The Fallout (2021)
The aftermath of a tragic event
I loved this movie due to the simplicity of it. It just embraces the consequences of a tragedy that occurred to some students, and how hard it was for them to overcome this. It doesn't try to be impactful with over the top situations, it just highlights the aspects that the characters faced during this bad time, being minimalistic and simplistic. Scenes like small hugs, conversations with a therapist and dialogue-driven situations make up for some slow pacing takes.
The acting is really good, particularly by the leading actress Jenna Ortega, whose character is developed more and truly shows how difficult it is to handle the post-events repercussions.
It's not an outstanding film, but it's truly engaging and its beauty relies in the simplicity of it.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Tomorrow (2020)
Fantastic ending to the first arc
I must say I wasn't really invested in the first episodes of this anime, but immediately after the Mahito's arc started, I couldn't held my breath.
This episode bursts out in action, with superb animation and compelling characters (they have weaknesses and clear objectives).
I can't wait to see what else this anime has to offer.
The Queen's Gambit: End Game (2020)
A fantastic checkmate
What a wonderful closure to an incredible miniseries like this. How all the pieces from the beginning connected and the emotions flourished throughout the hour made me feel truly alive.
The development of the characters, the score and Russian scenery were truly mesmerizing. How subtle some topics or issues were treated is something that I appreciate.
Beth Harmon's character made us feel in love with her, and throughout the entire episode (and season) we genuinely want her to achieve her goal.
Kudos to Anya Taylor Joy's phenomenal performance and a big applause to the director for producing such an amazing product.
Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu: The Taste of Death (2020)
Outstanding. Best episode of the anime so far.
This episode is what I've been waiting for in Re-Zero.
It's a rollercoaster of emotions scene after scene. It contains all the ingredients to make it the top choice for best episode of this anime: character development (particularly Beatrice and Rosewall), action, sadness, mystery, fantastic soundtrack and a spectacular ending. I cannot wait to see what this anime has left to offer.
Game of Thrones: The Last of the Starks (2019)
What happened to the old Game of Thrones?
What a boring episode, filled with cliché quotes and endless stares. The characters act like there is no war; stupid romances that are there to fulfil the "fans" expectations, dull scenery and wooden acting from the main protagonists (that Jon Snow speech at the beginning was cringe-worthy)
I feel like I've seen most of the scenes in previous episodes, like the writers are stucked... nothing happens (and there is no action required; a good episode can have no action sequences and still be good). I miss the episodes with witty dialogues, with defined strong characters (Tyrionn becaming a drunken idiot is something I can't stand) and with purposes. I feel confused because that's what GoT became: a total mess.
I Kill Giants (2017)
Such an underwhelming experience
I'd seen the trailer and the movie looked pretty awesome. A little reckless girl fighting some badass giants, with a huge hammer and some explosions. The movie had also the contribution of Chris Columbus, the great director of two of my favourite childhood films (Harry Potter).
Sadly, the trailer was pure marketing, because all the action sequences (which are almost none) were included there. I didn't mind watching a teenage drama because I actually enjoy them, but this wasn't the case. The movie felt dull, the pace was really slow and the scenery was pretty repetitive. The acting was fine, but the characters were a bit of a disappointment. The main girl took childish decisions, putting herself and the people around her in danger, and her attitude throughout the film was painful to watch. By the end, the movie takes a different direction, but the fact that we don't care about the main protagonist, doesn't allow us to shed a tear.
There are some good moments though, especially in the script, which is sometimes mature and intelligent.
When the movie finished I couldn't avoid comparing it to "A Monster Calls" by Bayona, a wonderful film that is mainly copied by this one, especially the ending and the fantasy fact.
