Kindred (2020)
Frustrating to watch, lazy, unrealistic ending.
The movie starts off ok, a little slow, but watchable. After the boyfriends death it starts to go downhill. It just is so unrealistic. Charlotte "passes out" and the doctor just lets the in laws to take her home, where she proceeds to be passed out for days, no IV, no medical personnel to check in on her, just passed out for a few days.. no biggie!
Then her phone is broken, and Thomas is going to get it fixed. The next time it is spoken of, Charlotte looks 6 months pregnant. It took her that long to ask about her phone, it took that long just sitting in that old house no contact to the outside world? Yeah, sure.
So, she starts getting suspicious, and goes to the hospital for a scan. The tech at the hospital, of course, contacts the crooked doctor when Charlotte asks for help. And then they make her go home with Thomas? In this day and age? Yeah... sure.
She tries walking out of the house, gate is locked, and I'm sure the entire however many acre estate is all just completely fenced in? No way through? No weak or broken part of the fence in a clearly crumbling and poorly maintained estate? Yeah. Sure.
Then they lock her in the house. Couldn't possibly break through any of the gigantic windows that would be easy as pie to climb through on the ground floor. No, that would make sense. She has to steal the keys, and then fumble long enough at the gate with them that she can't get back in the car she stole, and has to run away. Only to be picked up by a friend, who betrays her (with no explanation why) and takes her right back.
So, she's locked in her room. Fakes bleeding to get Thomas to take her to the hospital, and of course he just takes her back to the crooked doc. Charlotte steals the car again, and wrecks because she actually IS having hallucinations (which was the only thing that slightly surprised me to this point.)
She wakes in the hospital, and sees the baby has been born, but it's not with her, no... and the doctor there tells her she's crazy and can't be alone with her own child. And then the "father" brings in the baby for her to see, and the ending is revealed. Thomas, the step-brother of the baby's father, is going to kidnap the child and raise it with his step-mother.
That's not anything a DNA test could verify, right? One little swab on the cheek, and everything would be sorted out. But, no... they just get to keep the baby, and Charlotte stays locked up in the mental ward. Come on.. give your watchers just a little bit of credit. If they had just made Thomas a blood relative the ending would have actually worked! Why did they even have to make him a step brother? It had literally no actual bearing on the story if he was a blood relative or not, but it made the ending a complete disaster! I feel cheated having watched this.
Before I Wake (2016)
Great idea, good acting, poor execution
I stumbled upon this movie on netflix, and thought I would give it a shot. I didn't know anything about it going in. The idea the creators had for this movie was really pretty good - unique, interesting, has depth that a lot of films these days lack. The acting was adequate, not necessarily the best I have seen from these actors, but it was ok. The worst part was the constant plot holes. It was just so hard to get into a movie when in the back of your mind you are saying, that would never happen like that, a person would never behave like that. And I'm not saying that the fantastical elements of the movie were unbelievable, I liked those parts and I love supernatural thrillers/dramas. But this movie just could have used someone in the writing procedure just look at things with a little more common sense about the way humans act.
I still think it was not a waste of my time watching, and the idea was enjoyable, just if you are going to give it a go, try not thinking logically while you are watching and it may be more enjoyable.
Towers (2012)
It wasn't the worst movie I have ever seen.
While the premise of this movie was interesting, the execution was a bit of a let down. The science was not explained in a very coherent way, and was a bit confusing at times. The characters fell flat, and were very underdeveloped and unconvincing. It was only an hour, but it felt like it was much longer. Some of the sets were very cool, so they earned a star there. If this was like a high school project, I would say they did a great job and pat them on the head.
All in all, like I said not the worst movie I have ever seen.
Into the Forest (2015)
One of the best
Like the title says, this is one of the best post apocalyptic movies I have seen. It was so realistically portrayed. I felt the emotions, and felt like I was living through it with the two sisters. There was such an amazing connection between the lead actresses, and their dynamic relationship through the movie was incredibly authentic and fascinating. I would agree with some of the negative reviews that some of the choices the sisters made during the movie probably weren't the best, but I think that gives the movie some of its reality. The end, well, this is where it goes a bit wrong for me. The logic explained in the movie is a bit off putting, and I do see it as a waste. I don't want to spoil what happens so that is all I will say about it.
All in all, still an 8 out of 10 for me, and I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a good story about the human will through adversity.
Magellan (2017)
Interesting, glad I watched it!
If you like sci-fi or space exploration movies, this is one for you. I loved it. It had an interesting idea, moved at a decent pace, had some pretty suspenseful parts, and as a whole was a very enjoyable watch. If there was one thing I would criticize its that I think it would have benefited from a longer run time. I felt like some of the story was a bit rushed, and I would have loved to see more.
OzLand (2014)
Waste of a wasteland
I love post apocalyptic movies, so I was looking forward to watching this even despite the mixed reviews. I don't know if the director intended for Lief to come across as mentally challenged but that is what it seemed like to me, and if that is not what he was going for, it was a bit distracting. There was an idea in this movie, perhaps not a good one, but a new one. If they had fleshed it out a bit more it might have been something, but as it was, it just came up short. The only reason I gave this movie 2 stars is because I liked a lot of the settings they used. They found some pretty cool abandoned locations to use, and if nothing else in this contrived lump of garbage, at least there was something sort of cool to look at. Oh, and the ending? Really? Just wow, unbelievably dull, and (SPOILERS AHEAD) I kind of wish Emery would have found Lief's body hanging out of a tree or scattered around.
A Haunting on Dice Road: The Hell House (2016)
Great paranormal documentary
I was really impressed with this documentary about the paranormal occurrences at a haunted house. They capture many things on video that are unexplainable and most of the doc is presented in a fairly objective way. I really enjoy watching true to life paranormal stuff, and this was one of the best ones I have seen. I highly recommend watching it if you are into this genre.
Fairlane Road (2016)
If you can get past the bad acting, it's still boring
I gave this movie 2 stars only because some of the cinematography was decent. Other than that, this movie is a bust. The low budget shows through not only in the bad acting, but also the distractingly horrible cgi. I wonder if they were using cut and paste in paint it was that bad. The acting seemed as if they were reading the script for the first time on camera and said, "ok, that's good enough." The story could have been good, it was somewhat original, but as a whole I recommend skipping this one.
Punch-Drunk Love (2002)
One of the most awful movies I have ever seen.
I have just wasted an hour and a half of my life watching this poor excuse for a film. I have never written a review here before, but the immense hatred I have for this movie has compelled me to write one. I was close to turning it off multiple times, but thought, no, I will give it another chance, maybe there is a good payoff in the end. Not only was I wrong, but there was practically no end at all. It was the same inadequate, tedious tripe that the rest of the film was made of. Do not waste your time, because that is all it was to me.
I feel almost as if I have been wronged by the people that made this movie, that is how incredibly bad it is. The only positive thing that I can find about this viewing experience, is that I didn't pay to see it.
