The Farewell (2019)
I wish this was good, It really had everything it needed... MEH...
Beutiful-looking film, amazing shots, solid acting, engaging opening and yet - a blank movie who didn' finish what it started saying.
This is based on the real life story that the director Lulu Wang lived thru; I get that, but that doesn't mean that you don't have to dramatize situations in the film. Narrative here doesn't make much sense. Metaphors and allegories worked just fine, could be more flashed out, or less, I wouldn't care if the narrative pulled me into the story. If that was the case I would be happy to break my head about the meaning of it all.
- - Some Minor Spoilers:
It all ends quite blankly, nothing happens, besides allegory that stands with the visuals, story itself never reached the peak; bubble kept on growing, but never poped. We never got that "gasp" moment, our eyes wide open while everything is untangling - and movie really had a solid ground, good setup, for that to happen.
All in all, this is worth watching only if you deeply care about cinematography.
5/10 is feeling a lot and too little, at the same. I guess there is something about this film that keeps you feeling sorry for it being bad, but that something is definitely not the screenplay.
Last Night in Soho (2021)
Edgar, what happened?
Let me say this: I am glad when directors try something new and don't stick with the same thing over and over just because the formula works.
That being said, you cannot deny this is his worst film to this date. There sre some great shots, some interesting ideas, moments that engage you, but overall this feels weak. I am sorry to even be writing this review cause Edgar Wright is one of my favorites, but I'll do what needs to be done.
Characters are shallow here, with little to no depth, story is predictable and I was not able to emotianally connect with it even tho it stands on some pretty solid ground of ideas. Acting is at moments over the top and some characters are caricatures of themselves. Also, the ending feels like a 5pm tv movie which was really the climax of the emotion this film has.
I hope to see more from Edgar in future, experimenting with new ideas, I just hope they will be executed properly.
The Greatest Showman (2017)
I'm late to the party and I didn't miss a thing
I'm not in the mood to break this down beat by beat, so let's just keep it brief.
This is poorly written, predictable in a worst way possible and acted out very questionably. Zendaya is the only good thing here with a scene or two containing actual acting chops.
Biggest problem is that this is musical with music that is soooo out of place, out of time. Also those musical elements and parts, most of the time, feel like they are there to create a music video rather than help to move the story forward. Emotionally predictable and not interesting. Let down. 3/10 is being generous.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Adam McKay Strikes Again!!!
I can't believe that this movie is rated this low... Sharp 9 to a light 10 for me. This movie hits the spot at every single attempt.
Let's start with the single thing I would like to see fixed: there are unique McKay moments in every of his recent films; like showing text explaining things on the screen, or stating the fact on the screen while the characters are wrong, and so on. Those things usually throw people out of the story, but Adam McKay pulls it so smoothly every time... He also did that here, couple of times only tho, all at the begining of the movie. I missed more of those moment. (I hope I made myself clear on the subject matter cause it is hard to describe the moments I am aiming at.)
The rest of the movie... This is beautiful. I think most of the people that do not like this film are either offended by it (finding themselves mocked) or just not smart enough. This is such an intelligent written satire that lands every beat. The way americans, goverment, general mentality and blissful state of mind regarding these larger-than-life topics are potrayed here is astonishing. Metaphorical characters like Streep's president or her son (Hill) are so well done, so well written and well thought out that just thinking of them makes me chuckle.
There are some so plain and in-your-face things in the dialogue here that it may seem like it's a childish play at question, but don't be mistaken; everything is carefuly placed.
If you look for a mockery piece, political and social commentary, satire at it's best, and straight out calling-you-out comedy you will find your cup of tea in "Don't Look Up".
I'd like to finish with this: event tho I found the comedy and the ideas of it the most fun thing here, filmmaking is also very, very good, editing is at times so amazing I could write an essay about it, and acting is on the point regarding the entire cast.
Don't take this film literally and look behind the screen, you will find a masterpiece.
Euphoria: Trouble Don't Last Always (2020)
Wow! Wow! Wow!
I will keep this short; I think this might be one of the best written things I've seen in a last couple of years. This was truly masterful, loved every frame, every directional decidion, every camera move, every dialogue line. Can't wait to continue on with this show.
City of Lies (2018)
This is not 10/10 movie, BUT THESE REVIEWS...
This, by any means, is not a 10/10 movie, but these imdb reviews, and these metacritic reviews, they all got this one thru the dirt. I don't know what's up whit Depp's movies being bashed on so hard. I know this is not a cinematic masterpiece, I know the story could be told in a more compelling and interesting way, but it is just not that bad. Framing and cinematography was pretty good, story moved in a adequate pace and performances were more than decent. I have a few problems, ofcourse, first being: Forest Whitaker's character is so unimportant here, so irrelevant to the story, he is a mere puppet to make Depp speak about the case. Also, let's adress the elephant in the room, the ending was unsatisfactory as it can be... But if you know the story you don't expect anything else, also it is a true story - you can't be mad at it. You can argue that in that case it is a wrong biopic to choose for a film, taking that loose end into account, but I beg to differ. Film showed us some interesting facts, small details, gave us a story as it is in reality; and I love it for it. It is under-two-hours movie that seems like acted out documentary (which, in this case, is a good thing). And that is where I'd like to leave my review. I think it is a good watch that inspires one's own research.
Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
BEAUTIFUL! Obvious why it's shruged under the carpet, tho.
It's obvious why this movie is shruged under the carpet.
Let me start with the important things; Cinematography is the best. Truly one of the best looking films I've seen in a while. Mark Rylance is at his best his here; telling you so much with so little. On my own surprise Johnny Depp is also very good here; I would call this his comeback role but somehow noone knows about this movie. It got low ratings, on IMDb user rating board and metacritics, and besides that such a low number of people rating it. I was really not expecting a good movie but man, o man, this was amazing. Slow paced but for it's own beauty of it. Human nature depicted so well, and through so few scenes of violence it perfectly showed how Americans treated natives. And that is probbably why this movie is pushed aside of a public eye; because Americans are shown as they really were back then: Ruthless, violent and war-hungry.
Anyways, do go watch it. It's amazing.
