100 Degrees Below Zero (2013)
Pretty bad
The description of this movie reminded me of the movie "The Day After Tomorrow," so I watched it on Netflix. I'm sorry that I did. This could possibly be one of the worst movies I've ever watched.
The acting was utterly terrible. I liked the theme of the movie but the plot was extremely disappointing. The only good thing was that it was suspenseful - whether or not the parents and kids will make it to the Eiffel Tower.
It would've been slightly more okay with a better group of actors, a director who knows what camera angles are good, and a better script. It had potential but fell flat on its face.
Equilibrium (2002)
Great
I liked this movie a lot. I liked the plot, the idea that there was a drug to eliminate human emotion and that feeling was a crime. Christian Bale was excellently cast as the stoic Preston. He was emotionless on the outside but his emotions were revealed in his facial expressions, and he was brilliant acting them out.
The worse part was the gun battles. Gun kata or not, it's not even believable that one man could defeat 10 men surrounding him in a circle. Impossible. I watched this movie twice and fast forwarded the gun battles the second time.
Brandt was supposedly emotionless but he did laugh and later give a macho speech about how he captured Preston. Taye Diggs' character was annoying in general. I wished there were more Sean Bean screen time.
The ending was a bit rushed. I would've liked another 30 minutes to see Preston and Jurgen meet up again to talk about the aftermath of the revolution or at least some dialogue acknowledging it.
Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)
Exciting and suspenseful
This was meant to be a big blockbuster, entertaining, action movie, and it did just that. The whole movie was exciting, suspenseful, and thrilling - all the makings of a fun afternoon/evening at the theater.
The jokes were funny, especially between Kirk and Spock and occasionally Bones. Kirk and Spock's friendship was touching, from Spock throwing Kirk under the bus to the end when Kirk was behind the radiation door. The part that was pointless was the beginning when Bones and Kirk were running through the forest and then jumping off a cliff into the water (they should've died from that jump, but hey, it's a movie).
The entire cast played their characters very well. I thought Karl Urban was a terrible Dr. McCoy (because Bones was so skinny) until I heard him speak, and then I thought Karl was brilliant in mannerism, facial expression, and southern accent. Chris Pine was okay. He was good when he was being funny, but he's terrible when he's angry. That speech he gave Kahn about Kahn being alive only because he's allowing it was terrible acting; he sounded whiny, not authoritative nor angry. Zachary Quinto was a fantastic Spock. So impressed by this guy's portrayal of him. Wonderful acting. Simon Pegg as Scotty was funny. Benedict Cumberbatch didn't impress me too much. To me, he was just another actor in the movie. He didn't stand out to me at all. I rolled my eyes when he said he was Kahn. When the rest of the cast was painstakingly casted to resemble the original Star Trek cast, I have no idea why Kahn was turned into a monochromatic, Caucasian guy.
Other than the acting, the entire movie was exciting and suspenseful. I loved it so much that I bought the DVD, and I never buy DVDs.
Continuum (2012)
Great plot
Love this show. I'm watching it on Netflix. Not that this matters too much, but I had no idea it was Canadian until I read about it on Wikipedia.
I like the plot, that Keira is from 2077 but is now stuck in 2012. How cool that she has all this technology embedded in her body and brain and uniform, that she is human but is one or two steps ahead than everyone else when necessary. Love that she has all this advanced tech on her that gives her the ability to tap into software systems like an ATM machine, the ability to disappear, etc. I like that Alec is the kid who is her intel into her new world. I like how he fits into the storyline in each episode.
The actress who plays Keira isn't a fantastic actor. She's okay, but not impressive. The guy who plays the detective is a much better actor.
As a postscript, love that there are all sorts of ethnicities in the entire cast. Very impressed. Great cast. Too bad American shows don't have the same thing.
