One Week to Sell (2021)
Pretty awful.
I've tried to find an episode that featured some actual appealing design, but no luck. Combining an electric royal blue wall with a teal couch made my eyes bleed. Possibly the worst feature was a sunburst painted in garish yellow on a ceiling, and one of the rays didn't even end at the middle. Or maybe it was the fake kitchen island that was just a hollow box with no storage. (And why does her crew seem to be afraid of her?) This is a terrific premise for a series, but just awful execution.
Lou Grant: Scandal (1978)
Great episode.
The writers dove into the sticky issue of the finely-drawn but clear line of ethical violations in newspaper reporting. The storyline would have worked if the new reporter had been male, but it had the added complication of a female journalist already battling the sexism of the 1970s working woman. Very well done.
Murdoch Mysteries: The Witches of East York (2022)
Another stellar episode
Really well done, the pacing and direction were great. A few nitpicky little errors in the portrayal of Wicca, but otherwise great. It's always welcome to see Shanice Banton (Violet Hart) have larger roles in these episodes even when she isn't being evil or self-serving. The story was creepy but with a believable conclusion.
Harriet Craig (1950)
Beautifully done by Crawford
Joan Crawford shows some self-awareness with this role, unless she truly sympathized with the lead role (which I could believe, having read Mommy Dearest). Watching this movie is delicious vindication, if only vicarious, of watching a calculating, manipulative person get her comeuppance.
Murdoch Mysteries: Hades Hath No Fury (2017)
Historically accuate
Filmed at the Massey Estate. If viewers think it's all about "all men are bad", the episode is only being true to history. At that time, women in Canada had no legal status; everything they owned became their husband's property when they married; they could not vote; had no legal recourse from being bettered by their husband; and if he so chose, he could (and often did) shut her up in an asylum for life if he didn't approve of her actions (such as marching for women's right to vote or for access to contraception). As other episodes have focused on our past, this one is no less valuable in its historical accuracy. You can't have an episode where half the characters are female without references to this, even tangentially.
The Roommate (2011)
Yes, it's trite, but fun.
Maybe I'm OK with it because I didn't spend money at the theater to see it, but caught it on a late-night TV airing. Yes, it's a rip-off of Single White Female. But the direction and production values are pretty good. For watching at home on TV with a bowl of popcorn, it's worth your time. Predictable, but well done.
Fixer Upper: All-American Farmhouse (2018)
Missed a detail or two
They're in Waco, Texas where it can get pretty chilly in the winter. Yet their only dining room is an "outdoor dining space because your dining table wouldn't fit indoors" in a screened verandah with no glass windows or insulation. Also, there's an enormous two-showerhead shower with benches, but no bathtub. When they have kids, where will they bathe them? Other than that, a nice reveal.
