Krazy Cat nostalgia
27 November 2007
I can't believe when people comment about cartoon shows from the early 60's and complain about the picture quality. A lot of these shows such as Krazy Cat are far from classics, but for those of us that grew up watching them it is a blessing to even have access to them again on DVD. These so called critics that are looking for multi layered plots to unfold are looking in the wrong genre. These are cartoons. They are for children and for nostalgic adults like myself. My 4-year-old son seems to enjoy Ignatz as much as I did and he isn't complaining that the plots are too thin. My son also enjoys other cartoon collections from my youth including "Davey and Goliath", "The Mighty Heroes", "The Mighty Hercules", "Gigantor", "Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse" and "The Beatles" cartoon series. While most of these shows can't stand the test of time like Bugs Bunny cartoons, if you were there and saw them when you were young it is great to see them again.

Paris Blues (1961)
Young Newman and Poitier playing jazz
19 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Paris Blues (1961) - starring Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier is an excellent film. The film offers a unique retrospect of attitudes in America and Paris of the early 60's especially in regard towards race, romance and the musician's love of their music. Several scenes dealing with these complex issues were extremely well acted, especially Sidney Poitier and Diahnn Carroll's discussions dealing with race. On the lighter side, to me personally, it was a special treat to see the seemingly eternal film superstar Paul Newman, known to today's youth as "the salad dressing" and "microwave popcorn dude", in his youth. The youthful Newman's powerful portrayal of the "hipster jazz musician" was very entertaining. It was humorous, yet compellingly believable. Particularly priceless was hearing Newman using the now timeless slang that has since permeated our culture and is still in as common usage today as it was in the early 60's period of its origin. Overall, this movie was pure entertainment. The jazz soundtrack, featuring a special appearance by jazz legend Louie Armstrong, was enjoyable even to the non-jazz listeners such as myself. The ending was wonderful, leaving the viewer to arrive at their own conclusions as to whether Newman and Poitier would follow love back to America or remain in the Paris music scene.

Something's missing

One of the most fun parts of Adam Sandler movies is watching for what weird character Allen Covert will show up as. He has been in 13 films with Adam Sandler and looks different every time. I kept waiting him to show up, but he never did. I missed seeing Peter Dante(7 movies) and Jonathan Loughran(8 movies)too. These guys are regular staples of Adam's movies and were great in "Little Nicky" as "fans of his father's work". And even though another "regular", Blake Clark(6 movies), was "in the movie", his scenes were deleted. These guys have all done so many movies with Adam and it is always fun to see them again. (For more of Allen Covert and Peter Dante, I highly recommend "Grandma's Boy") It was good to see other Sandler film alumni such as Henry Winkler, Rob Schneider(uncredited), Tim Herlihy, Frank Coraci and Sean(50 First Dates)Astin in the movie. It must be fun working on Adam's movies when there are so many old friends around.

Great starring role for Covert and Dante
23 September 2006
I am a big fan of Adam Sandler's movies and always have a good time looking for the kooky character Allen Covert plays. If you look hard, you will find him in almost every one. Peter Dante and John Loughran are two other frequent players in Sandler's movies that you have to watch for. Sometimes they have bigger parts, most notably in Little Nicky. It was great to see a movie that showcased the talents of Covert and Dante. If Dante doesn't smoke pot for real he deserves an Oscar, because he has nailed the stoner character to a tee. He must've been so stoned that they named the character Dante so he would know when they were talking to him. The DVD extras are great and especially the chimp with Dante. I just hope we get to see more movies featuring these guys. And the IMDb "weighted" ratings are a farce. This movie has an average of "8" but gets knocked down to "6.5" or something. I give it a "10" and really don't care what the "ratings" are.

My new favorite movie

This was the best movie I have seen in a long time. It was so realistic that it almost took on the feeling of a documentary. It gave me another perspective of the Israel-Palestinian conflict. As Americans, we usually only get the Israeli perspective. This movie showed the Palestinians as rational human beings that have legitimate cause for their actions. They thoughtfully discussed the reasons for suicide bombings and even explored the consequences. The monologue by Said towards the end summed up the Palestinian position quite well. Hopefully this film will bring a heightened awareness to the casual observer of the MidEast conflict and bring both sides closer to peace.
