Hawaii Five-O: The Late John Louisiana (1970)
Murder in Maui
McGarret and crew must hop islands and visit Maui to investigate the murder of a thug connected to Harry Quon, one of McGarret's nemesis'. Quon's top hit man, Nick Pierson, was sent 2 years ago to "rub out" a female witness that could put Quon away for life. Pierson falls in love with the girl instead and serves up a look-alike for the girl but now Quon is onto Pierson and wants him to get it done right. Meanwhile, McGarret is closing in on the truth and wants the girl to testify. Fun episode, no idea if they really filmed any on Maui (probably not) but the scenery is stunning, as usual. Interesting and strange side-note is seeing Al Harrington play Charlie, another of Quon's thugs. Harrington ends up on the Five-O squad as Ben a couple years later replacing Kono.
Hawaii Five-O: The Reunion (1970)
Pretty Good
Nice suspense episode regarding a group of World War II guys getting together in Hawaii for their 25th anniversary. This group was involved in the Pacific side of the war and a trio of guys in particular have some deep-seated hatred for their Japanese captors. They see a businessman that looks just like the man that was charged with breaking them through torture. Is he or is he not the guy becomes the mystery throughout the episode? The bitterest of them all becomes the advocate for taking care of this guy and lends plenty of emotion to the feature. The twists and turns in this episode highlight the action and McGarret is on top of his game, as usual.
Hawaii Five-O: The Guarnerius Caper (1970)
Nice Scenery
This is one of those episodes that takes you on a great scenic tour of the island, highlighting the ocean and the beautiful features of Hawaii (Oahu). A Russian violinist loses his priceless instrument to a couple of two-bit thugs who weren't intending to steal it in the first place. Once they realize it's value, their caper takes on a whole new dimension. They end up committing murder and raising the stakes immensely. Along with the main plot line is some international intrigue as the Russian involvement causes the Governor to make things a bit sticky for McGarret The thugs are pretty goofy and some of their screen time comes off as pretty corny but the chase and the cool demeanor of McGarret (and his actions at the end) make this episode a winner in my book.
Hawaii Five-O: To Hell with Babe Ruth (1969)
Not Good
This is really an awful episode outside of a few spectacular shots of the island. McGarret doesn't get to show his full range and the character of Nagata is not played well. Rather than mentally deranged, he comes off as simply weird and unbelievable. The premise of his problems and delusions is really shallow.
The plot skips around with no semblance of order and the Five-O team is really out of sync trying to figure out what's going on.
Then in the final scene as the good guys race around the Pearl Harbor storage facility trying to "be silent" is really goofy. The "chase scene" at the end is bad as well.
Oh well, they can't hit it out of the park every time.
Hawaii Five-O: And a Time to Die... (1970)
Pretty Good
Nice season opener including Wo Fat in another attempt to bring havoc to McGarret's island.
Central intelligent agent's must fight to keep an informant alive while Wo Fat wants him dead. The choice that a brain surgeon must make brings another dimension to this episode. Does he stick to the oath he made as a doctor while putting his 9-year old daughter in great peril? If you are a parent, it's something that makes you think about such choices.
While this episode reveals a touch of humanity in Wo Fat, it fails to deter your contempt for a man that would put a child in harms way in this manner.
Well written!
Hawaii Five-O: Trouble in Mind (1970)
Drugs in the Spotlight
Nancy Wilson gets a spot in this episode which I judged to be just okay.
McGarret has trouble on his hands as he needs to stop a deadly strain of heroin on the island. Wilson's character, along with her piano player played by Harry Guardino, dominate the scenes as they attempt to evade McGarret and his crew while trying to find a "fix".
Pretty shallow plot involving very little action, however, we get to see the typical tough Steve McGarret trying to set things straight and bring some semblance of order to the scene. He does so in great fashion (as usual) and even gains some unusual camaraderie with Guardino's character while trying to serve a greater good.
Glory Road (2006)
Not Great
I heard a lot about this movie before seeing it so perhaps my expectations were a bit high, however, I wasn't all that thrilled by it. First of all, the "racist" angle was a bit overplayed every time the situations arose. I realize the main theme of the story was about overcoming racism but to pound it into us and exaggerate every such instance made it obvious there was a small hint of an agenda here by the producers. Game action was poor, especially the title game. Most annoying was the announcer: "passes to Smith, over to Jones, etc. etc." ad nauseam. Were they that bad back in the 60's??? Jon Voight as Adolph Rupp did a very poor job or the direction in his scenes (esp. the team huddles) was just bad. The whole title game had a cheesy feel to it. Very disappointed.
