Smartypants (2024)
Absolutely fantastic comedy! Such a simple idea masterfully executed!
At the moment the show is rated an average of 7.6 from a total of 46 ratings, which is just waay to low...in my humble opinion.
Now i'm weary of anyone rating anything a "10" but i just couldn't help myself here, i just found it THAT good. I'm not a lol kind of guy in general, so i wasn't laughing out loud watching this, not even once, but still i want to rate it a 10. I don't know if that says something abouth the show or not but i hope it at least peaks you interest enough to give it a shot. So what is this show then? Well it's like a TED talk (3 or 4 of them in each episode) about various subjects and funny. Like one of the "TED talks" for example is "What cryptid would best to get high with" (SPOILER winner is: Bigfoot, with sound reasoning) or a crash course in "How to write a W. L. E. Or White Lady Email which was surprisingly very informative and will be useful irl. Another one is about how Drag and Wrestling (the Hulk Hogan one) are basically the same thing, or the first talk in the first episode where he breaks down which birthday date is the best, and they got powerpoint presentations, a Q&A in the end and everything. It's really really good and i wish i had the power to make this show to go on and on and on...in eternity. Please watch and vote, and talk about it on Social media and whatever to hype it up so that it gets a second season with more episodes. Please!
Celebrity Prank Wars (2023)
Yeesh...my god this is bad! This has to be meant for children.
I guess this is the result from not having honest people around to say "Naah man, this ain't funny"
Man this sucks...
There is one single rule to pranking, ONE! That's it.
The person you're about to prank isn't supposed to know about it, isn't supposed to expect it, that's it, that's the one rule, and they go and break it rule right from the start. Some of the pranks are so obvious, my god...
The first one is on top of it all lame, at one point there's a handler parading a lama in the room like they do in a petting zoo and there's no reason whatsoever for anyone to be alarmed, but Kevin starts overacting to the point that it gets embarrassing to watch to be honest. The second prank is beyond stupid... bla bla bla Nicks driver runs from the cops. Nwm why cos THAT is even more stupid than anything. Today EVERYONE knows what happens if you run from the cops. They call for backup, and when you finally pull over/they make you pull over, they approach you with guns drawn, shouting their lungs out, pissed of and as way to assert dominance, etc. Whatever. None of that happens here but Nick, a black man, in today's climate, isn't supposed to immediately understand that this is a prank?? In the second or third episode (don't remember which) the person being pranked actually figures out on camera she's being pranked. That's how bad this is, and it doesn't get better. I think this is meant for ages between 5-12 at the most.
Amsterdam (2022)
Endure the first 15 minutes, and remember it's a "true story"- kind of story.
If i had watched this movie alone i wouldn't have made it to the end, in fact i would have stopped 15-20 minutes in.
It's such a weird beginning, weird pace and...i dunno how to describe it, but i rarely NOT watch the entire film once i start. But here i wanted to give up after 15-20 minutes. My friend said "wait" so i waited...and i'm glad i did :)
I liked this film immensely, i really did, and other that those first 15 minutes or so there isn't anything bad about it. Well there is one other thing i didn't quite understand, and that is Chris Rocks role in it. My opinion is give him either a much bigger role, or a much smaller one so that you don't really notice him, or cut him out completely. Right now his role is very anticlimactic. Imagine walking down the street to meet somebody but you're 20 minutes early so you're kind of hoping that something pops up to keep you distracted while you wait. A phonecall, news alert, maybe you'll run in to someone you know...whatever. When suddenly someone very attractive grabs you gently by the arm, looks at you with an excited expression and says "Hi. Could i please ask you to...(then stops mid-sentence, and goes) ...i'm sorry nevermind" and walks away. Clearly i'm not a writer but i hope that i helps to paint a picture of that there's kind of a build up that never really leads to anything every time he's on screen
Anyway... that's the one "bad" thing about the movie, and it's not even bad rally, to tell you the truth. It just could have been better by giving him either more space or make him "invisible" so to speak.
I hardly ever take the time to write a review, but in this case i felt i kind of had to after seeing the low score of 6.1. I mean what!?? That's not fair at all. REMEMBER that they are trying to stick close to a true story, and a true story rarely play like a Hollywood blockbuster. If you haven't seen it give it a go. Just don't expect it to be a "mobster-movie" with gunfights and car chases, cos it's far from it.
Black Widow (2021)
Pugh for the win!
I love Scarlet.
I think she's a tremendously talented actress and I've been a major fan since Lost in translation, where she completely stole the scene.
I liked this movie and in my opinion it's one of the better MCU movies. (much much better than both Black Panther and Wonder Woman '84 ) Yes it could have been darker and more serious, ala "Anna" (2019), "Atomic Blonde" (2017) or obviously the awesome "Red Sparrow" (2018). Of course there were things here and there that annoyed me a little, but never something that bothered me throughout the movie. More like for a moment here and there...after all this is a Marvel superhero movie, so it wouldn't be fair to expect it to be things like scary, realistic or educational, for example ;)
I really loved the fighting sequences! Yes they were exaggerated a.f. But again...this is a superhero movie.
