Edge of the Earth: The Great Unknown (2022)
Season 1, Episode 4
5/10
Did this need to be an hour?

The runtime on these episodes seem to be a problem. It was interesting to learn about the major waves surfers chase and the establishment of new ones to inspire future generations of surfers to pilgrimage. Other than that, nice footage and a high risk but high safety attitude throughout.

Oh yeah, drama.

Much better episode than the first. The constant uncertainty and antagonism that the crew endured in trying to conquer this river was amazing to watch. I would have wanted to see more about the political environment involving the river, but I understand that's not the focus of this show. However, the fact that these people go down there raises awareness of the existence of this river and how it represents what Yosemite would represent to the climbing world. I would love to see a follow up episode with either the same or different crew.

Warning: Spoilers
First 15 min. Of boring exposition and character introductions, but keeping the viewer interested with amazing imagery. Next, the viewer is told in many ways that what they're about to do is dangerous. Next, they met a tribal member that imparted some history. Cut to: "Alright guys (family) I love you, gotta go." Tribal member continues to weave words of encouragement, the viewer wonders if they really care to be there or if it's some formality that must be done these days. Anyway, more world salad from the crew as if over explaining could impart what it feels like to do what they're about to do. Pause at around 12 minutes and place bets with your viewing friends as to how long it takes him to say the following sentence: "We know we got a significant storm coming in and the question is, is there an end to it? And if there's not an end to it, things get more complicated" Reader of this review cannot participate in this first round, but there are plenty opportunities later on. They manage to stretch this for another 15 min. Or so before you realize that they're not even at the base of the mountain. If you can endure about 20 more minutes of ridge climbing then you're rewarded with a burst of dopamine as you watch them descend down this beautiful mountain. I had to rewatch one part because of how the following sentence was delivered: "You know, you could stay our here forever"....as she looks at the camera or cameraman, we'll never know since she's wearing sunglasses.

Cowboy Bebop (2021)

Almost Great.

Warning: Spoilers
The first episode had a many things going for it, especially the pacing and the story. I haven't seen the anime since I was a kid but I found myself recalling key shots from this first episode in my memories of the show. Even if this is your first introduction to the CB world, you can appreciate the amount of detail put into the visuals, character development and pacing.

Some things that went over my head as a kid: SPOLIERS Spike's journey to recovery mimics real life. In other words, even though this is set in a "future", we're still living in a world where we must busy ourselves in creative ways to afford some grub.

Jet's journey is most likely a commentary on how our "need" to work is providing us a purpose while simultaneously alienating us from the ones we care for the most, so we buy them gifts as a poor substitution. Remember how the episode begins with a critique of the system by a madman?

Ms. Valentine's introduction was a bit annoying but necessary to justify her being in future episodes. I'm personally cringed at the amount of unnecessary cursing, but whatever, we can't always get what we want; the theme of this whole show.
