Main Atal Hoon (2024)
Good political biography
A good movie depicting AB Vajpayees political journey. Pankaj Tripathi nails the role. Some surprises about his life that I wasn't aware of ! Definitely a slant towards the current dispensation but there is no way around that.
Technically the movie looked really good . The story moves at a fair pace and doesn't linger too much. Granted it may look more like a sequence of major historical events but brings the politics of the time amidst his poetic and oratory skills.
Only problems as with most movies of this kind is that it doesn't go as deep into some situations although it captures Vajpayees initiation into the RSS and their ethos reasonably well. There are gems of his contribution to recent events in India that are noteworthy. In summary a good biopic.
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (2022)
Impeccable storytelling and direction!
Madhavan has simply produced a great biopic that should set a marker in the movie industry. Keeping true to the story of Nambi sir, it serves as a wake-up call to Indian society and the people to truly appreciate who are their real patriots and silent sufferers, the criminal injustice of our so called Justice system and the propensity of our own to pull down people of ambition and brilliance.
SRK cameo is interspersed and interesting concept. The drama is to the point and does not linger
It was a gut wrenching story something I was aware of as a teenager in India but the scale and magnitude of its tragedy only became apparent now.
Indians should be aware that even so called friendly western countries may not be really friendly as competition heats up in globalisation.
Major (2022)
Excellent tight focused drama, true homage to Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
Let's just say this is Advi Sesh's movie !
From the first frame to the last he is Major Sandeep.
The movie is balanced well in action, emotion and drama. The background score keeps you interested and on the edge. Just shy of 2 hours it portrays Major Sandeep's journey from a son, lover, husband to the ultimate warrior while asking himself and the audience what does it actually mean to be a soldier?
The 26/11 drama is well known the tragedy has no boundaries. But it is shown clinically without any melodrama, hooking the audience to what and how the action unfolds.
The rest of the cast again holds itself well. Saii Manjrekar a bit de-glam performs well and looks dignified and has an excellent chemistry with Sesh.
India was lucky to have a son like Major Sandeep ; and an artist like Sesh to portray him with such dignity is a homage well delivered !
Anek (2022)
Confused slow
I had high hopes from this one. So disappointed with the story but the actors keep it real!
But once again another movie of separatists where mainland India and Indians are all to blame and "other minorities " are just innocent people who are forced to take up the gun. Such that a teenager is justified in picking up a gun just because his friends under a separatist leader are gunned down. I mean no questioning of NE political leadership, how they brainwash their people to hate India while amassing fame and fortune for themselves...
even the army is not spared with a real poor comment of surgical strike and a movie to be made on that later ! That was really in poor taste and smacks of vendetta against the current government!!
I am all for political thrillers but a much more balance was needed! I ranked it for the feeble attempts it makes to provide some narrative on national unity but it's direction is to justify anti-India sentiments like we have seen for movies on Kashmir etc.

Technically good entertainment for Indian cricket lovers
Look first it's a docudrama, which means everyone has to look and act like a real life Indian cricketer. This is a technically well made movie. You see some actual real cricket action not just patched up shots of someone bowling and someone batting. They have tried to recreate the same play sequences as much as possible. So the ball seams or spins or swings as was seen on the live telecast.
The West Indian actors as cricketers were good and they plugged in quite well to the narrative. Well they got Malcolm Marshall's son to play as him no wonder it looked very realistic.
Yes there are the usual cliches and some history lessons and a tiny bit of melodrama you would expect in any Bollywood movie but it keeps you entertained.
If you hate cricket don't bother as that's what 90% of the movie is about. There aren't any silly song sequences and traditional melodramas.
Jiiva as Srikanth and Ranveer as Kapil Dev are simply great.
All in all an entertaining fare and this should serve as an impetus for other sports movies as well.
Heosamgwan maehyeolgi (2015)
Emotional roller coaster
I don't know how true this movie is to the book but I really enjoyed it. Some of the story seems overly dramatic and a bit cheesy but if you imagine this movie is about the 50s then I guess people were more simple and emotionally naive I guess and it all works out. Decent acting by all but as with most Korean child actors the lead's son was really good! Ha Ji won looks gorgeous as always but the son father relationship is the main focus here.
Shershaah (2021)
Flat and uninspired
This seems to be KJos attempt at Lakshya 2. Typical Bollywood fare trying to fix romance, friendship, action and nationalism all in one movie. Very flat , not provocative and tries to just narrate a story without delving into the main character. The wait for an Indian saving private Ryan continues.
Naui ajusshi (2018)
Best mature Kdrama out there!
Technically this is a well shot drama with a reasonably tight screenplay, intelligent dialogues and an exceptionally good soundtrack to boot ! The relationship between 20-something Lee Ji-An and 40-something Park Dong-hoon is it love, friendship or infatuation we may never know but it's an absolute rollercoaster. While JiAn endures heart breaking poverty and physical pain that's out there Dong-hoon endures the breakdown of his marital harmony stoically mentally but they are both incredibly pitiful for each other and it is this pity that bounds them together...
IU nails it as the steely but hopeless world-weary girl that just struggles to get through day by day while caring for her grandma. I just can not stop thinking of her haunting performance specifically in the first few episodes. As a grown man her realistic performance has left me teary eyed on quite a few occasions. I hope she explores more such roles!
Sunkyun as Dong-hoon is great and is well supported by the rest of the cast specially his office mates and brothers and family.
Check out the amazing soundtrack Rainbow, Grown ups, Myself in my heart and others!
Overall this is a great package and I will definitely watch a few episodes and scenes multiple times as they are just too good.
Hi Bye, Mama! (2020)
Heart warming and well executed
This is only my 2nd Korean Drama so I was curious how it would be executed. First up technically the visuals and acting is top notch. I could really relate to the characters and some of the emotional scenes and dialogues will stay with me for a while.
This isn't just about a mother who has come back from the dead but the entire gamut of relationships that she is part of that have been revived and their impact is seen in the drama. There are other part stories as well which make you think about how you would approach life if you had a second chance!
Kim Tae-hee is obviously the main star here but the entire ensemble cast acted really well and you will remember them well.
My only criticism is that the story really slowed down after the half way mark and felt rushed up in the final episode and there were may be a bit too many flashbacks in some episodes

Lokmanya Ek Yugpurush (2015)
Excellent biopic
First of all the movie is technically brilliant. The cinematography, visuals and sets looked authentic. The story chugs along at a good pace and does not get melodramatic or jingoistic at any stage - that is a complement to the screenplay! It is rare for an Indian movie to stick to the story and not get diverted into silly romances or grand portrayals. The banter and discourse between Tilak and Agarkar was nicely portrayed. The supporting cast is excellent.
However Subodh Bhave absolutely steals the show as Tilak - I never thought he could be as expressive! His face portrays all the emotions very well, the anger, the disappointment, the stoicness of Tilak.
I was never bored during the movie and was kind of disappointed that it ended... May be a proper series on Tilak and his ideas would be good in the future!
