Priscilla (2023)
Beautiful
My heart hurts. My soul aches. I feel a smoky sense of haunted nostalgia mingled with dull pain.
I'm a married mother of 3, 36 years old and very happy. But this film made me feel 16 - trying to catch the attention of my crush. It made me feel 19 - trying to break through the walls of communication within my first real relationship. It reminded me of the soul crushing experience of loving someone so fully who will never love you back.
It broke my heart to realize that Priscilla could have changed her clothes to match the style of any decade and the story would have remained the same.
A beautiful and deep telling of a story that we thought we knew, but now we are barely learning. Sophia has done it again and this falls gracefully into my rotation of Marie and Suicides.
Mr. Harrigan's Phone (2022)
A decent film adaptation
As an avid Constant Reader (aka Stephen King fan) I was very pleased with this movie. I loved the story and felt that the movie was able to demonstrate the same fragile relationships between the characters and humanity's relationship with technology. King brought me back to 2007 with the first iPhone at the center of this story - and it really is a feeling of nostalgia and surprise at realizing how much has so rapidly advanced since that time In how we share and access information.
I don't anticipate those who haven't read the story to enjoy or appreciate it as much as those of us who have, but hopefully the lesson can still be gleaned.
Sins of the Amish (2022)
Awareness is essential to change.
I had read a few articles and memoirs composed by survivors of the Amish cult before watching this series so I wasn't "shocked" by the depravity but I was still disgusted by what these women and children were subjected to. The Amish and other similar communities need to face intervention from the real world to put a stop to the abuse and hold those committing these crimes accountable. Something is seriously wrong with these people - raping your own children and then justifying it with a fake religion is insane.
Better Things (2016)
Love.
I'm obsessed with this show. An accurate and modern representation of single motherhood, parenting girls, growing up a girl, being divorced ... etc.
And truly hilarious.
