, every character gets more annoying as the series progresses and is making irrational, unbelievable decisions.
Laughably, in the end the "Investors", previously portrayed of being afraid to be in any and especially criminal spotlight and public, drive around near crime scenes with a stretch limo to conduct their business.
Noticeable positive are only the performances of Joe Cole and Brian Vernel, the two Wallace-brothers, that kept me watching. The rest of the cast is unfortunately forgettable which is caused by the utterly poor script.
I hate where this series went and I don't care for another season.
The Gray Man (2022)
Boring as hell
Same old story we've seen 1000times before and especially done so much better. This one is a new low.
No wonder they loose subscribers as Netflix still continues to lower their standards, which will ultimately lead to their demise. The movie is empty had no character or single thing that would make it worthwhile watching: none, nada. Why would you make such a movie yet burn millions and disappoint people?
This star filled nonstory production was a waste of time, money and resources. What an embarrassment for everyone involved how they brag that it's their most expensive movie yet with such cringy, embarrassing result. Where did the money go? It can't be the movie because nothing was obviously invested here. I was bored til exhaustion and the dialogues, effects and "jokes" are pretty cheap and awful. No plot line.
The directors should be questioned and judged to what they have actually accomplished? I would not hire these guys again. Netflops should adjust their goals and especially quality standards.
I will be canceling my subscription nonetheless as this movie and streaming platform makes me feel stupid. And I don't want support wasting resources to make dumb movies.
Kimi (2022)
Bad boring movie
This lazy piece in every sense of filmmaking doesn't deserve that anyone wastes more time with it or put in a lengthy review (for what actually as it is so incredible flat). I just do it to warn everyone who hasn't watched it yet. This script and movie is so astonishingly boring. Acting and cinematography is (intentionally?) amateurish. Also story and characters are implausible and unbelievable. This will be definitely my last Soderbergh movie as he keeps on disappointing.
Outer Range (2022)
A complete waste of time
Terrible script. This series or story doesn't offer anything interesting or even new. Characters are annoying, unbelievable and act in their cliché roles but not as usual, normal human beings would. Especially the character of. Autumn/Poots doesn't make any sense and is unbearable to watch. There is much unnecessary stuff to stretch the thin story over 8 hours, illogical behavior/cuts and stupid plot holes. The plot twist isn't one. I can't believe I watched this crap.
Deutschland 89 (2020)
Pretty boring. Nothing new.
I really like the main character but this season is such a waste. The auntie-nephew conflict is dragged painfully out again; totally unbelievable, annoying and just boring. Also the other story lines are quite unoriginal and uninteresting. Huge disappointment is the last episode where everything is in the open, again. So we'll done for another season which I am not going to watch.
Tokyo Vice (2022)
Why watch an incomplete season?
When it stops halfway? Good, promising first season has no ending; a huge disappointment and let-down. Also the character of Samantha is way to prominent for their frankly uninteresting backstory. She doesn't really fit into the plot and feels like an afterthought. So, just don't bother watching until the next season is out. Who publishes series like that?
No Sudden Move (2021)
Extremely boring movie
Story isn't original or particular well written; pretty thin, and characters remain super flat and their motivation remains in the dark. Kids characters are quite annoying. Really a bad Soderbergh film.
Fortitude (2015)
Unrealistic af
Stopped after one Episode: every character is a (bad) cliché and annoying. Police making silly, unbelievable mistakes- would never happen; especially not in a Nordic country where the Police is well trained. Total waste of time,
Skylines (2019)
Best German Series
As a German most productions made in Germany make me cringe and cause a high level of "fremdschämen". This series however is pure gold. It is well written and extremely well filmed. Characters are authentic and actors are all great without the usual German overacting, as seen in most other productions aus Deutschland. The makers should be proud of what they have created. This is easily among the best German series ever produced. Not sure what hinders the continuation but It's such a shame that there's no follow up and closure.
Battlefield 2042 (2021)
DICE killed the BF franchise
Throw everything what was great on BF over board and try to copy CoD, Overwatch, Fortnite... and you get BF 2042 in addition with uncountable number of bugs and terrible design choices. BF had always an edge but they lost it.
R. I. P. Battlefield. I was a big fan once.
Dune (2021)
1984 version is better
CGI is better in this movie, but Lynch's 1984 film outperforms this lazy piece of a production design and writing of this movie on everything else. Atmosphere was much more dense, mystic and fearful in the 1984 movie. Can't believe this watered-down version is actually celebrated.
