Riverdale (2017)
Decent show, if your a fan of the CW
First, I have to say my rating largely reflects my personal disappointment in the show. Which I stopped watching after 2 episodes, with no plan to return to it.
The show draws from the iconic Archie comics, with some characters being faithfully recreated, while others are modernized making the cast more racially (and sexually) diversified. At the same time however, a few characters (with Miss Grundy the forefront), are completely unrecognizable from their source material.
The darker tone of the show is an interesting departure from its comedic roots. I am still on the fence about this shift, however having read comics like "Archie vs Predator" I know a dark tone can work, but this show is completely devoid of any humor. The plot of the show focuses on a murder mystery, drawing clear inspiration from Twin Peaks. The lack of comedy and quirky characters clear separates this show from its inspiration, instead drawing on drama and love triangles to keep the viewer interested. This show clearly fits many of the tropes that other CW shows have inspired. This show is clearly designed with that CW audience in mind hoping to draw in audiences from shows like the Vampire Diaries and Pretty little liars (As many others have pointed out).
With this said, as a 26 year old male I am clearly not the target demographic for this show. The problem is that I grew up reading Archie comics and was very hopeful that the show would remind me of the joy. While the show may be great for people who enjoy over-dramatized, love triangle shows, the show is not for fans of the Archie comics, and as such the show is a disappointment.