It's 100% pure entertainment!
However, what impressed me the most was Florence Pugh! While David Harbour and Scarlett Johansson were great in their roles, the only reason why the're not sharing the spotlight here is BECAUSE they are great actors (an extra "great" for David who's in my opinion a somewhat underestimated actor) and so, anything BUT great would have been a disappointment coming from those two. Sorry David and Scarlett, but with greatness comes responsibilities :)
No, the star that shone the brightest in this film was an unexpected one! It was the star of Florence Pugh and it shone throughout the whole film, and the fact that her voice "matched the accent" (i know this sounds weird) was just icing on the cake for me.
I think i'm smitten :)
The World According to Jeff Goldblum (2019)
Good, but... :(
I enjoyed watching this show, it's easy to watch, a little educational, but also somewhat annoying. Now i say somewhat annoying cos the 2 topics that are/were of a particular interest to me didn't event mention a couple of HUGE areas within their field.
For example in the Coffee episode he didn't even once mentioned flavored coffee. I've been roasting coffee myself for years and flavored coffee has a special place in my heart. I really love to mix freshly roasted beans with different flavored beans to find that one special blend that has just the right taste... but not once have i managed to find out exactly what the coffee companies use to flavor their coffee so i can try to make my own. I know that the flavor is sprayed on the beans while they are in the oven being roasted, but what is it and how is it made? Not being able to find out anything about it makes me very curious why, and i would have loved if he had said something about it. After all flavored coffee is a pretty big part of the coffee business so it was a bit surprising and quite disappointing that he choose to not even mention the subject at all.
The second thing was even more surprising and disappointing.
He did an episode about denim without once mentioning selvedge! What?! How does that even happen??
That's literrally like talking about the history of cars without mentioning the T-Ford... nuts...
Anyways.
I't still a good show though, and i do recommend it :)
Huge in France (2019)
so old...
Someone called this original and it very well might be, if you somehow managed to ENTIRELY skip the last 4 decades of television.
I couldn't sit through the first episode it was so annoying. The only "newish" thing about it was that the main character was from France and apparently very famous there. Other than that the first episode (or what i saw of it) offered -and i can't stress this enough- ABSOLUTELY NOTHING NEW. On the contrary actually, basically every single thing was old, and tired, and done to death.
Sorry.
I'm Dying Up Here (2017)
So under rated and absolutely top notch
So i chose to copy and paste paulashton001's review for 2 reasons, nr 1) for the first time EVER i found myself agreeing with every single word of someone else's review, and reason nr 2) Since i really do agree with every single letter in this particular review (except where i corrected his misspelled tomatoes) i figured i'd take the easy way out and instead of writing my own i just copied his. All hail paulashton001! (well, at least in this case)
Like the tragically cancelled Roadies I'm Dying Up Here has not received it's due praise. It's funny and touching examination of the lives of upcoming comedians masks the true magic of the show, which is to relate universal struggle all of us face in trying to realize our future potential while nurturing healthy relationships and balancing responsibilities right now. Shooting for the top before fizzling out or exploding. Reconciling our past with our present.
I don't know why these amazing shows have so much trouble finding an audience or critical acclaim. It seems like if character arcs are not clearly defined then critics think it is muddled. This is not the case though.
I love this show as I loved Roadies. The history and trade knowledge serve to enrich the themes adding texture and ambiance. I love it. The critics got it wrong but an 80 percent favourable audience score on Rotten Tomatoes sounds about right.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Oh so slow!
Sorry but no thnx, no more of this for me.
I found this show to be unbearably slow and after 5 episodes i just gave up.
Now, slow doesn't necessarily need to mean bad, sometimes slow can be really good (an example right here would really help to illustrate my point, but i just can't think of one right now) but this show has been labeled with genres as Crime, Drama and Mystery and put that together with the trailers and the high ranking it gave (at least me) the completely wrong idea of what this show would be like. One of the more annoying things was that just as i wanted to give up after 2 or 3 episodes, another body was found and it kind of sucked me back in, thinking that the pace would change, that things would start to happen etc etc.
But no... and other than sometimes completely unrelated flashbacks, other times completely pointless flashbacks, (about 1/4 of the show are flashbacks) or conversations with someone about something, NOTHING happens!
There's basically no progress in the story regarding the crimes, it's just a bunch of "personal" flashbacks, or remembering either the good times or the bad times, but mostly it's flashbacks about, or being rebuked by her b***h mother.
Yeah yeah yeah, the details around the making of this serie are really, really, mucho fantastico, things like cinematography, casting, soundtrack etc.etc. but the serie itself is TO ME complete and utter garbage. Sooo boring!
The genres are so misleading, it's mostly drama (like 91%), with a tiny pinch of mystery (about 5% cos throughout every episode way, way, back of your mind you keep wondering "who done did it?") and it's all revolving around a crime (which is about 4%, cos you never really get to see any of the crimes) where a body just drops, or rather said gets found in the open, but you don't even get to see that part, neither the finding OR the dropping of.
Eeh fogetaboutit...
