2 ou 3 choses que je sais d'elle (1967)
Poetic whisper contemplating on film making
Godard is playing with the very building blocks of movie making - and showing it to us! He takes us to his machine-room and reveals the power of a director. But also the struggle on how to use the power. How does one show something, what do you show and why? The choice and decision making is a core component that Godard comes back to time and time again.
Through a whispered poetic pearl string of questions, notes, decisions and answers read by the director himself - this movie feels more like an essay on movie making, than anything else.
A contemporary weak narrative serves as the backbone of the movie, with themes such as human relationship, family and ordinary parisian life, sprinkled with references to the ongoing Vietnam war. The incomplete narrative adds to the essay-feeling, as we see Godard freely experiment with the characters, visual shot and sound work without interrupting a solid narrative.
At times the characters seem very alive and free willed, conscious about the audience and interacting directly with them. This happens as the director cuts them loose from the ties that we are used to binding characters of fiction. The border between fiction and reality gets blurred a bit, which contributes to a fresh breath of air.
The visuals are very fascinating with many of the vast cityscape undergoing rapid expansion. It is very Antonioni-esque and delivers a lot of very fine shots with depth, movement and stunning mise-en-scene throughout.
To me this movie was a great surprise and a very pleasant experience to watch and contemplate on.
I will recommend this. 8/10.
